Wilder Bottled It

No reason why we couldn't have treated this game as a free hit but Wilder shits himself beyond belief, gets the line up badly wrong, gets the subs badly wrong, gets the whole approach badly wrong

We lost without ever even having a go, without showing a fraction of what we're capable of. We simply surrendered. And to a completely unremarkable Leeds team. The previous 2 we've beaten at Elland Rd were better than that. It was even a good time to play them. Yet Wilder seemed to think they were Man City

He also chose to make the game as easy as possible for Bogle, a well known defensive weak link

Taking our only matchwinner Hamer off when to that (early) point we'd only been defending was especially staggering. I don't know where he thought we'd get a goal from after those changes. Campbell?

What a pathetic showing, what an absolute waste

It's all on Wilder and what has become his natural fearful approach away to any opponent who aren't complete dogshit

To go into that match with the best record in the division and set up like we’re a relegation team was massively disappointing.

A defeat tonight was always going to be fucking shit! But it’s even worse when we waved the white flag from kick off!
But our centre half's have far more pass completions than any other side in the country. It's not even close!!!

"I'm absolutely livid at that. Wilder completely bottled it and picked a team not to lose.
When we went one down we were so far out of the game to ever have a chance of getting back in it"

That was the message I sent to my son whilst walking home last night.

I don't usually get uptight about football but I still feel much the same this morning although the anger has gone.

Not bedwetting to expect a fighting chance in every game.
Don't expect to win all games but do expect a sensible lineup and perhaps one shot on target in 90mins.
Did we not have a fighting chance? Went in 0-0 at HT, had a spell on the hour mark where we were on top and had a few shots. Went one down from a corner and then got caught on the break at the death.

No we didn't have a fighting chance.
Not one shot on target.
Set up to fail and stats prove it.
Trying to draw 0-0 is cowardly.
It hardly ever pays off.
What happened to "do it for George" ?

I'm no wilder hater I'm very much on the fence and think he deserves immense praise for everything he's done this season up until he picked that team last night

It really worries me that his mindset in difficult away games is that this team is not good enough so I'm going to revert to old school David v gokiath tactics that simply do not work anymore

I'm afraid farke made wilder look like a Dinosaur once he adjusted his tactics and stopped us going through the middle

Spent an entire season watching us get halfway into. The opponents half and then turn back round look for a safe pass before playing it between the back line for 5 minutes and rinse and repeat until the opposition score

I'd love to the see the stats for how many forward passes we made I bet they are far outnumbered by the amount of back ward ones

That's what I mean by undoing all his good work

He had exorcised the demons of that 5-3-2 and how easily nullified it was and finally started playing some modern progressive football and it was building into something but now he's reset it

The confidence the players had built has been decimated and you could see they weren't comfortable being asked to make Leeds look like real Madrid by conceding possession and defending like rourkes drift

It just doesn't work and it really pisses me off that this is his default setting especially in such a tumultuous week for the club and the fans

Just hope it's the last time but as we all know with Chris learning from his mistakes isn't his strong point and if after an entire season of failing at it why decide to do it again last night ?

Did Wilder say "do it for George"? I hope not.

When we put Basham in midfield against Leeds and won, everyone was complaining about it being negative and cowardly before kick off as well. Just like everyone complains when the system or lineup changes and are eventually right every now and again.

Painful to listen to people then assuming they're tactical geniuses that knew better than the manager and coaching staff despite having done no prep whatsoever.

Agree with the consensus. We setup like a team who were scared of Leeds…fucking Leeds. The same side who drew 3-3 at home to Portsmouth this season. I don’t think anyone would be that bothered about a loss if we actually went there to win. Watching that defensive shit reminded me of last season, way too much respect given to the opposition and they’re not even worthy of it! Please stop the negative shit, it’s awful to watch.

I would be curious to know how the other coaches (Knill, Lester) felt about going back to a 3-5=2 formation: did they agree or disagree?

If they agreed, then this option will never go away.

If they disagreed, then this tactical change sits squarely on CW's shoulders and should be kicked to the curb.

Was this an override decision or a concensus. To add insult to injury, going back to 3-5-2 came directly after the Internation break, a terrible time to change tactics.

Wonder what tactical.
Master class he's got lined up. For the derby ?

He said in the post match interview that the coaching staff decided it was the best way to go after watching Leeds play Southampton video in the play off final

It's all be said although I don't think he bottled it , just got it wrong .
I'm always bemused when managers pick a team and formation absolutely none of us would have . I realise they have knowledge of how players have trained ,fitness levels etc which we don't.
Often it's just trying to be too clever by half as England found out recently.
If it comes off it's a master stroke , when it doesn't it looks awful.
Back to plan A I think .

100% mate. I thought that defensive first half was part of a plan which involved hitting them hard in the 2nd half. I was wrong, he wanted us to just sit back and spawn a draw....against Leeds...fucking Leeds. They're fuck all, no different to the Bielsa run around a lot drones.

It Southampton didn't play 5-3-bastarding - 2 and take out all the pace, counter attacking threat and ability to pass the ball forwards out of the team

The next time i see he has picked that formation I'm turning round and going home or it's a media black out

Can't stand to watch that meek embarrassing surrender ever again.

Leeds fan I work discussed with me this morning & was fair when he said he was equally confused by our approach. He described it as watching a lower league team who had come to play for extra time/ replay. He expected more threats from us as he was worried that we would want to test Meslier after his gaff in the last minute at Sunderland…. also surprised we are not starting Rak-Sakai…

Hard to argue against any of that. I just we have a better approach but he time we play them at home.

They're comfortably worse than Bielsa's team

I'd be 1000% okay with this result if Wilder came Infront of camera and said "oh yeah, I fucked that right up"

I'm not worried but the message that performance have to the championship was horrifying.

Players poor performances won't have been helped by the change in formation forced upon them or the fact their more attacking colleagues are sat on the bench.

He didn't 'bottle it' he just got it wrong, it happens. We were always going to lose eventually and it was always likely going to be this game. Slight overreaction from some fans I think. We were not going to go the whole season without losing.

I'm dreading the steel city derby now. If we have any chance of beating the pigs, we'll change the system again. Wilder will treat the Massive team with respect and probably drop soutar and anel to the bench.

They'd have been better off watching Leeds play Portsmouth with this season's team.

Basing it on last years play off final is not only amateur but also totally ridiculous.

Don't worry, we'll just play out a thrilling mutually agreeable 0-0 yet again

This is either
a) a complete over reaction or
b) complete bollocks .

You choose.
