We've had decades of short-termism which has left us in this state. We've invested in the Academy, had some good results and luck but never really capitalised on it. When Southampton had this fortune they had a solid plan and it worked.

Wilder is stuck really. The sale of Brooks plus sell ons to other Academy products got us up. However, there's been no building in terms of bringing players through so we have kids which look well off and also no money to invest in the future.

This is a general consequence of lack of investment but also our myopic approach to recruiting British/British experience. You simply can't bring young British players in cheaply, as a rule and we need players who can perform now.

Our rapid rise means our youth players are vastly unlikely go be able to step up.

Without real investment and long-term planning I fear we'll end up back where we started, sooner rather than later.

I'm afraid I don't pay much attention to football outside my SUFC & England National Team bubble. I often see comments about the need for a foreign scouting network to bring young foreign lads into the Academy & develop them for the first team. I know many teams buy in foreign stars - fully formed for their first team. But, can someone give me examples of foreign players who have been brought into an English Academy when young & then developed into first team stars....

Thanks. I'll go back to my original post. I've heard of Pogba. But none of the others. It's obvious now I shouldn't be on this thread. But Hey Ho. I'm now "more informed". And, yes, as you say, I watched two SUFC Development XIs at the weekend with foreign youngsters playing for us.

Personally, I think we should be concentrating on what has worked for us in the past - picking up youth players released by other clubs.
