My spreadsheet comparing this year’s results with the equivalent games last season has provided some comfort regarding recent results (we’re still 10 points better off than last year) but has also highlighted that we struggle to beat ‘less good’ teams. I’ve removed QPR from the current 5-game run because they are doing ok this season and it can be seen that we’ve only taken 2 points from 8 games against poor teams this season and last.
Injuries and an unsettled defence are clearly an issue this season but the fact that we have only scored 6 goals in those 8 games is quite telling (and 3 of those were in 1 game). Is it just that we struggle to beat teams that play deep or is there something else to explain it?
