are they really ?
context , went to Madrid last night to watch real
they hung on to win on aggregate despite losing 4-3 at home to Schalke who had chances to win late on on away goals , but Real got through, but , the crowd was not happy .
They are top of La lIGA , in the last 8 of the CL and it was just like being at the Lane
The moaning and wailing was unbelievable , Benzema and Bale got some vile abuse from those around me, and the central defenders were heralded off with donkey noises as they left the pitch
I was thinking our fans would be exactly the same if we had won 10 european cups 32 league titles and 18 cups , but lost a home game , the fans would go ape shit , sack the manager drop the useless midfielder , felt right at home -
Good post BTL, I watched the game on TV, and just as you described, the animosity from the crowd towards the players was tangible. Although an extremely talented player, Ronaldo at times does a very passable take as petulant saviour. Bale was a shadow of what I remember him to be, perhaps the weight of responsibility is affecting his ability to perform, and so on with most of their players, although it does seem that Isco was the best Real player on the night. It's all relative isn't it? The level of expectation is beyond immense for this club, but as a team they're not up their with best teams of the past, but I guess that won't matter to their fans........so your point about fans of SUFC, completely agree, we're miserable now, we blame because, well, isn't that what supporter's do? We seek miracle workers, we have memories with more holes than a colander, and once our hackles are risen, well there's no turning back from that point. Don't expect an ability to revise an opinion, let's just repeat the same limited mantras.
Let's face it, we're a Division 1 club for a reason. We've sparkled occasionally, they've been joyful moments we've all embraced, but there have been many more moments of disappointment. At those moments we've looked ordinary, nothing special, unable or unwilling to compete, I'm not sure which of those two is the case. I certainly think we've not addressed important positions early enough, or been prepared to pay what it'll take when we should have. I can't quite grasp why we were in for Chesterfield's Doyle during January, for a reported seven figure sum, while not being willing to seek out a player of similar value before the first whistle of the season? I know these are familiar questions, but it doesn't make them less valid, or not worth repeating again. But back to the fans, I doubt fans are much different the world over, it's just that when a mindset becomes identified with a club then the fans tend to follow whatever bullshit that enforces their own prejudice.
For myself, well I'm a disappointed clapper - silly term by the way, but I'll use it for those who see life through a simpleton's prism. We have supporters who can't seem to get erect without a game passing where we haven't performed well and thrashed the opposition. I don't expect that level of performance, but let's be honest, we should have collected at least a further 10-15 points this season if we were really the division favourites that the bookies informed us we were. I suppose we'll have to battle on, continue to select which fan's faction we're best suited to, and either dispense well reasoned arguments, or embrace the hysteria that seems to be an increasingly regular happening on this forum. The one consolation is that we're no different to many other clubs. We think, or at least some of appear to do so, that we have an entitlement to something.....I'm not in that group so I guess my aforementioned title of clapper is now an undeniable cap I'll be made to wear no matter what happens.....oh dear, oh dear.
