If players are put under pressure mistakes will happen
Our goalkeeper and defenders get a fairly simple life really
They can run amok in the attacking third and have great protection by virtue of us being on the front foot and in control of most games.
But when they are called upon to do their defensive duties they are usually found wanting
This makes our substitutions even more baffling
Substitutions are fine, but changing things tactically when there's nothing wrong in the first place is just plain daft
Especially as our defence when called upon to actually defend can't do it

If we are in the blame game here’s one for yer. If McGoldrick had squared to either Billy or George for a tap in goal instead of shooting from a stupid angle we would have gone 4 0 up.

Ignoring the usual over exaggeration and “I told you so” element the substitution comment is bang on. Clearly the shape changed so it’s not unreasonable to assume it was purely tactical. That didn’t work and allowed Villa to come back from the dead.
Therefore it seems obvious that Wilder should take responsibility.
Henderson hasn’t suddenly become a bad keeper, nor Wilder a poor manager, despite the drama queens on here.

I would have put McGoldrick on. Wouldn't have brought Crainie on, but that isn't why we drew.
Individual errors and a collective panic cost us. I don't think that's Wilder's fault.
One final point: I may be wrong, but I think that's the fourth time in my life that we've lost a 3 goal lead. Twice (Ipswich 2003 and Brighton 1989) we came back to win. Which makes the last time we went 3-0 up and didn't win Reading in 1986-7, when they scored 3 times in 5 minutes just after the hour. It's a once in a generation thing (hopefully). It's a fluke, aided by individual errors from good players. It was awful, and I feel awful about it and feel awful for Billy, but we can come back from it.

Must be the 4th or 5th time CW has brought on a 4th defender to see out a game this season. Every time it has seen us defend deeper, which invites opposition forward. Me & my mate have been predicting this type of shambles each time but previously it's never happened like last night. Just doesn't make sense, especially when cruising in a game.
If you're gonna blame Wilder for the three goals conceded, shouldn't you also be praising him for the 3 goals we scored and the dominant performance against Villa away? Or was that just down to player brilliance and nothing to do with tactics or team selection?

I needed to sleep on it to get over mine! In the cold light of day i've come to this conclusion: Yeah Wilder's subs were bizarre but he's got past form. Yeah the players capitulated on a scale similar to the 1st 15 mins of the Wolves P/O final and last 10 mins of the pigs derby in the Ched year. But for me what did it last night was the absence of a leader on the pitch when it started going tits up. Deano, Bash, Egan and JOC are OK but leaders they're not. Where was the nasty fucker screaming at them and jabbing a finger in their faces. What we had instead were our back line and GK looking at each other with rolled eyebrows and shrugged shoulders. We need another Morgan, there would have been blood spilt in the dressing room last night if he'd been around and witnessed that.

Absolutely, he got his tactics spot on, that's why changing it so we were just aimlessly lumping it straight back to Villa and never found the strikers was madness.
It started to go wrong while he still had a sub left, and they had the free kick that led to the 2nd. Instead of putting Washington on he could have stuck Duffy on for Sharp so we had an out ball in midfield, or left Sharp on and brought Duffy on for Basham and returned to the original shape. Either way taking Sharp off before that freekick happened was stupid and just invited Villa to go for the equaliser with nothing to worry about going the other way.
Also find it funny that everyone is saying McGoldrick should have squared that shot he had to Sharp, when Sharp already falling over before McGoldrick opted for the shot.
End of the day, if JOC's foot would have made better contact with that clearance, everyone would be singing Wilder's praises for engineering an amazing win

I totally see your point and it really annoyed me when he was greedy (particularly when you consider Sharp’s pass for his goal last week).
That said you couldn’t have scripted the three errors for their goals better if you had tried.
Wilder’s subs are easy to blame. Yes, we lost shape, but that in itself was not responsible for losing a 3 goal lead.
The individual mistakes are the biggest factor IMO. If we had only been 1 or two up, the other issues would have held more weight.
Fuck off with the bigger Blade shit. Anyone who abuses ,slags off ,criticises the team I love is fair game for a response and you never fucking stop. Really don't understand why you follow us ,calling Henderson a prick is typical of you.

I might blame Wilder if we'd only been a goal up. Maybe if we'd been two up. No idea how he's responsible for that group of players being unable to hold onto a three goal lead.
I really think we'd be better off bringing on Coutts or Duffy and holding the ball rather than a defender but, fuck me, that was dire from the players making errors to concede three when the game should have been over.

We all support the Blades, some of us just get pissed off seeing their team throw a 3-0 lead away and call the mistakes out as they see them. If you don't like seeing players get called on their mistakes then I suggest you shouldn't be reading a football forum.

Wilder's got to take his share of the blame for that last night, it's back fired too many times taking forwards off for defenders to see the game out. He's got to realise that tactic aint working. He should defo have kept Madine and Sharp on, first line of defence forwards and they'd been superb all night on the defensive side (Sharp and Madine that is). Could see it late on the number of times the ball came straight back, when it would have stuck with Madine and Sharp. Madine would have been a big plus defending the set plays for their first two goals too.
Can't believe Hendo is getting so much blame for the goals either. The first goal someone has switched off because there was no defender on him for a free header, the second one again someone else wasn't marking because their bloke on the back stick got a free header in to start with then it went back to him again with no one on him. I've said it before we lack a proper leader at the heart of that defence (ie someone like Morgan), someone who actually opens their gob and gets his defence sorted so we aren't conceding soft goals.

You were slagging us off at 0-0 ,1-0 and even 3-0 nothing to do with throwing away a lead ,its like you cant help yourself or not able to acknowledge it or don't even realise you are doing it. Cant get my head round why you follow us ,you cant enjoy it.

The players and management are professionals and they will talk it through and come back strong.
To me CW did not need to make those changes but lets face it he should be able to rely on who he puts on and it was more down to players who were already on who are normally reliable.
Was that JOCs first mistake since Leeds at home last season. If so surly he can be forgiven? Tge consistency in between has been phenomenal.
I want a "Cocky" keeper. If he's not up to it CW will be the first to tell him.

I give credit where it’s due and place criticism where it’s due. To blame him for both is extremely harsh. I don’t care if some people disagree with me, quite a few agree. It’s far too easy to blame a goalkeeper out of frustration.
There is an argument he could have been stronger on the first but the guy jumping with him is far bigger and got off the ground first. It’s one of those things. It should have been dealt with before that. The second one....I’m sorry but if you think you can catch that then you should be in goal for United. Please contact Wilder asap.

Question for any keepers out there, someone posted last night - re the second goal - that keepers shouldn't parry or push a shot they can't hold wide, but centrally. Is that correct?

All depends how it is coming at you, from what distance, speed, visibility etc. You try and parry a shot wide when it is coming centrally from 2 foot at 90 mph!

It was suggested the way to deal with that was to parry it centrally i.e. forwards.
