Wilder is to blame for that.

Question for any keepers out there, someone posted last night - re the second goal - that keepers shouldn't parry or push a shot they can't hold wide, but centrally. Is that correct?

Generally you'd want to push it wide away from the danger zone.

Keepers have apparently been encouraged to parry more in recent times due to more movement on the balls.

I thought Hendo could have held on to the shot but if he'd tried and failed, and they'd scored, he'd have been criticised even more.

My concern over him was more for the first. Imho a keeper has to come and clear the lot out for those. I honestly felt, and still do, that he neshed it.

It was suggested the way to deal with that was to parry it centrally i.e. forwards.
Yeah it was but I don’t see why.
If it’s central it means more opposition players are likely to be bearing down on it, and they can choose to kick to the left or right rather than having to contend with a narrow, single angle.

What’s pissing me off almost as much as the result are people actually sticking up for that result. Nobody can seriously be content with that result?
It was a disappointing result but no matter how many childish tantrums some of our so called fans throw they won't change it.

Methinks some people need to grow and get a grip on their lives.

Precisely. Just wanted to check before writing it off as complete bollocks.

Fuckin idiot.

Hell yeah. When will that twat stop us playing the best football I've seen in 30 plus years? When will that twat stop making basic goalkeeping mistakes? When will he stop managing limited resources by substituting tired playet ahead of a massive game?

I wish I was you, I wish I could wait till the day after when I’d had time to think about what I posted ...

Easy to sit about and wait, I was fucked off we had that stitched up and who’s doesn’t bring Duffy on? They’d have potted it for they last ten..

Shit substitutions to keep squad players happy, it wasn’t Bolton they had footballers PROPER footballers on the fucking pitch..

Personally I think Wilder has every right to expect the team he put out, and the substitutes he put on, to defend a 3 goal lead with less than 10 minutes to play.

I would have put McGoldrick on. Wouldn't have brought Crainie on, but that isn't why we drew.

Individual errors and a collective panic cost us. I don't think that's Wilder's fault.

One final point: I may be wrong, but I think that's the fourth time in my life that we've lost a 3 goal lead. Twice (Ipswich 2003 and Brighton 1989) we came back to win. Which makes the last time we went 3-0 up and didn't win Reading in 1986-7, when they scored 3 times in 5 minutes just after the hour. It's a once in a generation thing (hopefully). It's a fluke, aided by individual errors from good players. It was awful, and I feel awful about it and feel awful for Billy, but we can come back from it.
I was thinking, whilst at Sheffield FC today, about asking on here, when did we last lose a three goal lead.
I recalled Brighton 1989, lowest gate of the season too.
I was thinking who will answer my question and I correctly thought Revolution or Silent Blade.
But I didn't need to ask .
Ironically, the first track playing onon Ale this morning on waking, was Answer me Question by Yabby You.

Be interesting to get a keeper’s take but surely the logical approach would be too push the shot as wide and as far away from a comfortable shooting angle as possible?

Depending on speed and trajectory I imagine the difficulty in doing that would vary dramatically. Looks easy when you’re not the one with the gloves on. Not a job I ever fancied so I don’t judge them.

I give credit where it’s due and place criticism where it’s due. To blame him for both is extremely harsh. I don’t care if some people disagree with me, quite a few agree. It’s far too easy to blame a goalkeeper out of frustration.

There is an argument he could have been stronger on the first but the guy jumping with him is far bigger and got off the ground first. It’s one of those things. It should have been dealt with before that. The second one....I’m sorry but if you think you can catch that then you should be in goal for United. Please contact Wilder asap.
Still don't feel Henderson to blame for any goal and JOC minor miskick.
Sheer misfortune all round.
Not even Wilder's fault, it's a game against a decent side, away, top of the table.

I watched Wilder's post match reaction. I think he got it spot on. We can wallow in hurt and negativity, we're Blades, but the team have to move on quickly, very quickly. The "bits and bobs" in the dressing room hopefully helped to purge the team of that last mad 10-15mins, and then they can remember how the dominated the previous 80. Hendo took it on the chin after Leeds and moved on hopefully he can quickly before the Middlesbrough game, where we have Hogan available. I still have a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach but I'm not turning out on the pitch at BDTBL on Wednesday.

Just stopped reading at page 8. Wondering if I should write this as I have more than enough on my plate but fuck it, it's Sunday, I feel like shit because I miss Ms Crab so I'm afraid I'm going to unload here and now.

Firstly as far as I can see, he might be from the other lot but our visitor DH9 has given an opinion and been respectful, I'd pay him the same courtesy but that's just me.

Secondly, my recent issues have shown that there are great people on here, no question about that. But the scrapping and the insults, for Christs sake guys, over one result, really?

Lastly, nobody more than Wilder will be analysing those subs more than he will. He will have been wondering "what if". My own opinion, whilst I can see some logic with the subs, I feel it lost us some momentum and once Villa got a goal back, the momentum switched to them. I get the disappointment, I do. We let a three goal lead slip away to a decent team. But honestly, before the game I'd have taken a point even if during the game I was convinced we'd get three. Such is life.

So, put it behind us and for fucks sake, have a better Sunday than I'm having.

Chin up,sir

How exactly is Chris Wilder to blame for 3 individual errors leading to goals?
Without any substitutions Villa wouldn't have been in a position to put any of those crosses/shots in - they were never in the game. Wilder wanted Billy to milk the applause for his hat-trick. Wilder thought he didn't need Duffy and could simply save him for Wednesday night. He brought Cranie on tighten up a defence that didn't need tightening up. He left Washington up the top hoping he'd run down a clock that didn't need running down. He completely changed the shape of a team that was ship-shape and Bristol-fashion to perfection. Do you need any more answers?
Wilder is King for me, but his emotions and confidence got the better of him here, and he will know it and be kicking himself for it.

You're right. Cranie probably came on as he's going to need to take Basham's place for the next 2 games. So many managers also take off players who have "won" the game when so far ahead with little time to go, to allow them to receive their own round of applause. Hindsight eh.

The subs were perfectly normal. Look at the subs Guardiola made today when the game was won - Aguero off after 60-odd minutes, De Bruyne and Fernandinho off later. Surely Billy was subbed because he's 33, we play again on Wednesday and we had a three goal lead rather than milking any applause. Cranie on and Basham rather than Dowell in midfield didn't significantly change the shape (we were already playing with more of a flat 3 in midfield) and should make us better defensively. If we can't see out a 3 goal lead without Dowell (or Duffy) on the pitch, then something is very, very wrong.

At the end of the day, if Hendo catches that corner, nobody is talking about subs or team shape.

Wilder subbed Billy on 86 minutes. I doubt very much at that point that Wilder thought "Billy's 33 years old now; I can't expect him to stay the course given there's at least 6 minutes or so left to play". He'd scored a hat-trick; Wilder wanted his captain to get the applause he richly deserved - MOM on Sky TV - at Villa Park - huge TV audience - sorry mate, but you're wrong.
PS - Given that there had been no stoppages, I can't imagine Wilder thinking the ref would add 5 minutes either!

There was 5 goals and 5 substitutions in the second half, these working out at 30 seconds a piece totals 5 minutes and that’s without us running the clock down on a number of occasions, I was expecting 6 or 7 minutes and a loss by this time. :)

Big difference, Aguero, Fernandinho and De Bruyne were replaced with world class players,

Having said that, a non league club way below Conference level given a three goal lead against a team dead on it's feet and told to do nothing more than hold on for 8 minutes would have done so on 999,999 out of a million occasions.

There are only a certain few clubs that that could have happened to, and ours is one of them. Another one is Hartlepool, as you can often see from Geoff Stelling's antics on the telly.

I remember him once having a full on meltdown in the studio that was so bad I was sure he'd get fired, he was screaming exactly what he thought of the players right into the TV screen, he went absolutely crackers. Hartlepool were 2-0 in injury time and lost 3-2 with goals in the 91st, 93rd and 96th minute

The 91st minute goal went in, and a wry smile, he knew what was coming
93rd minute goal went in and he was in near apoplexy
96th minute goal and he just exploded

The point I was making was that on 86 minutes when Wilder subbed Billy, it's not likely that he imagined there'd be 5 minutes added time; that's why I made the comment that he was looking at another 6 minutes or so for Billy to have to play on, and it wasn't a case of him worrying his skipper had/would run out of steam.

Ok, fair enough, I still think it would’ve been naive of Wilder or anyone to think there’d only be a couple of minutes injury time after the events of the second half regardless of the point you rightly make. It’s all irrelevant now anyhow.

He is to blame for...

Giving us a really exciting playing style.

Taking a team to Villa and basically wiping floor with them.

Giving us best entertainment for 40 years.

Giving us great value for money.

Giving us a team that the the whole country is raving about.

Yeah he's a lot to blame for the idiot...
