Billy Dearden was a winger at Crewe, Chester and Oldham but rarely (if ever?) was used in that position for us. He was converted by Harris to be a striker cos of his positional nous, his finishing and above all his bravery. Too small to be a true centre forward though. The wingers were usually Salmons (like an express train alongside the cricket field but couldn't take the ball with him) and Scullion or Reece on the left.

Keith Eddy replaced Hockey - had a good brain but we missed Hockey's steel.

And the lessons of history? Beer was cheaper, pork pies had real dead pig in em - and we need Monty in our midfield!! :D

I had forgotten about Eddy, I liked him as a player as well.
I have a beermat signed by woody as well ahh memories. Thanks for the history lesson you missed the summers were warmer yadda yadda yadda,

I agree with all of the above except Cotterill - had a bad game yesterday but is a good player and will get even better!

How can people say cotterill is not good enough. What the hell seriously, he had a crap start to the season and a poor game at wembley but THATS IT. He's 21, he is the only player in the team that can last on the ball longer than 5 seconds and is one of the only player than has any bit of skill, and is one of about 3 with any sort of pace, he is the only person in front of the half way line that isn't afraid to run at teams. He's played awesome in so many games this season and im not sure about this but i wouldn't be suprised if he has the most assists. How people can say he isn't good enough is beyond me, yes there entitled to there own opinions but that opinion is ludacris!

... yes there entitled to there own opinions but that opinion is ludacris!

No... this is Ludacris ;)

ludacris-2006-clive-davis-pre-grammy-awards-party-iiPnTt.jpg

Seriously though, you can't say everyone is entitled to an opinion but that opinion is wrong. The definition of an opinion means it is subjective... there is no right or wrong opinion and I'm the person who tells people what they cannot say around here ;)

I said there opinions are ludacris. I.E. To me they're god damn insane! :P

Nice pic Linz something tells me you had that already and didnt search for it ;)

Remind me who Currie and Brown had besides them when on the top of their game? :)

Monty is excellent at what he's put in the side to do. Sadly, despite his sterling efforts, he isn't able to do the job of 3 other underperforming midfielders whilst going forward. If he was, he'd be playing for Manchester United.

I'M FAR TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER CURRIE!!! But Brown had the defensive, battling, tackling, hard working Stuart McCall alongside him (and a Young Monty!)

Most points taken, although I struggle to see where the "Monty" is in the Man utd side!!!:D:D

Brownie was, still is, a ball winner and runner but has a pass and a shot, Paul Scholes and Gatuso much the same,

Have you ever seen Paul Scholes tackle? I haven't!

Man U's Monty is Darren Fletcher. All Man U fans i speak to hate him! They're all glad he's suspended tonight. But did you hear Alex Ferguson say that he has been the motor in his midfield this season. Yes Fletcher has his doubters just like Montgomery but unless he breaks up the game your Ronaldo's, Scholes', Giggs' etc.. wouldn't look as good.

In our case Mini Quinn & The Dingle are shite, which makes Monty look crap because Monty does his job then the other two idiots fall over the ball or don't control it properly. (Think someone said above - Howard has the touch of an elephant!)

If i was in charge i would get rid of

Lee Hendrie : too high wages
Stephen Quinn : not good enough
Derek Geary : dead wood always injured
Beattie & Lupolli : Dont sign them
Danny webber : similar to geary always injured
Billy Sharp: not good enough
Leigh Bromby : never liked him

COUPLE OF SIGNINGS ID MAKE ON A RESONABLE WAGE

Ricky Lambert
Ross Wallace
Simeon Jackson
Wes Hoolahan
Matty Pattison

some of you may not agree but i think we need to get the dead wood out and some young lads in and start again

Ricky Lambert
Ross Wallace
Simeon Jackson
Wes Hoolahan
Matty Pattison

Ricky Lambert's 28 and not mobile enough for this level, the others would probably be decent shouts though in my opinion although I'm 50/50 about Pattison.

And we wouldn't be able to afford Wallace.

Given that Blackwell might be off, and that we certainly could do with changes in the coaching structure, however small or large, who should stay and who should go?

As far as the coaching staff stand then if one goes should they all? How much stability will that give us - we finished third, and almost secured automatic promotion. So Blackwell and his staff can't be as useless as people seem to think.

Now the squad, there are several who can go, and sooner rather than later.

Ones to keep -
Paddy, Bennett, Naysmith, Morgan, Kilgallon, Naughton, Walker, Cotterill, Montgomery, Ward.

Hmmmm, not sure -
Ehiogu - is he fit? Is he too old?
Speed - same as Ehiogu.
Bromby- will he be happy as cover, or will he want to play?
Sun Jihai - keep, or get rid? Can one of the younger players do his job?
Hendrie - will he perform if he gets the chance, and is he on too much money?
Geary - there is no doubt what this club means to him, so should he get the chance to coach, do we wait to see if he gets fit, which is highly unlikely, or do we get rid?
Henderson - we've seen what he can do in fits and starts, but can he be consistent? I'm not sure.
Howard - if he performs he's good, if he runs around like a headless chicken then he's pointless. To be fair to him it's hard to play when the ball spends most of the game floating over your head, but he's not made the most of his chances when he's had it at his feet.

Ones to sign -
Greg Halford - if he wants to come, and if we can afford him, and if Sunderland's new manager wants to sell, then sign him.
Lupoli - same for him. When he's had a chance he's played well. Will Fiorentina let him go?

Ones to get rid of -
Carney - what a waste. He looked good at first, but the shine soon wore off.
Small Quinn - has an alarming tendency to go missing. We might as well play 4-3-2 and let him have the day off.
Webber - a bit part player now. Get rid and spend the wages on someone else.
Billy Sharp - I really wanted him to be a massive success and score loads, but there's no chance of that. A crying shame, as you can see that scoring for us means as much to him as it would to any other Blade, but Warnock was right. Sorry Billy.
O-Toole - Why does he always look lost? He runs after the ball like a Jack Russell chasing a 99p newsagent's special on the beach. Very enthusiastic with no product.
Craig Beattie - he might have been a decent signing but for two good reasons. If he didn't whinge and moan like a spoiled brat every time a decision from the officials didn't go his way, and if he tried passing the ball to one of our players when they were in a good position. West Brom can have him back with pleasure.

Hendrie in the not sure pile? he should be the first out of the door in my opinion, if I had me way I would also get rid of Howard His 'I'm a big game player' comments were disgusting where was he for the rest of the season? We need a better quality of creative midfielder not these names who offer little and drain the club I would rather take a punt on someone from the lower leagues than have them.
I wouldnt keep any of the loan players except Alfie but unfortunately I dont think we will see him again ... Im pretty much resigned to the fact that Naughton will be going which is again a shame I would have liked to see him at the club for longer but have no doubts that Walker can adequately fill his boots.. I also have a feeling Killa will get snapped up also.
Sharp and Webber must be nearing the end of their stay, I know Webber is definately leaving anyways
I feel we might have to aqcuire a central defender as I said earlier i think Killa will go, other than that the midfield and strike force need the most surgery...
Cotterill needs to turn up for more than 2 months at the end of the season, providing that he does I would keep monty and him in Mid but start looking looking for a wingers and central midfielder I also feel that none of our strikers are good enough, Hendo is a mediocre Championship striker who can do an adequate target man role and Ward is a bench player in my opinion, I feel he's too naive, yes hes got pace but so's a whippet he hasnt scored than many based on appearances and has made mistakes, he could be one for the future but atm i think we need to look for someone better i dont think we will challenge with a strikeforce of henderson and ward...
I appreciate blackwells honesty, I hope he doesnt go too much dead wood would be given a clean slate and we will just be going round in circles, if he was to leave Coppell/coleman would be adequate replacements but we would probably go with the cheap option and go with Speed, this would not suffice it would be another Robson, he needs to cut his teeth at a lower level first in terms of management... I dont think blackwell will go though I think when the dust settles he will realise he will not get a better job than what hes got atm

I think you've been a tad harsh on Hendrie and Speed, but I agree with the majority of things you've said.

Hendrie hasn't been given enough chances for us in my opinion, and must be very frustrated by this. It's hard to perform to your best when you're only getting 20 minute spells now and again.

Since Speed has been more involved in the coaching side, we've started playing some good football and picked up some good results, apart from the 2 Burnley games. It might be too early for him to get the manager's job because it's a difficult situation for him to come into, but I don't think he'd be as bad as Robson. He knows the club know and he knows what the fans expect, so I think he's capable of doing a decent job.

keep
Bennett, Naysmith, Morgan, Kilgallon, Naughton, Walker, Cotterill, Montgomery, Ward.

not sure
Billy Sharp - I really don’t want to sell him for his form to come good and bite us in the arse loan him out to Doncaster see if its him or the system we play cant believe he’s the same player that played for Scunthorpe

Howard- come good towards end of season got him cheap lets see what hes like next season

Ehiogu- knocking on a bit think this would be his last season any way all depends on what wages he’s on.

Speed – getting too old make a good coach

Bromby- squad player nothing special

Sun Jihai – keep if he’s willing to play midfield sell if he only wants to play right back

Hendrie – needs to have a run in the team to see if he can do it

Henderson – hmm not sure holds ball up well good at scoring headers but if him playing causes the long ball to come out sell him fast

Kenny- think his contracts almost at end some agro over wages?, long ball from goal constantly when a simple ball to the Kyle’s would do is annoying doesn’t command his area well but great shot stopper

sign
Greg Halford – good player great to have some one who can play different posisions sign him.

Ones to get rid of -
who ever it is that thinks long ball to one poor lone striker is a good tactic to go in to a play off final (blackwell / sam ellis ?)
Carney – waste of money get him off wage bill
Quinn – rubbish most inconsistent player we have
Webber – fast at running in to dead ends cant Finnish send he to Warnock
O-Toole – not good enough
Geary – too many injury’s not short of full backs

Ones to keep
Paddy, Bennett, Naysmith, Morgan, Kilgallon, Naughton, Walker, Cotterill, Montgomery, Ward.

I'd agree with this

not sure
Ehiogu, Speed - I'd have in coaching capacity, or get rid of Sam Ellis and make Speed assistant coach.

Bromby- Dependant on cost for me. I think if we get him on a free, then fine. If not then we want someone better
Sun Jihai - Dependant on whether the manager thinks he has a future. If rumours are right that he only wants to play RB, then he has no future at the club.
Hendrie - Again, dependant on the manager, I see no reason not to play him though.
Geary - Release - even though I love him
Henderson - Doesn't work for me, not good enough to play the 4-5-1 blackwell likes to play
Howard - undecided, he has something.....

To sign
Greg Halford
Lupoli
O'Toole

Ones to get rid of -
Carney, Quinn, Webber, Billy Sharp, Craig Beattie - Agreed

I'd add Henderson to this though and maybe others.

We certainly need a striker, because Ward and Henderson just won't get us anywhere near the goals we require.

I like Ward, but he's not going to be a prolific striker, and nor is Henderson.

The definites in the squad next season:
Morgan
Walker
Bromby
Quinn
Monty
Ward
Hendo
Howard
Haber

I think all the others could be sold, i think this'll be the biggest shake up of the squad we've seen at the lane for a while!
