Wilder is to blame for that.

Wrong. Don’t listen to commentators they often talk bollocks. He was the only player on his toes challenging for the first goal and had not choice but to get behind a 95mph shot for the second. Difficult job being a goalkeeper, we switched off collectively for both goals and the third just needed O’Connell’s foot through the ball. Forgiven for it as he is otherwise outstanding.

Pissed off with the way we let them back in as a collective. We win as a team we lose as a team. Wilder takes a portion of blame for me. Wrong substitutions. When you’re in control, don’t shuffle things around.

I wasn’t listening to the commentators, unfortunately I witnessed it with my own eyes

Bad decisions all round I’m afraid. Nothing would stick when we had the ball we kept giving it back to them. We do have a habit of clocking off early. But if I was Simon Moore I would be annoyed if I didn’t get the gloves for the Middlesbrough game.

What's he done to deserve the gloves? Very poor in the cup game, and doesn't look Championship standard when he had spells in the team last season. I think we'd destroy Henderson if we took him out now. It's time to rally round him.

Deano, has cost us 5 points this season maximum.tonight and Leeds at home. I reckon he’s saved us more. But all I can think of is Rotherham? Surly he’s done better )

I accept you’ll have paid more attention to this than me. But I seem to recall quite a few matches won in the last 20 minutes this season, presumably after substitutions.

You have a wonderful manager that’s got you punching well above the budget he’s been given. I find it odd that he should get any stick at all.

I never thought I'd say it but Pork talking (more ) sense ?!

Bullshit , he gave them the i initiative to press and fuck us which they did.. we put green players on the pitch to coast home.. all wilders fault, all the ficking lot..
Fuckin idiot.
No its Wilder and his fucking stupid football coaching for numpties guide to substitutions. EVERY FUCKING TIME WHEN WILL THE TWAT JUST ACCEPT HE DOESN'T HAVE TO CHANGE THE BASTARD SHAPE!!!!!!!
Hell yeah. When will that twat stop us playing the best football I've seen in 30 plus years? When will that twat stop making basic goalkeeping mistakes? When will he stop managing limited resources by substituting tired playet ahead of a massive game?

How exactly is Chris Wilder to blame for 3 individual errors leading to goals?
With both Dowell and Norwood giving the ball away in dangerous areas + the body language from some the players I thought the 3-0 scoreline flatted us. CW thought we had won it! and his substitutions reflected it. should have been the usual steadying McGoldrick, Duffy and maybe Stearman, but decided to give a few players a game and finished up dropping us 2 points. CW’s interview afterwards said we were outstanding? sorry Chris, not for me... everyone makes mistakes own-up, Hendo did!

What’s your take on what he cost us tonight? Keepers hit their peak in their late 20s/early 30s for a reason. Henderson demonstrated that tonight.

for instance... the save he when Norwich went clean through last week. Total the plus & minus points up then make a realistic decision!!
some people can't wait to shoot!!

The substitutions changed the dynamic. Little threat after that so Villa were able to settle and push up.

Exactly this. And this is a recurrent problem, which is by no means unique to Wilder. Wenger used to do it frequently towards the end of his time at Arsenal when he stopped winning things or beating the other top teams. The similarities of an otherwise innovative manager with a brilliant footballing team anachronistically taking off his best ball players and attacking threats in favour of 'muck and bullets' to see out a game, are striking.

So many managers believe that they are tightening things up by bringing on a defender, when in reality, depending upon which player they take off in order to get the defender on, they often actually undermine the shape of the entire team to the extent that it comes under far more pressure than would otherwise have been the case.

Last night, we removed a player capable of getting hold of the ball in midfield and keeping possession, to get a defender on. As a result, we weakened the midfield dreadfully because, for everything good that Basham brings to the team at wing-back, he is simply not capable of getting on the ball and keeping it in midfield. That's why he's not a Championship midfielder. Pushing him into midfield 'to give us legs in there' or to 'break things up' is such a backward and flawed approach which is completely at odds with all the positive and innovative things that Wilder does as a coach.

The consequence is invariably that we fail to keep possession and the ball just keeps coming back at the defence.

For 75 minutes last night, the defence was barely threatened. Villa hadn't had a shot on target. After the substitutions, though, Villa managed to play higher up the pitch and ask a few questions of the defence and, although some Blades think that we have a decent defence (based on statistics), I maintain my opinion that it is a brittle defence but, fortunately, because we are invariably on the front foot, it rarely gets put under pressure. When it does, it panics. That's why we keep seeing that teams only need a 5 or 10 minute spell in a game to score against us.

Last night, Wilder could take Dowell off by all means, but in doing so he absolutely had to get Duffy on in his place to get on the ball and keep it from coming back into our defensive third constantly. Had he done so, the opportunity for the individual errors to occur probably would not have even arisen.

It really is a blind spot amongst all that is new and exciting about what Wilder and Knill do, and it's costing us plenty of points as the same thing happened at Rotherham and at home to Stoke, for instance.

Of course, it didn't happen in League 1 or even at the beginning of last season, when, in fact, we started to build a reputation for our ability to manage a lead through to the final whistle by playing possession football (various videos on YouTube attest), but then we had Coutts getting on the ball and playing one-twos all around the middle of the park and totally dictating the tempo. He did it this season too in a cameo against Hull when we easily saw out a 1-0 wiin.

Wilders interview was much more relaxed than I expected.
I don’t know how he keeps it together. I was on my knees at home at 90 mins, did half a bottle of wine from their first goal to full time.

Just watched the highlights and fuck me, the first is pathetic, the 2nd worse (didn’t seem to want to catch anything all game) and the 3rd was just Sunday league.

I txt my mate and said this game is ripe for Duffy now it is stretched. The subs exclusively have not lost us that game. But I do agree to the extent that the side that finished the game would offer zero threat if we started with it. No problem with bringing Cranie on as he needed minutes given he’ll be playing the next 2 but Washington is just gash. The good thing is that Hogan will now be the change up top.

TBH I don't get how wilder can be blamed, if crainie, didsy and Washington had made the three errors that directly led to to goals I may have agreed but it was two terrible keeper mistakes and a very uncharacteristic crap clearance by joc that led to the goals, bizarre that three mistakes by two usually very reliable players led to our away draw, not defeat though I admit it feels like it, but under no circumstances was that Chris wilders fault.

It’s a tactic that drives me up the wall. If we’re dominating possession of the ball, we face little threat. When we take offensive players off, 9/10 we invite the opposition to collectively move 30 yards up field and put us under pressure. Mistakes, more often than not, are enforced errors. Yes, of course we can’t account for what Deano and JOC did, but those that are denying that poor substitutions at least laid the foundations, and invited them onto us, need to look again.

I had no issue with Crainie coming on, just not for Dowell.

The subs shouldn’t have mattered, 3 nil with 7 mins left even the team that played Barnet should have seen it out.

Wilder did say that there were choice words in the dressing room between the players, I hope Billy gave the defenders a slap. At 84 mins I was thinking how much good this would do our goal difference, then we go to sleep.

Right, subs.

Madine for McG? Madine tiring and McG better at holding the ball up, McG also better at the defensive side, tracking back and marking
Dowell for Cranie - Tactical - Pushing Basham into midfield and making us more solid and giving us more legs in there
Sharp for Washington - Fresh legs to make runs into the corners and chase their defenders down

All 3 changes make perfect sense. They would have scored zero goals without us making individual errors.
Good points.
Nicely reasoned.
I'd have expected a fourth from Billy actually.

I don’t know who to blame for that last 10 mins?. It was just 3 dreadful mistakes and the respective players must hold their hands up and acknowledge their mistakes!!. I’m slightly annoyed but we move on to Tuesday night against boro!!.
I think we can guarantee that wilder won’t be a happy man tonight. UTB
Wednesday night.

I've now seen the first goal numerous times and I think Hendo neshed it.

It that situation plenty of keepers come and take the lot.

It reminded me of Bassett to Bryson and his silly hand comment.

could be his fault bringing martin cranie on and defending it but we was 3-0 up at the time so can't say it's his fault. Hnederson should be dropped i'm afraid Moore should be given a chance now. The fucking points we have dropped is disgraceful

The only thing I'll say is Wilder is also a fan
He should know by now that if we sit deep, try to defend, try to coast towards a simple straight forward and deserved victory, we won't get it

Allow a team seven seconds of meaningful pressure And we'll concede, we always do and we always will

We allowed Villa seven minutes of it, not seven seconds, so the ending was hardly a surprise

Top quality post
I feel exactly the same,
If something works, stick with it

A substitution when winning, and winning easily should be about fresh legs in a like for like position

There should only be a need to make tactical changes if you're losing and what you've been trying to do isn't working

I'm not turning on anyone. Just pointing out where the mistake lays. Were were totally dominating them till the crap subs. We move on. Wilder himself admits hes always learning. Take a leaf from his book ffs.
No mate. We were totally dominating them until Henderson made 2 uncharacteristic errors and O'Connell made 1. It has nothing at all to do with Cranie coming on or Washington or McGoldrick. Henderson and O'Connell have been brilliant for us all season, which makes it even more galling. But, that's football. Players make individual mistakes and sometimes they get away with it and sometimes they don't. It was cruel last night, we didn't get what we deserved, but can't you just put that down to some freakish individual errors by two of our most reliable players, and not be looking to blame the manager or whoever else instead?

Some right tripe in this thread.

You were absolutely cruising. Wilder brought Cranie on at 3-0 in the 74th minute!!!

That was Wilder’s insurance policy and good management. At that point you shut up shop and see the game out. The only thing that stops you winning is the sort of thing that happens once a decade (if that).

If you’d won 3-0 or 3-1 (as you should’ve) it goes down as the perfect away performance and Wilder is a genius.

3 terrible individual errors cost you and no amount of different substitutions or tactics can legislate for that. Villa didn’t create one goal, you gave them three.

Definitely not Wilder’s fault.

Up The Owls!

Well said! I wish more Owls fans were intelligent like this.;)

Disappointing just to get a point but let’s face it, for 80 minutes we ran a multi-million quid, Premiership-quality squad into the ground.
Who would have predicted that 18 months ago?

Exactly! But...I really hate these "if someone had told you that 18 months ago/at the start of the season/....you'd snap their hand off" type things, because they are hypothetical nonsense. Better to just say, we've come a lot further and done a lot better than most people would have expected. And we have. And we've not finished yet!;)

After sleeping on it I have got up and I'm still proper pissed off that we somehow managed to throw that game away at 0-3 on 80mins Villa are a team who have run out of ideas, not had a shot on target all game and their heads had dropped. I have only seen the stands empty faster at the sty. Henderson is a great young keeper but has the media talk of interest from the top European team got into his head ? The poor lad did nothing right all night but hey ho that's why we have him the mistakes are not hurting Manchester United he is still on a steep learning curve. Still plenty for him to learn and he needs to toughen up a bit he still doesn't have that presence it the six yard box where everything should be is. Yeah he was weak for the first goal should have done better on the second but talk of dropping him for the Boro game is just madness (no doubt Boro will have two big fuckers on him at every corner they get) when the alternative is Moore.
No excuses for JOC miskicking like a school kid in a panic he is a seasoned pro and should do much better. I'm not sure how Wilder can legislate for such mistakes yeah his substitutions were crap but none of them cost us the game unless you want to blame McGoldrick for shooting when a simple pass gives someone a tap in. The last ten minutes last night was the perfect shitstorm of errors and things going wrong none of them too serious until you put them all together and end up with a plane crash. I still find it hard to believe how after being so much in control we managed to throw a win away. A 0-3 win at Villa would have had the top six teams shitting themselves but now there is little pressure on the top two and the chasers are given renewed hope of catching us.

I strongly disagree. He was the only one that reacted to the first goal and the forward simply had the jump on him and was physically bigger. No one else reacted.

The second was a 95mph shot that he could do nothing but get his body behind. I can only surmise that you listen to commentators too much. Henderson is an easy fall guy for both goals. We switched off, that’s why he was exposed.
Bloody hell, I know some people love Henderson, but that’s going some. Two clear and manifest errors, by the goalkeeper. And where does this “95 mph” come from?

He’s a good keeper, but he made a massive mistake against Leeds and two more last night. Let’s be right.

Anyone blaming Wilder for this is fucking clueless. 3-0 with 10 minutes to go he could have brought the u13s on and still seen the game out.
Henderson making a complete mess of two simple saves and JOC slicing a clearance are too Blame
