How has this got to page two without a mention of Billy Sharp?!
Billy Whitehurst
He was stood on his seat at one point, Bert was a few rows behind.Think people are getting “hero” and “cult hero” mixed up.
Sharp is a hero not a cult hero.
I always thought a cult hero was someone that was very average or even a bit crap
But they won over the crowd (for some reason) and were really popular and adored at Bramall Lane, much more than their talent deserved. In recent times Porter comes to mind, pretty crap but a trier with a great attitude.
However the biggest was probably Bob Booker, he did fall into the “cult hero” status.
Someone who’d played all his career in the lower divisions.
When he joined us I remember seeing the report that “he never thought he’d ever have the chance to play at a big club in the top
flight and he’d wish to thank Dave Bassett for giving him the chance”
When he first played he was pretty crap, however he played like an enthusiastic fan.
Always gave 100% and always made a point of clapping the fans at the end.
Then gradually he improved and wasn’t as crap anymore. The fans saw he was limited but trying his best and like Bassett, he quickly became an adopted Blade, we appreciated his down to earth underdog qualities. He wasn’t actually that bad a player once he’d adjusted to playing at a new club.
Also Bookers cult hero status was boosted when he attended the famous Bobby Davison, Wednesday 1 United 3 away win at Hillsborough. I was stood up in the corner that night and personally saw Booker sat amongst Blades near the front of the Leppings Lane upper tier. He was stood up cheering the team and we all applauded him.
Alan Kelly
The biggest has to be William fatty Foulke
Unfortunately the name also now comes with more recent bad memories![]()

Morsy.
I'd put him on a new thread of unsung heroes, players who get the job done only noticed when there not playing.Doug Hodgson. Not much ability, but would run through a brick wall. Loved his attitude (and also his interviews)!!!
I had a few halves of lager with the man a few times in Josephines wine bar - great funny chap and keen on the amber nectar tooDoug Hodgson. Not much ability, but would run through a brick wall. Loved his attitude (and also his interviews)!!!
