Same owd same old, we tried for X but ............ we tried for Y but .............. loan window still open till end of month we've heard it all before Chris. Looks like the Brooks money will be staying firmly in the owners trousers. We will do well to keep out of a relegation fight this season, the annoying thing is you could see this coming last Christmas.

I think games like these have affected Wilder's opinion that we can't always get away with playing an attacking midfielder behind two strikers:

I think we'd be foolishly naive to play like that all the time, although we should look to improve Saturday's team, which also wasn't good enough.

You are right but to balance it up, Norwich at home, wolves at home, Derby at home, pigs away etc. I agree you have to have a balanced approach but there were a lot of games against the "big" sides last sesson where our attitude was fuck you we are coming for you and it worjed.

We needed pace last season …… and we still need pace as we were VERY pedestrian on Saturday. o_O

We have learned that we cannot play with Lundstram and Evans in the same team and I also suspect that McGoldrick and Clarke are too alike to play together as well.

I suggest that we learn from our mistakes more quickly …… or it will indeed be a long season.

Still looking short of about 4 quality players imho, if we want to finish top 6 ……. therefore looking unlikely at the moment :(

Still better than being in L1 though with Adkins / Clough boring our t**s off ……..

But we ended up conceding after changing down their keeper and centre halves who were faffing about with it on the edge of their own box, opened play up and they cut through. None of the midfielders have pace to get back. The diagram of the 2nd was an embarrassment. So we set up defensively and then don’t defend

We’re playing three in midfield, as if that’s somehow more defensive, then getting caught out and cut through with ease against Swansea.
We’re neither full on attacking like we used to, and we’re not setup to be defensive.
So we’re leaking goals and not creating enough chances. Worst of both approaches.

You can have Duffy on the pitch and not chase down everything leaving us open - but means we’ll have a threat and quality when we have it.

Would rather drop one of the strikers and play Duff and Woodurn behind one.
Why play two strikers with no link player to create anything for them

The strange thing about this argument is, and I tend to agree with a lot of what has been put forward is if we are right and remember none of us are pro football managers/coaches how come Wilder/Knill see it differently, I am not talking about in hindsight but a lot on here ,again me included didn't really fancy the line up pre kick off, are we wrong about Lundstrum and Evans playing together, Macgoldrick and Clarke playing together, Stevens not up to it? In Wilder/Knill we trust ? I suppose we will see in the coming weeks, here's hoping.UTB

I don;t see why they can't play together but it seems to be the way they line up that's the issue.

If you had Lundstram sitting in front of the back four, Fleck ahead of him and Evans getting forward to support the attackers, it plays to all their strengths, but he tend to get them playing as a flat 3 which works for none of them.

"the best team got picked for saturday - for the opposition - whether they didn't do enough leading up to it or for tactical reasons"

paraphrased but that's the gist of CW opinion on the choice of starting XI
Looks like Duffy and Billy have a lot to do to get into the side.
- yet we seem to be far more effective when they are picked
worrying development?
we’re turning into a bog standard champ outfit
why conform?

Regarding transfers, my main concern isn't that we won't get any permanents signings in before the deadline. It's that we might not reinvest the Brooks money in a suitable way at all. There's no guarantee the same amount of money will be available when we get to January and beyond.

The least we should've done in this window is bought a good attacking player who'll be an asset - that's what I call suitable reinvestment and a suitable Brooks replacement. Whether that's a striker or an attacking midfielder.

Luke Freeman, Adam Armstrong, Jack Marriott, Sam Gallagher, Lucas Joao, Marcus Maddison. Somebody like that. But instead it looks like we're going to be getting McGoldrick on a free transfer and a couple of loans. It's not good enough.

It's not (assuming we won't get anyone in that we actually wanted) and if we don't spend a wedge on a forward who'll improve us this window I'd be asking questions not of the owners, ok they're a bit hard up but Wilder has said he's happy with the budget and that "he's not even touched the Brooks money" so I'm looking at the footballing side.

Leaving it late when you can't brute force your way to getting signitures with money is a dangerous game.

Wilder sounded pretty downbeat there (reading between the lines, it sounds like he isnt getting his main targets, and our better budget is still nowhere near other clubs in the league)....He did suggest he is picking teams to deal with the opposition which does seem a bit of a change of ethos.

Not sure I agree with him that Saturday's team was the best one. If he isnt going to play Duffy for whatever reason, it's really important we get another flair player in. A lack of creativity isnt exactly going to win us football matches.

I usually feel positive and buzzing after a Wilder interview. I didnt at all after that.

It'll be squarely on Wilder if things go tits up.

At least I’ve just read that Waghorn is going to Derby and not us, glad we haven’t wasted £5m on him.

Move on and find someone worth £5m now, answers on a postcard.

He did this last season when he started giving opposition managers credit and "likes" (Nottingham Forest away was a case in point). He bigs up Pulis in that interview in the same way. Expect a capitulation on the basis that Pulis is a quality manager and we can't hope to compete against such experience and financial muscle. Fucking hell, he sounds like he's lost his balls!

Why the successful shape and attacking mindset was ever changed from league one into the great start last season I don’t understand.

We lost our nerve after the Fulham home game. The overlapping centre back tactic was greatly reduced from that game onwards as well.

I think we will make one permanent signing, unfortunately it’s likely to be Nugent, another striker with no pace to be paired with Clarke, Mcgoldrick first option off the bench and Billy dropped further down the pecking order.

You know if I was trying to buy a house for six weeks then I got gazumped by another bidder because they offered a cineworld season ticket and free kebabs for a year on top of the asking price, I'd be pretty fucked off

Chris wears his heart on his sleeve, for better or worse, when things go well he really shows it. I'd probably be more worried if he didn't seem arsed

Hate to say it, but if basing our selection and tactics solely around the opposition is the approach we're going to take, then it's the beginning of the end for Wilder.

As much as it pains me to say but i think you're right Ricky.

The absolute reason i've loved CW so much as manager is that he's, so far, gone out to win every game playing the way he wants to play and not giving a fuck about who the opposition is.

Yes it's cost us points at times, Bristol City springs to mind, but it's won us more points than it's lost us and a win and a loss is still worth more than 2 draws, which seems to have been his philosophy.

If he starts trying to out think himself and his selections then there is only one way we're heading and it's not upwards.

Let's all be honest he messed up with the starting line up on Saturday. If he sees the error of his ways then great but if he starts being stubborn then we could be in for a long hard season.
