In contrast to the thread asking for which opposition players have infuriated you, which players did you think would act a right bastard against us but actually turned out alright?

I'll kick off with Ashley Cole. Commonly acknowledged as a massive bell-end, but, after scoring a well-taken winning penalty in a shoot-out in front of the Kop for Arsenal, rather than giving it some big time celebrating, he clapped our fans and seemed to make a point of commiserating our players (not in a piss-taking way) as I recall.

Maybe he wants to move here in the future? ;)

If one is allowed to say a manager, Mourinho took it all in good spirit. I also always wanted to hate Brian Laws, for obvious reasons, but couldn't find myself to, and he handily let his Scunthorpe team be rolled over last season.

Paul Merson ,took the worst corner ever seen ,it literally went 2 yards and bobbled out for a goal kick ,had a good laugh with the kop. He was probably pissed.

Off on a tangent ,my mates lad has signed for Man Utd as their keeper at under 14s and is training with Beckhams lad. Beckham had a chat with him the other day and asked who he supported ,'Sheffield United-suppose someone has to' was his hardly mindblowing response. Has Beckham ever played against us ?

paul gascoigne playing for spurs.. best player i've ever seen in the flesh
I immediately thought of Gazza when I saw this thread. Was that the one where someone threw a mars bar at him and he picked it up and started eating it?

I saw him a few months before Italia 90 at White Hart Lane for Spurs v Man Utd and I have never seen a better performance by anyone in person. He is to me what George Best was to my dad.

i remember that. It was in 1993-4, and Arsenal were looking for a winner late on when it was 1-1. That took all the tension out of the game. I recall Merson doing a little bow to the kop after the ball went out of play, and everyone laughing.

Another funny Arsenal moment was Andy Linighan warming up during the cup replay in 1996, and getting a stnding ovation from the kop for his outstanding service to Sheffield football in May 1993. Linighan laughed and held his arms aloft, milking the applause!

I did'nt expect him to be a bell end, but Rooneys performance against us at the lane in the prem was the best performance I've ever seen by a human being. He played at centre half, right wing, up front, it was like he'd been cloned. Bald bastards all over the pitch, but they were all him.

In the run up to the big, top of the table clash with Wigan in the 4th Division- Larry Lloyd made some ukind comments about the Blades. During the match at the Lane- he was getting stick from the Kop and responded by pulling his shorts down to reveal his arse. For this, the player/manager got a talking to from the ref and was cheered by the crowd.

He hasn't unless it was when he was very young at Preston and I can't remember it. I must admit he's one of few English players that I've never seen live that I wish I had done.

Think he's played against the reserves at the very least, I'm sure I recall seeing him.

I remember watching Blades v Man Utd reserves when Beckham,Scholes,Neville's were playing and all around late teens,Beckham scored a good goal from around 30 yards out wide, think they won 4-1 or something.Would have been around 1992/93 i reckon.

I would have been delighted to include the pie man as a twat I can't He was a great keeper and a good sport when he kept us at bay..
When in discussion with my mates who are Wendy fans I would tell them that my best wendy X1 since 1970 would be like this
Pressman
Nilsson Lyons Walker Worthington
Waddle Sheridan Palmer (every team needs a grafter!) Craig
Hirst Di Canio

I would say that the most famous player in England since 1970 I had never seen us play is Beckham. I didnt see Jimmy Greaves play either but I met him and shook his hand at WHS at a book signing session

We didnt play against Preston between 1989 and early 2000s

I remember the champions league match when Lionel messi went for a couple of pints in the railway before the match , bought everyone a drink and only left 5 minutes before kick off. Top bloke.

Early 70s and Liverpool came to the Lane as either champions or champions elect. They lost 1-0 and were rightly gutted. Was stood outside the old players entrance on John St. when a few Liverpool players came out including Ray Clemence who looked like he had been boxing rather than playing football. Despite looking rather groggy he reacted to the banter from Blades standing around by coming over having a word or two and signing a few autographs, being rather magnanimous in defeat. Went right up in my estimation that night.

Last reserve game of the season... can't remember much about it but I know I was there.
