[Sour Grapes...]

That's what people said after MK.

Gardos had to walk, Mane could have had two more yellows, Wanyama could have had two more yellows and Fonte should have gone for the disgusting lunge on McNulty. Second dirtiest side I've seen at the Lane this season after MK.

No sour grapes today. When will we ever see the glut of red cards the opposition usually deserve?

Just wondering if you went to the game? It didn't look that bad on TV.

Mane was playing with fire a bit, but the foul on McNulty was never a red card.

Anyway, who cares!!

I felt one their lads could have been sent off sooner.

Mane deservedly picked up his first yellow, then went in on Howard with the leg up, then fouled Reed for 'the' free kick.

Shiterlin fouled one of ours then two minutes later booted the ball away at a free kick. That's a yellow, isn't it?

Yamanamana deserved to go - he was all over Murphs down the left in the first half and legged someone up in the second.

They were a right bunch of mardy arses. Four straight defeats and getting shown the door by Sheffield United. Fucking hurts, dunnit?

There once was a windmill in old Amsterdam - a mouse with his Cloggs on must look like Koeman.

Yes I was at the game. Which foul on McNulty, the one that did get the red card or Fonte going straight through the back of him? The TV must have been kind on that one as it looked just about the worst challenge I've seen this season.

And the point is if you can't point out the overly aggressive and unsporting behaviour of your opponent when you lose because it's 'sour grapes', then maybe having fairly and deservedly dumped a Premier League team out of the cup people might take note.

I felt one their lads could have been sent off sooner.
When Clyne and Mane got booked in quick succession and the ref seemed to misplace his cards for a while I said they'd end up with ten, but Mane wouldn't go. Clearly subbed Mane and Wanyama before they got their marching orders!

Sorry - I wasn't clear - the Fonte foul on McNulty would have been a harsh red card - the actual red card was clear cut.

As for kicking the ball away - that in itself isn't a booking - it's time wasting that is a booking, and he obviously wasn't doing that as they were losing (presumably!).

Watching on TV, with all the replays and commentary, it really didn't come across that bad. I think Mane was probably one more foul from going but other than that it was fine.

While we're on the subject of sour grapes, here's chief whinger Ronald Koeman trying to justify acting like a twat.

BBC Sport said:
Ronald Koeman unhappy with Nigel Clough's 'lack of respect'
Southampton boss Ronald Koeman accused Sheffield United's management team of a lack of respect following Tuesday's 1-0 League Cup defeat at Bramall Lane.

Koeman exchanged angry words with Blades boss Nigel Clough and his staff after United's goal celebrations.

The Dutchman refused to shake hands after the game and said: "I shake hands with people who have respect for me and have respect for the fourth official.

"I think the behaviour of Sheffield United's bench, I never saw that."

The League One side's first-team coach Chris Morgan was sent to the stands following heated exchanges in the wake of striker Marc McNulty's winning goal in the 63rd minute.

A feisty encounter in Sheffield produced eight yellow cards and saw Southampton defender Florin Gardos sent off late on for a foul on McNulty.

Koeman, whose Premier League side have now suffered five successive defeats after a bright start to the season, was also unhappy with Clough and Morgan's treatment of fourth official Paul Tierney during the match.

Clough countered: "He's entitled to his opinion. I don't think one word should be said on it, we should be talking about how we have just beaten a Premier League side."

I agree. Mane was a little lucky not to see a second yellow for his foul on Reed on the edge of the box, more for persistent fouling then anything. His high foot on Howard wasn't in the same league as the Citeh kung fu kicks the other week, more protecting himself i think and he was helped by Howard who bounced straight up.

Agree too about Schneiderlin, if Soton had been winning 1-0 he would have been off.

And too be controversial, i thought the red was a little harsh too! Ball was bouncing very high and McNutts would have it all to do just to get a shot off.

Can't recall the Fonte challenge.

Fouling is a big part of the game. It's an art and the good teams no when to draw the line. Soton were getting close, but i don't think they went over it...apart from the red at the end obviously!

I thought the referee gave us the rub of the green. Especially the first half.

We made 3 dreadful challenges early on which would've been bookings in a league game.
Their first foul ended up a yellow, think they would be forgiven for thinking he had it in for them with that.

I'm not saying he was biased towards us but it almost looked like two brothers being naughty. Us being the younger and getting away with it, then when the older brother did the same it was almost a "you're a premiership team, you should know better"

Yellow card offences
  1. Unsporting behaviour
  2. Dissent by word or action
  3. Persistent infringement of the Laws of the Game
  4. Delaying the restart of play
  5. Failure to respect the required distance when play is restarted with a corner kick, throw-in or free kick
  6. Entering or re-entering the field of play without the referee's permission
  7. Deliberately leaving the field of play without the referee's permission
I'd say at least two of them (1 and 4) align with Shiterlin booting the ball away. He should have walked.

It's classed as "dissent by action" which is why it's normally an automatic yellow card attracting the ire of pundits and managers alike.

What an opportunity for someone gifted in Photoshop skills!

Begging for another footballer to be merged into the frame - possibly with a pained expression after missing a golden oppty to score - but not on this occasion ;)

Foxy, bug for you: if you have a draft reply saved and the thread gets merged then you lose your draft! I almost suggested merging this with the ref thread last night, but anyway...

I'll take your word for it that Fonte wasn't a straight red at the end, but it remains that he, Mane, Wanyama and Schneiderlin did enough for two bookings each. I'm not saying they should have had five sent off (shades of Deano's Leicester!) but on another night any one of them could have gone off.

According to 1-5 EVERY free kick we get in the league should result in 1-3 bookings depending on how many join in the volleyball/jockeying the taker. This is what I find myself complaining about every home match, and following our biggest win of the season it can't possibly be the same 'sour grapes' as after MK. Referees are pathetic.

Ronald Koeman brought a football team to Bramall Lane to try and beat the home side. If he expects anyone to bow down to him, show deference to him, or allow his side to get away with trying to kick 10 bells of shite out of our players, then he has clearly brought his club to wrong place. Fuck him, mardy Dutch twat. I think there was a big of a plan to get under his skin, and it was executed magnificently. Straight out of the Clough senior handbook.

I'd think it was most likely classed as 2

Refs have a no win position .they want to try and keep everyone on the pitch so as not to spoil the occasion and only give reds where absolutely neccesary and will glaze over some offences. And they did moan about not getting a penalty for hand ball which Ive seen given but thought he was correct as no way could he have meant it .he was looking in the other direction. All in all I thought he reffed well.

Just watched his after match comments on the football league show.

Wow that guy made a fool of himself pompous git. He will have to see the foot doctor to have his toes surgically uncurled when he watches that back.

What a Bell End!

I half agree with you. The issue I had with the referee is that he never stamped out their bad tackles and it got out of hand. I think we got the decisions in terms of free kicks though.

I sit on the southstand. Korman showed a lot of disrespect by getting involved and goading the united bench. The amount of times he did that thing with the hand where you mock like a parrot got out of hand! His assistant was at one point practically in the united dug out in the 2nd half, yet we didn't approach their space or have a go at them (as far as I can remember)

Unsporting behaviour, my arse - Terry Paine would have simply levelled the main stand.
