Wilder v Heckingbottom - the Covid season

3 wins and 3 clean sheets in the last 6 games. Do that all season and we finish with over 50 points. Think Hecky’s done an ok job in very difficult circumstances. Not saying he should get the job long term but nothing to be ashamed of.

His post match interview basically said he's going back to U23's next season and he seemed happy with with that. It's going to be big summer sorting this squad out so no time to waste in appointing the new Manager.

Think Wilder just forgot he was Sheffield United manager. Wanted to get on with his own career after challenging for Europe and winning LMA manager of the year and then coming runner up..

That's great if you're at Leicester or something, where qualifying for Europe is a legitimate goal, but he was at Sheffield United, he knew the limitations of our budget, but chose to ignore/moan about them rather than accept them and cannily work around them like he had done to great success in the rest of his tenure.

Allied to some appalling recruitment for whatever reason and and it felt like he wanted to make a point more than he wanted us to survive.

Heckingbottom has done well, bit of a cold fish, which was a bit jarring after Wilder, but intelligent and pragmatic.

Got us moving again, good man to have around the club if he's going back to the Under 23s.

Wilder does seem to have an over inflated opinion of himself. Rumours are he's holding out for a Premier league job, god help any prem team who hires him.

PH form extrapolated over a season is 31 points. Not exactly anything to celebrate

But that said he’s done as much as we could have expected with the squad and injuries he inherited. Blooded some youth and had the side competing until the last game. Genuinely Seems like a good guy and definitely an asset to the club while he wants to work here, but I think we need more if we are hoping for a quick return to the PL.

Funny how little respect lots of blades now have for a manger who worked wonders for us. Yes he made lots of mistakes and recruited piss poorly over his last 18 months but I don’t think that invalidates the previous 4 years.

And I’m 100% sure he’ll have success at his next job. Pretty much any championship club would take him now (have seen people suggesting he should take a league one job - Rotherham or Sunderland FFS!). An I reckon he’ll prove himself at PL level again given time and any PL club that took a chance on him whilst his stock is low wouldn’t regret it, especially if he learns from his transfer mistakes.

Doesn't invalidate them at all, nor does the previous 4 seasons make this season ok, just talking about this season where I do think something changed with him.

Lots of respect for those 4 seasons, even despite his performance this season he still saved this club. I do think he'll struggle to find a Prem team that gives him everything he really wants though (cash, free reign), but he'll be a success wherever he ends up I'm sure.

Is it coincidence that in those 6 matches we have been setup to be more positive and attack minded ?

I dont think it is a question of little respect it is as they say:

When the going gets tough the tough get going. Seems our Chris was a bit nesh.

Even Adolf stuck it out to the end. I mean he didn't jet off to Argentina so he didn't get an 'unconditional surrender' on his cv. And he did try to change the formation around, even too much. Indeed so much so no one knew what the hell they were designing. However he did have about 40 million red cards to his name so that was a bit of a bugger. But he did stay to the end, unlike someone I could think of.

Just saying like :)

Agree with that.

think lots of fans now critical of wilder just don’t like the thought that he ‘jilted us and gave up’. This season was fuxking awful for the fans - it must have been ten times worse for wilder who was overseeing it but seemingly powerless to do owt about it. For me it doesn’t take a stretch to see that all getting too much for him and him having to get out of the situation. He genuinely looked ill by the end of his reign here.

like you say... look where we were, and look where we are now even after a disaster of a season. 3 years of parashoot payments and lots of saleable assets to secure the future of the club long term if we need it.

i would say he outclassed the messiah, he did very well, because in early stage of the season we chucked alot of points away could be upwards of 14pts. we never really did this under heckingbottom

& also i dont remember our defence being as poor under wilder as it was under heckingbottom

It doesn't invalidate the previous three and three quarter seasons, I think most of those of us who criticise Wilder would accept that, and I do feel bad having a go in a way, but I'm afraid my p.o.v. restated time and time again in the autumn was that the man's ego had grown to such proportions that it cast a shadow not only over Bramall Lane but possibly as far as Gleadless.

He displayed an arrogance despite the appalling results and performances to anyone who questioned his methods and this did for me. You can see he can be a right mardy bastard and it's probably that which means that at, say, Oxford where he was also manager for quite some time, he seems to be remembered much less fondly than his successor Appleton.

So we had a great few years and are now in a far, far better position than we could have imagined less than five (or even three) years ago, and those achievements will never change - nor the style of achieving it - but I'm sorry to say he helped to sour his own legacy with his attitude.

It will be really interesting to see what happens to him next, because at the moment I'm really not convinced he will be able to replicate what he did for this club.

Lots of respect when we were having the best season of most of our lives. As soon as it goes wrong he's absolutely slated and mocked. Think that's just the football fans these days. Bet wolves absolutely fucking hate Nuno now.

Did Nuno drag Wolves arse first back into the championship?

Wolves lost Jimenez to injury and Jota to Liverpool, and had a poor season, Nuno also tweaked his proven 'system' sold Doherty to Spurs, who has since looked half the player, and can't get a start, sometimes wonder if managers tweak systems and buy players that don't quite fit, because they see it as an ever evolving project, constantly tinkering in the belief thats the only way to stay one step ahead

And what's more Adolf did put the kids out in the field at the end!

Shame on you Wilder, sneaking out the back door. You should have stayed to the bitter end, duped your lass in to having a cyanide latte with a sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg and then blow your fucking brains out like a proper man. People these days have got no honour
Well I wasn't suggesting Chris goes that far, but as others have indicated in the end I think he became too big for his boots and I cannot fathom out why he got so arsey. I mean he didn't own the club, he managed it.

He has only got himself to blame IMO. His striker purchases were rubbish/mediocre at best last season and this season just over they were absolute crap. It was obvious last season that fire power was the issue and he recruited so badly one can hardly believe it happened. A fantastic rise and an equally dramatic fall, Atkinsesque style.
