Well Tufty certainly talks the talk and can hopefully walk the walk

Time for us to be positive and get fully behind him - get yer ST's renewed waverers!

At least he talks in a way saying how it is . Good man up to press . Very impressive. . The other chap Adkins talked in PLC motivational banter that means fuck all with being helicoptered in , blue sky thinking , drilling down to the problem and all that shite and nonsense .

I will call him Wilder , Tufty sounds like someone from Eton or ex spitfire pilot . If I shouted now then Tufty if I saw him in the petrol station , would he say hello or fuck off you twat .

Wilder is totally different in approach to Adkins. He is not going to muck about. It has helped him having so many out of contract but still had decisiveness to list 7 players. His actions in 2-3 weeks have been more decisive than Adkins in nearly 12 months. Time will tell if such swift action sees an upward curve in results/performances.
It will be interesting to see how many of the 7 listed he will manage to offload before August, and if not how this may restrict his recruitment.

No problem moving these lads on.

They will be queuing up for overpaid immobile midfielders; of which 2 can barely run and 1 can barely walk.

If they don't fancy those they can always take their pick from two poor full backs who cannot defend, a winger who cannot do anything and a striker who in his head is Maradona but in reality plays football more like Madonna.

I can't see any club being stupid enough to buy any of those fucking failures, and if they do their forums equivalent of Roygbiv views from will be interesting !

They are conditioned in failure and mediocrity and for everyone's sake I hope Wilder has none of the 7 near the club when training commences to spread their poison and mediocrity amongst them.

I reckon Wilder wants Long out as well, he's hardly pleaing with him to stay and I'm not surprised Long said a few weeks ago changes weren't needed, clearly Wilder fundamentally disagrees. Fuck him off and get a goalie that wants to play for us that can talk to his defence and have some presence.

Bang on the money lad.

I agree. Not sure what bargaining chip Long has really? Maybe his agent has done a good job of touting him around on potential but he is not a kid anymore. He was ok last season and improved but nothing special. He was competent and made some good saves but also still made mistakes.

I would not be devestated if we had a new number one to start the season. I get impression Wilder has moved on and is already lining up his replacement.

Based on that interview I expect we may see one or two having their contracts mutually cancelled with us paying a portion of their remaining year deals – certainly seemed a possibility for Hammond, so can't rule it out for others.

People hear things in different ways but I interpreted it as he had ruled out Baptiste.
Nice to have the senior players at the club as quality players ie Sharp and Brayford and Basham to a certain extent.

Yes it seems almost certain Baptiste will not be returning. Shame as he was the one good loanee we had and would be excellent at this level. It seems that we will have 3 brand new centre backs coming in. Would like a couple of up and comers like Barnsley did with Mawson and Roberts; and one maybe experienced one too.

The reality is there is still a lot of work to do on the team and squad. We need a keeper (2 if Long goes), 2/3 centre backs, a couple of midfielders and a big striker with a presence. That is just for starters regardless of squad players - so another 7/8 needed to come in.

Well I quite like Tufty, I think it sounds like a character from an Enid Blyton story. As for Adkins he just spoke rhetoric IMO.

If I saw CW at a petrol station I would yell "oi Tufty!" and risk his wrath, but keep the engine running for a quick exit if needed.

Thank you for taking the trouble to compile that.

I very much like what I'm hearing about the need for a physical striker and the peremptory dismissal of the 'defensive midfielder'. Funnily enough, two things I've argued consistently. Nice to know that our splendid new manager agrees with me rather more than most on here...

Bergen Blade, Bergen Blade, are you listening...your tactical theories took a hell of a beating...:)

You've never understood a word of them, so how the hell would you know?

Unlike you I've been very positive about Wilder's appointment from day one. Finally we have a manager looking to play modern, effective, attacking and entertaining football. From researching and reading about his merits and listening to his interviews his football philosophy seems to be similar to what I'd like to see. I've agreed with and praised pretty much all his decisions so far.

Terminology isn't that important. I don't want any Blades players to be poor at something either. It's a huge advantage if they are complete players. Sometimes you have to make compromises, and sometimes certain roles will be restricted if it helps a team achieve the optimal balance. N'Golo Kante had a fantastic season at Leicester, but he scored only once and didn't bomb into the opposition box as often as a lot of other midfielders. He has been rightly compared to Claudio Makelele, the Sergio Busquet has scored twice in 83 apps for Spain. He has scored 6 goals in 247 Barcelona appearances. This is a worse scoring record than Nick Montgomery's for us. He does not go forward a lot. This shows that what is popularly called "holding"/"defensive" midfielders do exist and they can be a part of successful sides.

In today's interview Wilder's quote on central midfielders was:

I expect them to be competent in all areas. They've got to win their headers, they've got to win their tackles and they have to pass the ball forwards. If there's an opportunity to get in the box you've got to get in the box. I don't want them out on the left wing, I don't want them out on the right wing, I want them to play in the middle of the park.

Looking at how Northampton played last season, it was 4-2-3-1 most of the time. When I watched them their two central midfielders were competitive and hard working, yet useful on the ball. It is no surprise to me that the likes of Hammond, Baxter, Coutts are unwanted as they aren't suited to Wilder's philosophy of a energetic high pressing game. Adkins didn't realise this and foolishly even played them all at the same time. It will be different under Wilder. Basham, for his fitness and energy, may be kept around, but long term I don't expect him to remain a first choice, as he's rather limited in possession. Whiteman may have a chance, but I expect a couple of midfield signings to arrive before the season starts.

It's no surprise that Baxter wasn't kept as he's a dirty scouse druggie ;-)

Adkins spoke well in his interviews last summer. Honestly sounded a breath of fresh air compared to the dour Clough. He said all the right things and I think most fans were impressed by his positivity and freshness. Sadly 12 months later the same interviews had zero substance to them after a disastrous season.

Wilder has been impressive in his interviews but as others have said we will wait till August before we can start assessing properly.

Interview will be up later today apparently on BBC Radio Sheffield website.

Disagree that Adkins spoke well, he hardly said anything interesting despite going on for ever, seemingly very afraid to reveal things about his philosophy. Clough may have sounded dour, but I enjoyed a lot of his interviews. There were things said between the lines which revealed stuff, although interviewers often didn't pick up on it. Despite some real weaknesses, Clough was and is a real football man, whereas Adkins was more like an average motivational speaker. Wilder is a straight talker, willing to share things, showing confidence in his philosophy. Compared to Clough he seems to think a more attack-minded approach can be used, and he's more clear on which player types are needed to get the balance right for his sides.

I'm sorry. I abandoned that Dostoyevskian failed attempt at self-justification early doors.

Carry on with your videos, arrows and dots. It's all bollocks. Brian Clough, Bill Shankly, Bill Nicholson and Bob Paisley knew this simple fact. So do I; you don't. Here it is. Pay attention and you'll be the wiser for it. Football games are won by having eleven players in your team better than the eleven playing for the opposition. A moment of genius from a highly talented individual or team unit shatters the technological crap beyond repair.

Each of the hugely successful managers above would have had you and your diagrams and statistics and all the other paraphernalia out of the dressing-room within seconds. They would then have turned to eleven proper footballers and said "Forget all that shite. You're better than the tossers next door. Go play."

Midfielder - the job defines itself. Always has. Chris Wilder knows that.

Confused and clueless as usual. Was "Go play" Ranieri's instruction last season? Pathetic, even by your standards!

Including the notions that we need a tall mobile striker and that 'defensive midfielder' is a contradiction in terms and a load of bollocks. Odd that I've been saying both those things for years, to much derision on here, without consulting Tufty or anyone else.

However much it hurts people will come to realise (probably long after I'm gone - true greatness is often not recognised at the time) that I know what I'm talking about...

I had a few minutes last night to look at the wit and wisdom of Pinchy. I would have liked a few days really because it is fascinating how such a master of the English language, a man apparently whose stock in trade is his eloquence and mastery of skilled debate descends into patronising fellow posters so often without actually engaging in the argument. The gambit of "you are an intellectual inferior and therefore not worthy of debate or consideration" (what I call the "fly swat posts") are purely and simply a cop out from someone who tries to fashion his winning argument from the false premise of a patronising put down.

So far from some of the Pinchy posts I have read, he has been completely wrong in his judgement of players and managers. I now fear for Wilder's tenure because when Pinchy endorses him I fear that he is doomed.

You are adverse to change fella.
Move on and go with the flow nowt wrong with arrows and dots that's how the young uns are brought up.

The idea that managers just say "Go play" is stupid. But at the same time, tactics and such like do get needlessly over complicated at times. More so as time has gone on.

I think this is the first time I've seen Bergen lose his shit!

Football games are won by having eleven players in your team better than the eleven playing for the opposition.

Given your belief in the above, can we at least agree that a shite manager can destroy your principle, even if a good one can't overcome it?

Captain Marvel was famed for following your approach, and he had some proper players. Yet.....

We can all see merit in what a boffin posts and also what a dinosaur posts; there's never a real right or wrong.

As long as we all keep posting what we think and keep our minds open to change we will be OK.

Thing is the Forum gives us all a chance to consider all sorts of opinions.

You know, I have put my arguments so regularly and so consistently over the years that many know them off by heart. Occasionally I weary of explaining the bleeding obvious to those who sadly have been brought up in the wake of Bassett's deeply flawed legacy and known nothing better and, on those occasions, use shorthand instead.

There is no-one like me on any other football forum. There is no need. Everyone accepts that football should be played on the ground by means of pass and move, employed with purpose. Be it Arsenal or Leicester; Barca or Bayern, the fundamentals are the same, the variations are of detail, not principle.

Sadly, in S2 there remains a job for me. I dearly wish it were otherwise.

Has he said that? Might change a few views on here??. Hope so...

By Pele, Tufty is really beginning to impress me. I think I owe him an apology for not welcoming him earlier (not that he has the slightest concern or even idea about that!). Welcome Chris. You've made a great impression. Let's take this to the pitch in August and onwards...:)

Pinchy, Pinchy you've been hacked.

Agreed. However, of 17 players released / listed, 2 of them are Adkins' players. The damage done by Clough is in a different league.

Pinchy, Pinchy you've been hacked.

I've just spent 45 minutes listening to the interview and now even more enthused:

1. He's going to play proper football. He emphasised that we will not be lumping it forward.
2. He intends to bring in not one but three much needed centre-backs,
3. He knows which players he wants, and not necessarily the fans' flavour of the month (e.g, he ain't interested in the Mansfield bloke even if supporters, many of whom have never seen him play, are).
4. Talk of 'defensive' or 'sitting' midfielders drives him "crazy". Like yours truly, he's not content with someone doing half a job.
5. Youngsters will get a chance when they are ready, not because they are...well...young.
6. Whilst winning is the essential thing, he wants to entertain and (his words not mine), 'play football'. Happily he does not subscribe to the silly S2 fallacy that the two are mutually incompatible.
7. He wants to be appreciated for his management, not for being a Blade.
8. He has an honesty and integrity about him. He even admits to still talking to Bassett. Well, nobody's perfect. I just hope it's not about style of football...from his other comments, it would appear not.
9. We are going to have to be formally introduced to most of the team next season. That's a major plus, by the way!

All that said, interviews don't win a single point. Liverpool would have been relegated under the great Bob Paisley if they did...our own great John Harris was no media star, either. So, whilst I never seek to dampen enthusiasm, premature exhilaration is best avoided (ask the Pigs...:):))
