So if Leonard is still our player and he scores the only goal and we lose would he still qualify for scapegoat status as theoretically it would be his fault that we lost?
Probably need a new word, "scapeloan" should do it.

Did we let Unsworth go on a free because we were being nice to him or was that a loan? - whatever it was that worked out well:rolleyes:

Leonard has a good record of scoring from outside the box. We have a poor record of leaving space outside of the box and allowing worldies to be smashed in to the top corner. I'd rather Leonard wasn't playing tbh.

In 228 appearances for Southend he only scored 20 goals. Ryan Leonard doesn’t have a ‘good record’ of scoring from anywhere.

Went for free although Wigan released him after he kept them up with that penalty.

If Leonard was still here he would be fourth choice midfieder for this game ahead of Lundstram on merit and Coutts on fitness (with Bash in defence). He looked like he was just getting into the swing of his cameos and believe he was only allowed to leave to generate cash (yeah yeah Brookes money yeah). He's good enough to hurt United especially if we get tardy again like we did agaisnt Preston.

CW confirms it was part of the deal for him to play against us. Written permission clause covered. Not sure any other loan to buy has this arrangement though may come back to bite us.

If so, then what absolute spineless bollocks.

It was deadline day, they needed to replace Saville and Leonard was their number 1 target. NO WAY are they going to pull out of the deal if we refuse to let him play in one game. No way are they going to refuse to pay £1.4m just because we won't let him play in one game.

We held all the cards, yet we've seemingly pandered to them for no reason whatsoever.

So we got £1.5m for Leonard on the agreement that he could play against us?

Millwall must have some of the toughest negotiators around...

I never saw anything in Ryan Leonard whilst he was here to suggest that he was anything other than a very ordinary footballer,to suggest that he is going to us to the sword on saturday is ridiculous.

It is a loan until January, and that is when they buy him. So loan rules can still apply now, if we had wanted them to when loaning him out..
It’s a bit like having a car that is ‘leased’ with a balloon payment at the end. They don’t tell you that you can’t drive it into a town car park in case it gets scratched. That’s because you still have to pay to repair it. And you can change the wheels if you want.o_O

I Mmght be wrong here SB as my memory of the McEwan era isn’t that sharp but wasn’t it Wigley who crossed the ball for Withe to head in and to celebrate he hold of Withe and raised fist to the Kop in celebration ?
Wigley had left us by then. We had Hansbury on loan from Birmingham and they had Withe on loan from us.

I feel like this has been discussed so much, that I almost don't care about it anymore.

You really should offer your services to Sheffield United Ricky. It's incredible how much better you know than the likes of Chris Wilder, Alan Knill and Stephen Bettis. Do you work in football?

We will never know the effect of letting Leonard play against us. If he plays well tomorrow, the lad who would have replaced him may have played better to take an opportunity to claim the position. If he plays poorly, likewise, the lad who played instead of him may have been even worse.

Like PeteN says earlier in the thread, the bogeymen we get ourselves worked up about very rarely come back to bite us... and often do the opposite.

I think it's more about 'situations' with United as opposed to individual 'bogeymen'. With us it's usually a case of think of the most outrageous and statistically improbable occurrence, add a twist of bitter irony and that's what usually befalls us. An ex of this parish, lumpen, one paced defensive midfielder with a shit scoring record, turning into Lionel Messi for the day and putting us to the sword is right up our strasse. :)

.

No.

The EFL official scapegoats for this season are Lunny and Leon.

The scapegoat deadline closed in August, so it is too late for Leonard to qualify .

He's saying that Wigley was playing for Birmingham and crossed for Withe to score the first goal. He was at Brum as we swapped him for Martin Kuhl at the end of the previous year. I have a vague recollection that this is correct: I think Wigley put the cross over from the right wing at the Kop end.

He is probably right about Wigley crossing for the first goal but the match is remembered as the Hansbury/Withe cock up on our part rather than Wigley/Withe as Wigley had already left us. Withe scored at Kop End in first half (header, I think) and Lane End (deffo from his foot) in 2nd half. Both were from crosses but I do not remember who made the crosses and I wouldn't be surprised if at least one of the was from Steve Wigley. Think Wigley scored the goal when we lost 1-0 at St Andrews later in same season

Reassuring that our fans so unanimously believe Leonard can't possibly do us any harm tomorrow.

No: Andy Kennedy scored that goal.

So you're happy to slag Wilder off for allowing him to play against us but not praise him for generating circa £700k on a player no one rated highly?

He's a Championship player - he will have some qualities at that level, but given he couldn't get in our side when he was here, is he someone we really need to fear? If one of the agreements of the deal was that he plays against us and we get £1.4m for him, which may/may not go towards paying for Norwood then I can't really see where we've gone wrong here. Should we never sell anyone to any Championship team?

Have faith that we are the better midfield ,up the blades .some rieght Fanny's on here
