Anyone remember ? we only gave him one season and i think we finished about 10th in the old second division , that would be a good finish for us nowadays .

There was some funny business about a wife of one of the club employees I think.

So, to put in today’s terms he took out a super-injunction to cover up his affair with a well known WAG and erstwhile star of TV’s “The Golden Shot”.
Only our Board got wind of it when telegram rumours spread like wildfire around the Post Office queue.
They relieved him of his position to avoid a Broadsheet furore and his PR Agent arranged an undisclosed compensation payment.

Allegedly...?

we finished 9th that season. some at the club felt that Rowley's passion for horse racing affected his work as the manager (a player told my dad that during some 1st team matches Rowley would sit in the directors box listening to the racing results from his transitor radio) During the close season there was an ongoing dispute by the players about the bonus system and the matter was still not resolved during the pre season tour of Holland so Dick Wragg (chairman) and John Harris (general manager) made special arrangements to fly over to Holland for a meeting with the players to try and resolve the dispute. The meeting didnt sort out the problem and then Rowley stood up and told the players to get ready for a Pony Trekking meeting somewhere in Holland that evening. Wragg and Harris werent impressed with Rowley's manner so when the club went back home, there was a board meeting a few days later and then the board decided to sack Rowley a day or two before the first league match of the season (3-0 home win against Middlesbrough)
