Heavily backed in the JTW when in the promotion places but doesn't get us promoted, Oxford,Plymoth Millwall matches towards the end of the season, 3 points from a possible 18 from Leeds,Burnley and Sunderland boring insipid football( good cure for insomnia thou) when in a strong position at Wembley, taking a striker off and replacing with a midfield player inviting Sunderland to come on to us, enabling them to defend 30 yards up the pitch and leaving us with no pace up front. His embarrassing behavior at Plymouth in particular, his embarrassing rant after the win at the Sty, his refusal to play Holding instead of Robinson.

It is about the here and now and not about what his achieved six years or so ago.

I think the owners made the right decision with Wilder....with Selles,only time will tell.
 
Wilder was effective at getting results in the Championship but his negative tactics, strange team selections and rants were getting more bizarre as time went on. I was a big CW fan but after the second half capitulation at Wembley (following on from the last 10 games in the league campaign where we bottled it), where we had them on the ropes and then we came out again and looked a completely different team from the break, meant that I could see merit in going in a different direction as a club.

I actually like Selles and provided he is wise enough to see where he has gone wrong and he can change things quickly to adjust, then he should do well. Example, he was asked this week about whether he has the right players in place atm to play his ideal tactics and he basically said no, and that he will have to reassess. That was good to hear as I want him to learn from mistakes made and change things to make it better. Otherwise you get the Russell Martin syndrome (or David Weir) where they are tunnel visioned and see only what they want it to be like and not the reality.

Wilder has had his shot (and done well for us) but just like evolution and the dinosaurs, time moves on and his United managerial career is now extinct. Selles is the here and now and I hope for all our sakes he does really well and is backed by the board... both in the future and importantly, right now.
 
So wilder rebuilt a failed side, integrated youth, got a shape and style of play, just missed out on promotion. But the board wanted to go in a different direction! If what we heard was true the board was split on the decision to sack him then maybe what’s happening at the moment behind the scenes is is a resurfacing of that discussion. Not saying wilder back but if I was a director I’d be challenging the board re the decision, why the hell did we sack him and bring in someone with no playing experience and absolutely no record of success. Can blame the predicament of the clubs he’s managed but still no experience of promotion or building a successful side. Appreciate Sellas hasn’t been able to bring enough new players in however it seems clear to me that the players are all over the place. The shots on target and touches in the bham box to me say it all. There no evidence sellas has the wherewithal experience or track record to deliver a promotion winning side.
Maybe the biggest question for the board is do you back sellas or recognise your mistake and sack him instead

Blaming Chris Wilder for us dropping out of the promotion places, when there's was absolutely no way we should have ever been there in the first place with that squad and the amount of injuries, is just daft. It was a miracle he'd managed to get us there. I'm not sure there is another manager in the country who could have done that and it's somehow ended up costing bim his job? If that's the case, he'd have been better off having us way behind in a play off place in January, and sticking with that pace for the rest of the season. If the board sacked him for that then it's really not a good look in my eyes.

He was sacked because he failed. Promotion in our grasp. He failed. Playing style. He failed. Unprofessional, 'look at me and how great I am' rant, after the Hillsborough derby. Failure. Embarrassing video's in a boozer, being a fan, amongst his fan club with their cameras on filming him. Utterly naïve and failed.

CW1 was amazing. CW2 wasn't. He took his eye of the ball and did his own legs, as did those closest to him. Someone should have had a word and maybe, just maybe he might still be there.

He's gone. We move on. So should he.

Unprofessional 😒 who cares? Being a fan, being amongst the supporters? Fail? Wow, I bet you hated Billy Sharp as well. Fingers crossed Arblaster doesn't establish himself as well eh?

Wilder ruined his own career by not taking it seriously and given most of our squad couldn’t get past 70mins it seems like he never learnt his lesson.

I don’t want a boorish lout for a manager, I want someone committed to doing the best he can.

He was top of the league with 7 games to go and one of the easiest run ins of all the teams at the top or the league, his record against the top teams speaks for itself, and he had the third biggest budget in the league, getting everything he asked for in Jan.

It can’t be anything else but a failure.

His first stint was about the club, his return was all about him.

Great post. 100% agree, especially the part around Selles admitting he needs to adapt. I’ve also heard him take his share of the blame for the first couple of games. Wilder would blame sandwiches before himself…
 
As someone who's nearly thirty, Chris Wilder gave me the best seasons I've ever seen at United so I understand all the pro Wilder posts, but I don't think people realize that outside of the United bubble Wilder is seen as a joke. The rants, the sandwich talk, failure at other clubs since United. I absolutely love the man for what he did, but he's no longer the man he was and I hope I'm wrong but it could be a long time before we see him in the championship again.

I think outside of our bubble people are less hysterical over him. Look at the video after the win at Hillsborough. Every neutral account saying how brilliant it was and how good it must be to have that as your manager. It'll never happen again so the pearl clutchers win, football simply won't have any characters like that soon and they can all be happy how professional it is.

It's mainly just petty personal dislike from our fans that mean he is slagged off to a ridiculous degree.

Outside the 'bubble' almost every footy fan Ive spoke to are thinking what the fuck have Sheff Utd done.
