Based on what i have seen this season whoever we sign will not make a difference we have too many mediocre players who just are not good enough to get promoted, the main thing is getting rid of the shite and we are doing so with good pace.

Adkins will be here next season whatever happens and most of our squad will be released (hopefully) and he can build a real promotion side. (again hopefully)

Yes we have let those around us strengthen especially Wigan, but i would rather us wait until the summer rather than trying to shoehorn in a player to fit the squad we are stuck with until the summer.

UTB!

I completely understand that but 1 signing and we could trouble the play off places, 2 signings and I'd fancy us to get in the top 6, 3 signings(good ones) and I think we could finally win at wembley!?
Then we could have a clear out.

There might be someone useful in the loan window. We might need to wait until 4 March.

Adkins needs to be getting 1.8 points per game out of the squad in February.

Shipping the shite out is important but I'm still not ruling out us scraping into 6th position.

I would agree with the OP, except this has been exactly what has been said at the back end of each transfer window since transfer windows began.

We're always going to clear out the dead wood and bring in some quality when the window opens up again. Eventually it has to be done instead of being a vague ambition for the future.

We will see the same lack of ambition in the summer. Our Board - and McCabe in particular - are a f'kin disgrace.

They have taken it too far this time and I expect a big drop in ST sales.

You say that.......based on what?

At the beginning of each season we've always done something to spark interest
And we've always been made favourites to win the league by bookies and most neutrals.

Hence why season tickets have remained high and why average gates have been close to 20,000.
Some Blades always predict doom and gloom and gates down to 15,000 and every year they are wrong.

If we get promoted to the Championship the same people will still be predicting doom and gloom
Because we've got no chance in the Championship. The same predictions get boring.
How about waiting and see what happens.

Agree that if the board stop investing then gates could decrease significantly.

I think you will find that this season they have stopped investing.
Lowest nett spend for a number of years

Yet we could have had Sam Morsy for £250k

Shameful

Exactly! And the drop is sales will be used as an excuse as to why we have to extend deals to the likes of Mceverly and co (which we will)

It will all be our fault.

Complete and utter bollox. Don't expect much different in the summer either whilst this family are still at the club. Get ready for the extensions of Collins and Captain Useless, as well as others, because it will be cheaper than trying to rebuild.

I'd love to think that we will see a big clear out and decent players coming in pre-season but I just can't. Adkins wanted players this season. He said time and time again that staying in touch till January was important. Let's not now try and make out like this was some masterplan to ship out as many as possible and bring no one in.

Something has quite clearly happened in the board room. Back in September we had Phipps tweeting saying we would be spending the Murphy money and that our bids for players had just not managed to happen. Somehow a few months later we desperately needed to get rid of anyone who wasn't in the first eleven as quick as possible before we could buy. Whilst I agree the squad was too large, there was no talk from the top about needing to get rid of players up until a few months back when all we started hearing was how much of a big squad we had. What changed?

I am not saying anyone with any optimism is an idiot and is just wishful thinking but I have no idea how anyone can be so convinced that we are heading in the right direction simply because we have lost some players a bit shitter than the ones hoping to get us into the Championship.

Option 1: Strengthen in summer, bringing in 7/8 players in one go
Option 2: Bed a couple in now, causing less disruption next season.

Bed a couple into a losing mentality so they can help bed the next few in the summer to the same mentality? No thanks Jeff, we've done that for years
Option 1 for me, mass haul out now and in the summer get the mentally right with a full set of fresh faces.

And when half the first team is comprised of new faces and they don't gel, and we start the season off poorly, and when the fans start booing, and when the fans start calling for the manager's head?

do have a good point there like what happened after Clough's summer spending disaster.

New faces? I think that you will be disappointed come September 2016, just like me my friend.

Yep, I can't help but feel a bit disappointed that we haven't strengthened, but I'm so glad we haven't just bought in 3 or 4 more mediocre players, Clough style, to keep the masses happy. The current clearout is a symptom of that failed policy, in place for almost a decade.

Barring a miracle it's a summer rebuild for next season. Hard to take in some ways, but we have got to stop repeating the same mistakes.

Next seasons midfield will be Hammond, Coutts, Woolford and Basham.

Hammond will be signed and the rest are under contract.

Stay fit and don't leave Billy, or that's a recipe for league 2.

What a mess this club is in.

5 seasons to get it right and win promotion? WTF has happened here then. We're going round in circles while the board play hide & seek. These Transfer Windows are like the kid in the sweet shop window. We're just spectators to other clubs vying to bring in better players than before. We just stagnate from one window to another hoping our current squad of players find a magic formula.

Let's not kid ourselves here, the board have no ambition to make this work and gain promotion. Cloughie's exit proved that point as did Danny Wilson's departure. McCabe's view on player wages must be in line with the minimum wage. That's probably the main reason decent adequate players move to other less attractive clubs.

Bin some more dross, and some of the retained players could form part of a decent squad, If only as back up.

Of course, none if this might happen and then we are going nowhere. But I can still see a path where we clear out more shite and are yet much stronger come August.

It's almost unforgivable that we are in this position 5 years after relegation, but carrying on with the same policies of quantity over quality would be more so.

I see that path too, but since the summer of 2012 our transfer policy has, by and large, been run by morons.

McCabe has given up/has no money and heaven knows about the other guy. Meanwhile the managers dealings are at best uneven.

I would not retain a single out of contract player. Not one. Have a clean sweep. But there'll no doubt be the usual renewals for the likes of Flynn and we'll be back to square one.

McCabe has learnt nothing from his errors.

Improving your squad is an ongoing process, even Barcelona etc are always looking to improve if possible.
You identify the areas to improve and constantly look for players, that is never ending, wherever you are in whatever league, top of prem or bottom of league 2.
According to JP we can't find any players to improve us????
What a load of rubbish!
So in England there are no CH's better than Collins,no midfielders better than Woolford,no keepers better than Long and Howard we can either sign or loan???
It's a joke!

We can't find any players better, who are available and within budget (which is not a swear word). And given a finite budget, we are not looking at every position. If we were, we'd be carrying on the failed policy of signing more mediocre players in every position.

If I had a few million at my disposal, I'd be looking at 3 positions (the spine), and I'd be very picky about who I brought in.

I can see how that that position is constant with what's happening. It could also be that nothing will be available, and then we are going nowhere.

The op is spot on, but all we've heard from the board is how we must get promoted from this division this season, even Yankee Doodle said it last night in his statement (desperation) in his words to get out..

The fans have identified where we need to strengthen NOW and we've been ignored on the whole, it's a fuck em, they're like sheep attitude towards us, and were excusing it...

No fall out at board level?? Plenty of money available, so why not spend peanuts on Morsy then, or is it because Nigel hasn't managed him before? One thing Is he was clearly good enough for Wigan wasn't he..

we have no money and are running the club on transfer fees, sponsorship, and gate receipts...

I think we're skint.....

Haven't Barnsley signed a centre half from burnley? Wonder why we can't sign one.. In three Windows?.. Skint.. And lying to the fans..

The lack of a loan signing says everything really regarding the efforts to get promoted this season. If we sign someone during the loan window we'd have to wait until March so they could play in the play-offs. If we signed someone in January then we'd have them until the end of the season.

I'm disappointed we haven't brought anyone in but the JTW is no good imo. You pay over inflated prices for bang average players, yeah if we brought 2/3 players in we might have gone up but then your rebuilding a squad in a higher division and in all probability we would go down.

Let Adkins rebuild the squad in the summer to build a team that can go up and stay up comfortably and with a couple of additions the summer after look to push on again.

I see this as being a change in the way the club operates on transfers not signing someone because we feel we have to sign someone.
