Who should Sheffield United fans be supporting in German football?

SC Freiburg is the one for me.

Mid table, but play nice football with a good innovative manager - Christian Streich.

A superb young CB/defensive mid called Robin Koch. Young Luca Waldschmidt up front is a bit useful as well, alongside their old fox version of Billy - Nils Petersen.

Generally play in an ok red and black design, sometimes some white, so can relate a bit to that.

Lovely part of the country if you get hooked and want to visit later on as well. Camped nearby at Kirchzarten many times in my youth.

Let’s go Breisgau Brazilians.

Generally well liked by most other Bundesliga clubs. 👍

I'd have to say Borussia Dortmund as I went there to see them play Eintracht Frankfurt in February. It was for a mate really, who'd always wanted to go but it was a great trip.

Slightly amusing story... we went to the German Football Museum in Dortmund on the day of the game. I was wearing my Blades polo shirt and there were a number of Dortmund fans wandering round too. Some lads in Dortmund shirts asked me to take their photo and one of them recognised my Blades emblem and said "Sheffield United, very good team, we play you next season in Champions League".... being the typical cynical Blade, I said "I doubt it mate, maybe if you lot only qualify for the Europa league".

Not surprisingly, they also have a large section on each World Cup and despite how many they've won, there is a big thing about Geoff Hurst's second goal (England's 3rd goal) in the 66 Final never being a goal, there's these voting buttons and obviously the vote is heavily stacked in favour of no goal, so obviously I kept pressing the Goal button. This german even came up to me and said it wasn't a goal, I said "yeah mate, well read the record books".

The beer is good too.

It's a shame Bochum are no longer in the top tier.
I think Stefan Kuntz of Bochum was the top scorer in the Bundesliga once.

Apparently some games are free to watch on Sky Bet (please gamble responsibly).

Union Berlin.

Red and white, working class club traditionally in the second tier, experiencing their first season in the top league and doing pretty well. They have a bitter rivalry with the blue and white side of the city with delusions of grandeur who play in a rusty old ground waaaay too big for them, which was given to them by the government (albeit in much different circumstances to our porcine neighbours).

Also, I live here.

According to an article I read yesterday about which Bundedliga team the fans of respective PL clubs should support, they matched us with Union Berlin.

Sounds ok by me but Sunday's first game back looks daunting. Hopefully some Tufty attitude will prevail.

Edit: sorry Roygbiv just seen you've posted the article I've referred to

I just don't want Bayern to win the title. Yes, I'd even prefer RB Leipzig to win it. Go on, come at meh....

I think I'll follow Mainz, just because they have an interesting group of players.

Also Leverkusen, and Gladbach, and Schalke, and Eintracht Frankfurt......

Lot of interesting teams in that league. It's hard to fault it generally. I just wish they'd expand to 20 teams and do away with the hideously long winter break.

It'll be a relief just to watch football again. Even with no crowds, it's a big time for the Bundesliga. Big exposure. Eyes of the football world solely on it.

I've said this before but never get bored of saying it! My favourite German team is definitely FC Kaiserslautern - liked them ever since they ended Wednesday's European adventure back in 1992 time! Since then sadly they've dropped into the regional leagues. In their absence I think Union Berlin seems a good fit as others have said.

Eintracht Frankfurt were my German team in the mid 1970s. Dont know why as I didnt know any of their players despite knowing quite a lot who played for Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach (they had a good team in the 1970s). I just looked for their results in the papers before losing interest. Found out this week that there were two West Germany players that I knew from the 1974 World Cup final were Eintracht Frankfurt players! Jurgen Grabowski (tricky right winger) and Bernd Holzenbein (who dived for the penalty that Breitner converted)

best supported club in Germany

Due to Football Manager and taking Koln to consecutive Bundesliga titles and reaching the latter stages of the champions league, I was going to say them, and then I did the squawka survey and they gave me...

FC Koln haha. Perfect. Shame they are shit though.

You've sold em to me. Union Berlin it is then.
