to the West Indies team last week?

I fear Joe Root is making the same mistake as Gary Sobers did in 1968!

He shouldn't have bloody declared late yesterday.

He tried to win the game instead of trying to save the game.

We are 1 nil up in the series - error of judgment declaring at ....for 8 - should have gone to the end of the innings, even if it was only 20/30/40 runs extra and we would have eaten into the last days playing time.

Smart move. If he wins he's hailed as a great captain who's not afraid to take a risk, if he loses then no one will accuse him of declaring too late and playing it safe.

There's a lot right in that - it's also ironic that all yesterday's commentators (Gower, Botham, Hussein et al) stated that a lead of 200 on a deteriorating wicket would be sufficient for England to bowl Windies out and win.

Hope the Windies do it. Will set up an exciting last test. Thanks to ESPN for broadcasting the match here in the States.

Fair play, I thought it was a bold move by Root to declare at 490-8 but unlucky it didn't pay off. Still, it sets it up nicely for the final test.
