Wilder - Subs

What did he do differently today to what he usually does?

Our game management was brilliant today, that along with some great performances won us the game.

A month or 6 weeks ago he would have brought on Stearman and hung on for 2-1. Likely finishing 2-2.
Having learned his lessons multiple times it was a whole different ball game bringing on forward players to see out time in THEIR half. Thus taking pressure off our back 5 and meaning they could not commit that extra player or 2 forward into our final third. Against Hull we completely outplayed them in the last few minutes when he did the same thing. Attack is a far more effective form of hanging on to see the game out, for us at least.

What did he do differently today to what he usually does?

Didn’t do the usual subs for dummies routine of a Defender to hold on to what we had thereby changing the shape. Kept the shape that was coping well (as it has in the past) without Stearman disrupting it. No changes for change sake. Tiring Duffy off and a very intelligent McG back in position as forward playmaker. Kept the pressure and momentum.

Been the one big criticism from most in his tenure here - his use of the subs and choice of. Sometimes less is more. Clarke fantastic when he came on today.

I will confess that based on his first two touches, he looked like he didn't know what a football was.

More than happy to be proven wrong with the remainder of his time on the pitch.

Attacking sub and didn't change the system.

McG has already shown himself to be a great Duffy replacement option, so no confusion.

When we bring Coutts on it can work but we lose our attacking style a bit, Stearman does a job but we're by no means guaranteed to keep a team out just because we have him on, and Johnson has yet to do anything.

To be fair of late he's started taking Duffy off for Clarke so it's not something out of the blue today. What it tells me is that Duffy maybe the sacraficial lamb for a new striker as Goldy is fucking ace at playing the deep role behind the strikers.

I think they’ll be fighting each other for that position depending what happens with Dowell. IF we get our hands on that striker

He did very similar to what he usually does. The difference is that we went on to win. Look back at the start of this season, when we were top of the league nobody was complaining about his subs. A poor run of form later and it’s “he’s never been good with the subs”.

I may be wrong. But I don't think so. What did he usually do at the start of the season?

Is it just me that thinks his subs are shite? Great manager but it’s a real gap in his ability.

When we’re not inventing anything and can’t break someone down, he brings Clarke on.

When we’re shitting ourselves and desperate to calm it down and keep the ball, he forgets Coutts plays for us and brings Clarke or Stearman on.

If we’re losing and the game is desperate for pace, he ignores Johnson and brings Clarke on. If we’re winning comfortably, he doesn’t take anyone off for a rest.

Great manager, dreadful subs almost every week. If you need an example, look no further than Clarke on vs Ipswich.

Eh? Brought Clarke on today and he scored.

I think Clarke for Duffy is a good sub to make.

McGoldrick knows how to play the role and it gives the opposition something to think about.

When it works it is. Wait for the equal and opposite whinging when it doesn’t. TV managers’ armchairs come complete with hindsight.

Wilder has generally been excellent in his use of substitutions. Another fans’ fallacy is in the course of being established. We’ll be back to throw-ins soon...

A contender for today’s highest ‘drivel to content’ award.

When Sharp scores he very rarely takes him off when it's still game on.

Although it’s been tried before replacing Duffy for Clarke and dropping mcgoldrick into the Duffy role.. finally paid off..

Who'd have thought, sometimes subs work, sometimes they don't. What i love is that Wilder has faith in his subs to do the job.

He trusts the capabilities of his players and that brings confidence - McG and Leon will have such a boost from this

Eh? Brought Clarke on today and he scored.

But it hardly ever works does it? That’s the point. He has one sub routine - take Duffy off for Clarke and drop McG back. Everything works occasionally.

The point is, he doesn’t adapt to the situation in my view. If we’re not winning, he brings Clarke on for Duffy regardless of the reason we’re not winning.

Now Dowell has signed and he has another attacking option, Wilder’s subs might improve.

He’s hardly been sat on the bench surrounded by potential match winners so it’s more likely that the sub he brings on will have little impact rather than win us the match.
