It appears from postings over the past week that opinion is divided on our beleagured manager - Whilst we all know he won't be going anywhere until at least the summer It would be interesting to have a Poll to see just who has faith that Mr Wilson can get us promoted this season.
Unfortunately, I don't have the know how or savvy to put a poll together but I am sure someone can help me out on this one:
The question should be:
  1. We will achieve automatic promotion this season under Wilson
  2. We will achieve a play off spot this season under Wilson
  3. We will not finish in the top 6 under Wilson
Hopefully someone can help!!

I'd back him. I hate the short-termism when it comes to football managers. He's shown enough positives for me, and yes, he's also lacking elsewhere. People man-manage situation differently to how we ourselves might, but that doesn't make it wrong or right, it just is. I'd stick with him at least until the summer. At the end of the season, we'll be a minimum in the play-offs and it's not un-realistic to think we'll be challenging for automatic spots either.

For Fiery....

(I added a 4th question...!)

I like DW as a bloke, and am certainly grateful for the style of football he has introduced in his time here. Unfortunately, it's always in the back of my mind that speaking to other fans of clubs he's managed always seems to come down to his very conservative approach and the lack of a plan B. It's all very well saying sack him and get another man, but, what if it turned out to be Adams all over again!!! If the board agree to sack Wilson, then, it would have to be probably one of the most, if not, THE most important signing in this clubs history!! Because by God we need to get out of this division.
In no way should there be anything derogatory said against him IMO. Having said that, if we don't achieve promotion this season, be it automatic or play-offs then i'll be the first to say he's a, 'Dirty pig bastad!!!' ;):p

I'm being optimistic that Danny will be able to move one or two out and sign the one or two he clearly needs to give the team a lift. If he can, we will find our form again and go up automatic. If he can't he's a good enough manager to get us into the playoffs.

He's taking a lot of stick on here lately and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but he's well down the list of blame in my mind when it comes to responsibility for our current failings. I have faith in his ability, it's other individuals I struggle to have faith in.

im gutted with our current run, but actually if you look at our last 4 results, its 3 out of the last 4 that have been crap, the draw at donny was a great point in the end.

i dont think sacking wilson is the answer, it may be at the end of the season tho.
ive got mates who are bristol city fans, and swindon fans, and his run with blades seems to be v similar to when he was with them. great first season, then seems to bottle it. im also worried that other teams are on great runs, and seem to pick up points virtually every week. we are really nervous, but its only gonna get worse as we're expected to win being the "biggest club" in the div.

that said, last season wendies wouldnt have thought they could go up 2nd and i was amazed man city beat manure to the title, so im hoping for a great turn around

Good work on the thread and poll boyz. I was thinking of doing something similar.

I have talked about this quite a lot on other threads. Therefore I will not bang on about it. I expect us to regain a bit of form and start grinding results out, but to fall short again. Wilson is a nearly man and this will be another occassion. A lot of us had doubts before he came, about his average record, and now it is difficult to ignore it. I look at his record in detail (attached) and just do not have any confidence he can take us up automatically. There is still a chance and I hope he proves me wrong. Unfortunately though, I just cannot see it. Wilson is known for getting good results early and getting his teams playing good football. However something always seems to go wrong and his teams lose form and he eventually gets sacked or quits. The most worrying thing for me is that he has had 10 attempts to get out of this division and the only one he succeeded with was getting MK Dons relegated. He had a very good team last year and failed, spent money at Bristol C and failed and had a good squad with Swindon and failed. With all those teams he lost in the play offs every time (3 final defeats and a semi).

On top of Wilson's record, I think we have seen this season he is a limited manager. His tactics are often poor, he has no plan B, he struggles to motivate the team and he is very conservative. His negativity and poor subs can be really frustrating. I have just not seen anything this term that suggests we will go on a Wednesday-esque run or start a run like Coventry and Bournemouth have had/are having. We ground results out earlier in the season, but many of us thought we were lucky. We got to top of the league and I was thinking lord knows how. Like I said, it is early days and there are plenty of games to play. However this does not have the feel of promotion seasons in the past. If anything it is like Blackwell's season when we finished 3rd and fooked it in the play offs.

Semi final defeat is my prediction for this year.

Yeah but Danny Wilson is the only manager in this league who has achieved promotion to the Premier League.

So we're going to piss the league.

much as it pains me to say I feel we are going to finish outside the playoffs so I say replace him now and give the new guy time to settle in and mould his squad for next season. (just not with Micky Adams)

There is literally no chance of a top two finish. In order to put together the kind of run we need we would have to have luck, consistency and the elimination of mistakes, an unprecedented uptick in form, and inspirational motivation accompanied by fluency and coherence in our style of play. Most of these things would have to appear from nowhere, since they haven't been in evidence so far except sporadically. Even if we generated the kind of run of results to put us in contention, someone else would pip us. Too many other teams are playing too well. Some look like they are cruising, in fact. Going back to the basics of trying to grind out win-draws as earlier in the season wouldn't see us pick up enough points, even if we could do it with half our defence missing. It's not implausible that we could stumble upon the right attacking mix, but it would be by accident.

I think we might make the playoffs but that will be useless to us. If I had a prediction this year it would be for us to buck the trend and get eliminated in the semi-finals, ruining our otherwise flawless playoff record with something truly abject rather than aspirationally so. In either that scenario or finishing outside the playoff places I expect Wilson to be sacked at the end of the season.

In terms of proposing changes to the manager, the only thing worth considering is whether we could find an individual that could put us on a pigs-style late-season run and I think that is really really unlikely.

I have been in Wilsons corner for the most this season mainly due to style of play he brought to the club last season.

As I mainly go most games at home apart from Bournmouth and Stevenage it's been poor.

I've talked to hard core Blades and the part time lads( those who pick their games) every single one wants Wilson out.
I reckon at most we should give him 3 more league games to turn it round if it's not working bring in someone else this could kick start things might salvage the season.
It's for sure things can't go on as they are.

Sunderland saw us off in the Play Offs in 98 at the semi-final stage so that's been done.

Until I read your post I'd managed to put the 2-0 second leg defeat so far back in my mind I'd missed it from the "worst ever matches" thread. God that was a long journey home.

For fuck sake beaten at home on saturday , now only a 2-2 draw against a piss poor team , that's it if we don't win on satdi in the cup manager has to go, Rosler out , ooopps sorry wrong set of fickle fans.

Take your pick Dubbers. There are 92 sets of fickle fans in the league. Always has been, always will be.

Fook me, I remember that. I was there that evening. I actually thought we played ok and should have got a result. Saunders missed several sitters and one of them was easier to score than miss. It was a cracking atmosphere and good experience, but the journey home was a long one.

Did we not lose in the play off semi's to Bristol City in 1988 also? Format was different, but still a semi exit.

Yes, Olle we lost 2-1 on aggregate I think Carl Shutt scored both the goals
Third bottom 2nd Div v Third Top 3rd Div I seem to remember

I think LS26 may have a story about the Bristol City game, though it's not one he wishes to share regularly.

Tongue in cheek mate , tongue in cheek , although I'm sure the fans of mew, the 2 scousers, Stoke, Spurs, to name but 5 would differ from your statement . My silver haired friend. UTB.

Would mew be Manchester United per chance? Or the prawn sandwich brigade to quote an ex player of theirs who was none too chuffed at perceived lack of support.
As for the scousers I suggest you've never been there when we've won as they don't take it any better than us. Indeed at Anfield they were booing to the rafters after some no marks beat them earlier in the season according to the reporter on 5Live after the game.
You're probably right about Stoke though, they never get booed off as the knuckle draggers are waiting outside the away end (or steaming into it) long before the final whistle every time I've been there (both grounds!).

I appreciate it was "tongue in cheek" though.

With ya there brother the other stoke ground was a hole , could get a bit tasty alright, think anderson ? scored in our 2-1 defeat. The year I went , I think a blade went running onto pitch and going after ref after ruling out an equaliser, thought the prawn sandwich jibe was because of lack of knowledge of the game and just expecting to spank everyone , due to being biggest club in league , and paying most in wages. T. I .C again ?

Ahh, remember it well. To go all Silent/Dazzler for a moment, said referee was one Ken Walmsley of Blackpool. We were comfortable mid table when we went there, they won courtesy of a "never in this world" penalty when Garth Crookes went flying about a yard away from the nearest Blade at a corner and an equaliser wrongly dissallowed for offside (a view clearly backed up by coverage on Midlands TV the following day) both real "homer" decisions. Needless to say this result sparked our worst run of the season and we went on to get relegated and I always look back at this match in particular as the crucial one we deserved to win but lost, thus my remembering the grey haired wanker in black for all eternity.
