Is it just me who has never heard of any of the players we ever sign?

Not saying it's necessarily a bad thing but I'd like to know if it's just my own ignorance or a common thing.

Out of the current 20 or so players in the squad the only ones I knew when we signed them were Brayford, Basham and Sharp.

I hadnt heard of Chris Hussey or James Wilson. Bassett signed a lot of players I hadnt heard of and we got two successive promotions

Could be saying the same buying a £38m Johnny Foreigner from Lyon or Leipzig . Still a risk , whoever they are .

At least our players can have the pleasure with there Wags of Champ- a Élysées Eccy Road

Brayford loves the coffee culture. May not know them , but at the end of next season everybody will.:D

I'd never heard of Basham or Brayford either. I had heard of Done, but only due to hearing his name on Radio Sheffield while he was at Barnsley.

Bert had never heard of that lad from Watford that John Harris signed in 1968 either.

On another thread I've asked what people would think if we signed a tall, pacy lad, with mediocre scoring record from a side at the bottom end of the league below us, and asked what people would think if i told them he would be the player to fire us to successive promotions.

A thorough knowledge of most football league players is reserved, in my opinion, for proper football boffins. Football Manager players, gamblers and just plain old nerdy bastards. No disrespect to any of these folk of course, because when we do sign lads a lot of people haven't heard of they're usually the first to give an opinion and a bit of insight to the rest of us mere mortals.

You're not on yer own, Nuddy. What's in a name, anyway? It's what they do for 90 minutes on a Saturday that counts. Nobody will care that we've signed a lad called Saddam bin Hitler if he bangs in a hat trick against Wednesday.

Looks like Wilder isn't snapping at the nibbles of interest he is getting from players agents. He is taking a diligent approach to see if A. They WANT to come to United and B. They want to achieve something out of the game. He should be applauded for that.

I hadn't heard of Hussey, O'Connell or Wilson but I am actually quite relieved as the only players I would recognise will be ex Prem/Championship, late 20's/early 30's and sinking to our level for a reason.

Who's that?

RONNIE FUCKIN PICKERING!!!!!

In his excellent book Soccornomics, Simon Kuper discusses the effect of Nick Hornby's books on the psyche of the average football fan. Kuper proves, by statistics, that the Hornbyesque notion of the 'superfan' who knows every intimate detail of football is extremely rare; much to the relief of us mere mortals.

John Harris signed Flynn after watching him play for Workington Town Reserves and Dearden came from Chester City. Can't imagine they were well known either but didn't turn out too bad. A good example of a manager seeing potential and moulding a side that is bigger than the sum of it's parts. Hopefully, Wilder is in the same vein.

Rowley signed Flynn

I think you only have to look at some of the teams in this league that have been at the top or there and thereabouts over the last 6 seasons to see that it's not about names. Some of the shite that's gone up is ridiculous.

It always surprises me when people haven't heard of players who have actually played against us quite a few times. Hussey scored a brace against us from left back!

I feel I'm good with names and perhaps know more than average, the only way I get my knowledge is watching players line up against us, and any live football/FLS on the telly. I just try to notice the names of impressive players, just to impress you lot. :D
