Gary Caldwell and David Sharpe.

Not confident are they?

Sharpe: "I don't just want to win this league. I want to smash it and get 100 points."

Sharpe:"We have a good budget - five times more than anyone in L1. We have bids in for three strikers and they're not cheap"

Caldwell: "We'll be the big team in League One next season and I'm proud of that"

Caldwell: "When I get the key players in I believe we'll have a side you will be proud of that will be champions in May"

I don't mind a little confidence, but what a total lack of respect for the rest of League 1

Nothing would please me more after reading that drivel from a manager and chairman, to shove it right up em

I agree, but nothing can hide the fact that they are a club in decline and their town will resume their love of egg-chasing.

Hi Blade 58. I Believe that there already is a thread about shoving it right up 'emi

It has been rumoured that in the woods close to Wigan grow some of the most potent mushrooms this side of Hogwarts. This kind of brazen claptrap will only benefit Wigan's opponents, who'll thrive on each word uttered by the clueless twosome. There's an obvious hangover from their time in the Premiership, and slipping down the divisions will act like the type of suppository that freefalling teams need to make them wake up to the realities of life amongst the peasants.

Who are they trying to convince , us or themselves . Over confidence in public creates a problem of - Heading for a fall .

UTB

Because of parachute payments, Wigan's turnover will most likely be double ours. So if you stick to the 60% SCMP rule, they could have a player wage bill of about £10M - £12M. This is probably why they are courting Done.

They also have another £9M parachute payments next season, so they can afford to push the boat out.

Wolves recruited very sensibly when they came down, let's hope they fuck it up or at least we get our act together.

We're clearly a bigger club than they'll ever be. Sincerely hope we stuff them now.

Ah it's all talk. So what. These clubs who bought their way into the big time generally gravitate back to where they belong. Wigan will be League One in 3 years time when the money runs out. Fulham are dropping like a stone, Rotherham will be back in League One soon enough. Blackburn are batting where they belong in spite of Jacks millions buying a league title. Money makes little difference unless it's Man City or Chelsea type money.

hahaha. Joke of a club. I hope we smash them on our way out of this shithole league.

Hmmm yes, we're bigger. But they've got pots of cash, and despite being in disarray, several players that are far better than ours to start with. Unless their manager shows the ineptitude of a weir or Adams, we'll probably be chasing them. A car crash of a season akin to our relegation sees them in this lague, but they really shouldn't be here.

Don't underestimate them just because they're unfashionable. . . Not that we could ever claim to be btw. (Fashionable that is)

They might be surprised at what they find. Most of the division is dreadful, buy since we've been in it there have been 4 or 5 sides a year who have been a cut above. Wouldn't it be great if the cnuts finished 7th ?

The difference is that teams like Wolves (and us) can be confident of future revenue if/when we go up. Wigan have had their fun and well done to them (in a MKD-esque way - pitiful crowds, no history or tradition and obviously being bankrolled 'on the quiet'). But they are now reverting back to the natural order of things.

They are probably right
this division is shit ,last years was especially poor .if they sign a couple of decent players and their current crop are motivated enough to try against teams our lot couldnt be arsed to ,then they probably will walk it

The big team in L1?? Is Caldwell on drugs? We got bigger crowds in L1 than they got in the Prem

They've won the FA cup and been in Europe. Just like Pompey they're guaranteed an immediate exit from league 1 on this basis

Money talks. This bigger club bollocks is exactly that. If you've got the right backing it doesn't matter if you have 25k through the gates or 8k. Football has changed, even since when we were in the Championship.

Wigan have the squad and resources to demolish this league. If the interest in Done is genuine then I'd be worried. They could probably double his wages.

They'll look to buy the best players off their rivals ala Wolves and McDonald.

I'm surprised you think that Wolves would sell them McDonald.

Why do you consider Wolves to be their rivals?

Obviously not local rivals, but could it be alphabetical as both begin with a 'W'?

I think he meant wolves signed the best players from there rivals when they dropped down into league one.

I see it was a fans forum where these comments where made, maybe just showing the confidence he has in their squad.

Let's see how confident they are a couple of months in. It's a horrible league to get out of and they will find it tougher than they realise. There's a reason they were awful in the Championship.

I'm even more confused now. Who are these 'there rivals'?

I'm pretty sure I'm on the right lines with the 'W' thing and confidently expect Wigan to be raiding the Baggies, Walsall, Worksop Town and Wycombe for their best players.
