Adkins has brought a small team with him with no mention of scouting yet.

I haven't mentioned scouting for a couple of weeks but if anyone uses Facebook can you suggest to Jim that he places as much emphasis on the appointment of a Head Scout as he did the manager's job.

I would also suggest the appointment be announced at a Press conference and the new man/woman be instructed to give fans an abridged version of his regular reports to the Board.

It is perfectly possible to summarise areas and levels of activity without compromising club secrets.

Any new signings could be presented by the Head Scout alongside the manager if his work has led to the signing. Let's make the job high profile.

If you look at Adkins signings at previous clubs he is certainly not scared to look beyond these shores never mind further afield than Derby.

Don't think this will be an issue. He will have a solid network in place that's outsourced. Can't see the need for a per inane scout based at BDTBL unless ya bro ain't got a job

Who scouted his players at his previous clubs?
or did he do the leg work himself?

I doubt its as simple as appoint a new head coach - am betting that the whole scouting side is going to get a revamp and modernisation and that Adkins will probably be consulted and have a veto but he won't have control over scouting.

What exactly are you expecting the new man/(woman?) to say to fans in his/her regular reports?

If he/she says "We are currently monitoring the progress of Adams and Wallace who play for Ilkeston Town", who does that benefit other than our rivals?

The most he/she could possibly say is "We are currently scouting a couple of promising non-league players".

Wow! Good. That's kind of what the job entails. Do we really need a regular report to tell us such information?

If there is not a poll for suggestions, can I put forward his brother - if he has one. Given the sharing of middle names and birth months, if he has a brother called Simon then I wouldn't know what to think.

If Clough finishes up at Chesterfield he will be half way to catch more players from Derby and those he assigned for us when we sort out the squad as I am sure some ex Derby players will not be totally secure.
Adkins I am sure will know where to collect his players from, as the world does not finish at Blackpool or Derby.

The art and science of scouting is that the team involved are continually active watching games , and many prefer to be in the background . The most important set of people who know the kudos of a scout is not the press , fans , its scouts at other clubs . Many do not want the lime light , so what you suggest is off the mark .

The scout will prepare reports for the football management team. If he gives this information to the fans , he might as well tell the whole world who we are looking at . Daft idea and recipe for disaster .

Keep scouting confidential and any findings in house.

I don't agree with the mind-set of recruiting past players to try and replicate his success. Many of those players will be past their best now and NA needs to build his own new team to get out of this league.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a Manager going for his previous signings, its overdoing it that is a problem. If we need a certain type of player, and he happens to have used a player that he believes could fill the role perfectly for the budget he has, I'd say is a good thing. Shoehorning all your ex players in just because its who you know is where the problem is.

Not wishing to go off topic here but as far as back room staff are concerned - there's a guy at Southampton called Martin Hunter. Sure he's a Sheffielder and highly respected in the game. Pretty sure he's not willing to leave a Premier league set up but you never know if him and Adkins got on well.

Yes. A quality signing from a previous club who is not over 32 and past his best i don't have a problem with. It's the Clough-esque style reserve recruiting of former players that is not the way to go.

Nothing wrong with a bit of sensationalism to attract attention to an issue.

Our scouting has been naff for years and years. I remember raising the point with Adams at his "Meet the Manager" and he said he was aware it was an issue. We were without a scout for two and a half years before Dearden took it on.

The OP says no "compromising club secrets". I think we fans deserve to be told the extent and overall effort of the club scouting network. I have had grave doubts for years and our signings have reinforced those doubts. I think there is little to lose by giving us an insight into just how many people and how much effort goes into scouting. A resume of the rationale would be interesting too.

Let's take Simon Clough for example. Don't you think he should have explained to our 20000 fans in a Matchday Programme why he only looked in 3 distinct areas? He needed to explain why he was so restricted in his approach surely.
