I hope the Chairman of Prem clubs see it as you do, for our sake.
Wilder IS tried and tested. Above and beyond most managers in the football league. He's one of a very few to actually start right at the bottom, with grass roots football, and work his way up into the professional leagues and show constant progression, even in extremely difficult circumstances.
Now, if you're a Prem League Chairman looking for someone who's won a title or a Cup with a bigger club, in some foreign land maybe, then Wilder's not your man, I totally agree. But do you not think that Chairmen in the Prem will now be looking at the likes of Wilder and thinking.."Hmm! that lad's got something about him. Has got teams promoted wherever he's been - consistently over the last decade - gets his teams playing good football - and has shown he can do it on a shoestring". I think they most definitely will.
I think the likes of your Man City's and Arsenal's and Chelsea's will always want to go for the big international name. But there's a lot of other Prem clubs - the majority actually - who would view Wilder as a real asset. He's take a team languishing in League 1 for 6 years, got them promoted at the first attempt (and by some margin - 100 points) and then taken them close to the play offs in his first season and currently in the top 3 this season - on a shoestring. I think that, plus what he's achieved elsewhere before - is plenty of evidence to force someone to open a cheque book and take a gamble on him.
I think he'll end up at a middlin Prem club soon. I hope it's us!
All fair points and of course you could be correct.
However taking a risk on management talent in the lower divisions rarely happens anymore.
Let’s assume Wilder leaves us and we appoint the Lincoln or Forest Green Rovers managers.
Do you think our fans will be doing cart wheels? Doubt it,
We’d say that the Cowley Brothers and Mark Cooper might be brilliant in league 2 but what relevance is that to the Championship.
Let’s not forget Wilder has no experience of managing foreign players, no experience of managing big egos.
No experience of having money, no experience of being a coach (hes always been the manager in charge of everything).
He’s hardly any experience in the top 2 divisions, no experience of massive pressure and massive media attention.
In fact although Wilders CV is fantastic in the lower divisions and non league, his experience has little relevance to the Premier league.
It might sound silly but “sexiness” is now the fashion at the top level.
Hence an owner will go for a big name (Gerrard or Lampard) or a foreign coach with an exotic sounding name.
It’s hardly going to excite any fans if their club was to appoint this straight talking abrasive Chris Wilder with the Yorkshire accent.
It would be “Chris who, which team did he play for? Never heard of him”.
