Wilder on Centre Half Situation

I think like some hae mentioned we will have Semple as a peripheral backup. If so I'd hope we signed 3 players to compete for the 2 slots.

Any 3 of Ryan Tafazolli, Aaron Pierre, John Egan, Curtis Nelson or Kyle McFadzean would enthuse and impress me.

I agree about signing three, with Basham and Semple as further cover.

I mentioned that Pierre could be a target as he meets Wilder's criteria, and two you mention there do as well - Egan and Nelson, both have good athleticism. And he's already said McFadzean's a 'very good player'.

i quite liked Tom Parkes from bristol rovers when they were in the conference, strong, in conf team of the year 2014/2015 & part of a defence kept 38 clean sheets in last 2 years but now bristol rovers are in the same league as us thats not going to happen now because why would he leave a guaranteed starting place & bristol rovers dont need to sell anyone as their been taken over by Jordanian Al-Qadi family, founders of the Arab Jordan Investment Bank

but heard good things aristote nsiala, conor goldson

There's a question mark I guess on where Wilder sees Basham's future – if it's at CB then perhaps we'll only bring in two powerful types.

Very encouraged to see Semple mentioned – for me he was the best we had in the Charlton playoff final. Admittedly the only time I've seen him, but he looked very strong and had decent positional sense.
Yes I have known of semple for some time as my son knows him.
Meadowhead lad and been with club since 8 years old.
Follows Blades home and away when not playing for 18s or 21s apparently.

Fingers crossed for the boy.

Only down side is he is half Scottish !!

As I read it, we only need to sign 2 centre backs with Basham and Semple for cover. With a new CM coming in and Whiteman as cover for Basham.

I could only see Basham starting in midfield if we play three centrally, and I don't think we will due to Sharp being better with a strike partner.

If that's the case then maybe signing a third centre half is less important.

Callum Semple is an out and out left footed centre back. Basham can play all over.
I would say 3 new centre halves and Semple ,,, Basham as cover.

Maybe Semple given bench time or a run in JPT at some point as the season goes on.

At long last .... Talking about signing and bringing through some good solid centre backs.....

Burn like Hammond was chased and chased last season . Burn does not seem hungry enough to join us , and IMO is tard with the same brush , with the Hammond syndrome .

Kilgallon is past his sell buy date and I feel would not be fit , mental , hungry , focused enough to do a job both Wilder and fans expect .

We need leaders and neither of them players fit the bill . 2no important positions that have to be right first time , with no room for mistakes , manoeuvre , especially even more so if Long is stopping and will be in the net .

UTB

I fear he'll be in the net. Not sure he'll be stopping though....

Far too much Bladey 'mates and parents' stuff here. We're engaged in professional football aren't we, not Sunday morning under-15s?

Anyone heard from Diego's Daft Dad lately?....

I think there's a good chance that we won't be playing 2 in CM.However, I could see Basham playing next to an athletic box to box midfielder if we did so. I think he'll play to genuine attacking players on the wing.

Unless his daft dad has changed his name to Jade, it seems unlikely? :)

The usual bollocks about major international clubs wanting him. Great news for Juve; he's available. Perhaps they haven't heard yet...

Tufty gave him his 'chance' at Northampton. Clearly he saw enough...maybe the Wonderboy and Daft Daddy De Juve should have worked with Cloughie (who knew a bit about playing De Juve's position) rather than behaving like a petulant brat and encouraging such behaviour?

He could have always taken on a different, journalistic persona to try and get his Diego one more chance?

Edgar was shite and Baptiste was never going to stay beyond May.
We're in league one, Bill. Adkins got rid of Collins, the first manager to do this in what seems like an age.

Edgar wasn't a shite league one defender and Baptiste was a class above this level at least, so just on this evidence alone I'm inclined to think Adkins would've sorted the defence out, not necessarily these two players but he would've sorted it and all the shite Adkins did this isn't one thing to chuck at him.

Adkins only signed Edgar after a 4-0 mauling by Gillingham, I can't believe any professional manager left it so long to address our CB issues (Baptiste was hardly here long). Edgar was average and Baptiste was very good for this level but was only ever going to be temporary, I suspect Edgar would have signed permanently but hope we can do better than him tbh. Not addressing CB issues early enough is a huge thing to chuck at him...even if (eventually) signing those two players was decent/good.

Edgar would've been signed permanently because Adkins won't have been aware of all the better options out there.

Correct Ricky, Edgar wasn't hard enough for the big centre half position. At this level you need at least one 6ft 3in monster to dominate the penalty area and he was never gonna be that man.

I'm hoping Wilder is going to address this with at least one of his centre half signings .

Did he have the resources to sort the issue out at the start of the season or did he go into the boardroom after the Gills game and say we need a defender desperately after that debacle, can I have the funds to get one please?

We will never know unfortunately, what we do know is that he persisted with that useless bastard Collins at centre half after this and even had him as one of his '6 senior' staff !!!!

One of many useless bastards that shouldn't have had a clean slate.

He had the funds to sign Sharp and Woolford. And the funds to chase after Dan Burn, so yes, he had the funds to sign a player in a position it was so obvious we were lacking in.

He fucked up with the Woolford signing but he obviously knew Murphy was going and needed a replacement, well that went tits up. Sharp did well last season so we'll give him that one.

I agree it was a position we should've strengthened but Adkins perhaps didn't see it as a priority which is probably more fool him. As Les said, we'll never know but i do think he'd have sorted it this coming season which admittedly is not as quick as we all wanted.

It's a pity that in football things aren't revealed after 30 years like in politics - then one day we'd find out ;-)

Just compare the urgency to the attitude of Adkins last year. Absolute wanker tried to prove Clough wrong by playing Collins.

Yeah, but Adkins was a motivator, dontcha know?

Absolute wanker tried to prove Clough wrong by playing Collins.

Obviously in retrospect that was a major mistake, but an honest one to make that was perhaps influenced by what we could bring in. Plenty on here would have thought it a good decision back in September in that purple patch of decent form. I don't think it was influenced by some sort of egotistic sense of "showing Clough he was wrong".

Is Wilder also an "absolute wanker" by giving McNulty and Scougall another chance?

Is he the guy with the Neil Shipperly physique?

Seems to be a lot of hate for Adkins, all I can think it's born of what we all expected from him when he took the job not coming to pass.

He didn't do the job and paid the price for failure.

His reputation now has dropped further because of this, as a football manager that's your main asset so he'll struggle to get another decent appointment, at least for a while.
