A lot of teams do it, but McAtee is much better on the left. He doesn't seem to have a trick to go past a man on the right, he takes a huge arc when he cuts back inside, slowing down any move. He got a great strike against Brentford, but we know from last season he is just as if not more effective striking across goal and he is a great crosser from the left. I know Archer has a great strike cutting inside, but at least I would like to see them switching occasionally during a game, I think we would get so much more out of McAtee and we would break much quicker

Why is McAttee playing on the right when he has no right foot and Archer playing on the left when he has no left foot?
Lol, robben is the best example out there... he's the most 1 footed player ever (left) and he was always played on the right to cut in on his left and one of the best players to play this role what fifty shades said inverted winger.

So many people don't understand the phrase " the exception that proves the rule"

As many have answered the benefits of putting these two on opposed wings, the main reason that this works is because it brings the opposition fullbacks onto their wrong foot, increasing the chance of them committing to a mistake with their weaker foot.

We’ve tried this in a number of games - Wolves when McAtee came on, having been pretty ineffective in games prior to that, Hecky put in a floating role but found himself down the right where he caused them problems. Wilder has followed this and played them this way since he came in.

The other benefit is that it allows us to still have wingbacks or fullbacks getting forward and overlapping. In the first half today this happened a few times, McAtee coming inside to get onto his left, but more importantly, it allowed Bogle to get forward in space as the fullback went with McAtee and allowed Bogle to put that killer ball across the 6 yard box… the problem was that not a single player from McB, Archer, Souza, Hamer or Lowe bothered to gamble for a certain tap in…

Second half this method failed as -
  • McBurnie didn’t hold the ball up
  • we lost central mid to Gallagher
  • full backs didn’t get forward enough
  • we weren’t fit enough

Plenty of teams do it. It's called inverted wingers. Imo tho all pro's should be able to use both feet, it should be something that they work on from a lad and onwards
Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery at Bayern are prime examples of it. Worked okay for them as I recall.

Yeah so everyone should play their left footed full back on the right to counter this and vice versa. And whilst we are at it maybe we should try playing a centre half at centre forward as they couldn't be any worse than McBurnie is!

very dissapointed with mcatee today couldnt control the ball couldnt go past a player palmer looked 3 times better than him today

It’ll work in some games as it ties up fullbacks to allow our fullbacks to get forward. It was fairly effective in the first half today and it was a good counter attack option as we lacked pace though the middle

Second half, Chelsea countered it and we should’ve probably changed our set up. We needed our back 4 solid, whilst not having the players on the pitch defensively, we needed to be tighter before Chelsea scored as we looked full of holes at the back. Osula and Archer up top, McAtee in a central role in behind them until he’d burnt his matches.

Accept McA scored a worldwide last time out and early season Archer had some great efforts cutting in.
I'd still prefer to see us switch it round in games. Archer's missed a few either not shooting or shooting terribly on his left peg. The Osula tap in went out because McAttee couldn't use his right to keep it in...

This kind of post is why people question the intelligence of football fans.

Was the last time you watched a football game 1994? 90% of 'wingers' are now inverted and have been for almost 20 years.
