Given the likely re-appointment of CW, which players do we think he’ll be looking forward to working with ? … and more importantly, which ones can step up and fit into the role/style he’s likely to ask for?
My immediate list of players who will absolutely give him exactly what he needs to work with are…
Tanganga… great attitude and tenacity
Matos… raw but showed plenty of energy and bite
Soumare… There’s a very good box to box midfielder in there.
Chong… high energy, adaptable and a nice directness.
Ogbene… pace, pace, pace
Mee … Can be Wilders leader and organiser as well as still being a very solid defender with an infectious will to win attitude.
Ings … exactly the sort of know-how Wilder loves and a great attitude.
What are your thoughts?

The squad is there to do well in this division, just needs the right man to get the most out of it.

A few of us have discussed the possibility of going back to Wilder’s old 5-3-2 / 3-5-2 and that we potentially have the players that could make it a success, so yeah with the right direction there could still be some hope for the season yet!

Totally agree … we definitely seem made for 3 at the back now.

For a guy that was about to snap up Darking and Dunne I'm sure he'll be happy with McGuinness as well.
Tandanga, Matos, Mee and even Chong will be right up his street though.

My personal opinion is i hope these yanks have some money left for the January transfer window cos the players they've just wasted money on are not good enough. Panic buying at the highest order. Souza, Moore and Anel were not world beaters but their miles ahead of the replacements. Even though there's 41 games left i fear the worst, I don't think even Wilder can get some of these to perform any better. Piss poor owners, piss poor ex-manager and piss poor signings = disaster.

There are definitely a few in that category and it’s a poor situation but I think there are enough good players to avoid relegation, which in my view is the only realistic target at this stage. Hopefully enough step up to enable some different targets later.

I'm curious what he will make of Zatterstrom. Will he see him as a development player or someone who can help him revive the overlapping centre halves system.

He is a bit raw but quick and aggressive. Could he play Tanganga RCB, Zatterstrom LCB and either Mee or McGuiness in the middle.

I also think Chong is a very Wilder player so expect to see more of him.

I suspect either Matos or Soumare will hold at the side of Peck but be asked to sit and hold that position. Bizarrely against Ipswich Selles seemed to have Matos as part of the press (when it occurred).

Just about everyone would have driven Moore anywhere following his assist at Wembley, now it fits an agenda some are starry eyed

Imo Tanganga is an Anel upgrade, more physical and we need that

Souza is a loss, but give matos & soumare a chance before writing them off??

This team is too 6

Cooper
Tanganga-mee-mcguiness
Ogbene-matos-Hamer-peck-burrows
Ings-campbell

Ohare, soumare, one, Barry, blaster, Godfrey, Chong etc

The first thing he has to do is sack the players who haven't been trying, they have basically told the manager, the club, and most importantly the fans to fuck off.

On the evidence so far Tanganga for one looks plenty good enough.

We've signed 14 players. In chronological order:

Tyler Bindon (signed on loan 04/07): will probably have to content himself as a backup now. Fourth choice CB at best, likely to be sent back to Forest in January.
Louie Barry (22/07, loan): will have to content himself with a rotational role. May well respond to Wilder's tactical rigidity. Will suffer if we switch to 3-4-1-2 as there's no obvious place for him in that formation
Mihail Polendakov (22/07, perm): will have to prove himself in the 21s but best hope is a cameo off the bench. Third or fourth choice RB
Djibril Soumaré (04/08, initial loan): I've got high hopes for Soumaré, even if he was at fault for Ipswich's fifth. Can cement his place in the midfield, being left footed adds balance
Ben Godfrey (22/08, loan): where does he go from here? Will probably start against Charlton but the signs aren't good. Doubtful that Atalanta will allow us to terminate his loan so we've got him for the season
Nils Zätterström (22/08; perm): one for the future at centre half. May play in the 0-1 defeat to Shrewsbury in the FA Cup 3rd round but don't think he'll even make the bench that often
Danny Ings (27/08; perm): Wilder loves a senior centre forward (cf Leon Clarke; David McGoldrick). Ings may well prove to be a key player this season
Japhet Tanganga (28/08; perm): will be first choice centre half and rightly so.
Tahith Chong (29/08; perm): suspect he'll start as a rotation option but may well end up first choice in midfield
Alex Matos (01/09; perm): will have to battle Soumaré and Peck for a midfield spot but his attitude and workrate at Ipswich couldn't be faulted.
Mark McGuinness (01/09; perm): not a great start to his United career but he's another one who would suit 3-5-2. May have to content himself as backup to Tanganga in a back 4 given Wilder's preference for a left-footed LCB
Ben Mee (01/09; perm): depends on the formation. If we revert to 3-4-1-2 he would be a shoo-in for the LCB position
Chiedozie Ogbene (01/09; loan): again, probably depends on the formation we play, although he can cover at RWB in a 3-5-2 he's better as a winger. Attitude and workrate will stand him in good stead with Wilder.

Based on the squad, I suspect that we'll end up playing either 3-4-1-2 with five new signings (Cooper; Tanganga - McGuinness - Mee; Seriki - Peck - Soumaré - Burrows; Hamer; Ings - Campbell) or 4-2-3-1 with four (Cooper; Seriki - Tanganga - Mee - Burrows; Peck - Soumaré ; Ogbene - O'Hare - Hamer; Campbell).

I think Tanganga, McGuiness, Mee, Ogbene and Ings are just the type of experienced players that Wilder likes, and will all do well. Perhaps Chong too.

Bindon, Zaterstrom, Matos, Soumare and Barry are a bit harder to call. Wilder doesn't always trust younger players, so they might struggle to adapt as well. Matos and Soumare look decent though.

I’d be amazed if Soumaré, Bindon, Zatterstrom or Matos play again for us.

I think Barry & Chong will only play out of lack of other options but expect both to be on the bench most games.
I reckon he'll like Matos. Tough tackling, energetic type. Plus we can't go until January without playing a DM.

Development signings
Ukaki, Polendakov and Zätterström: all three go to the U18/23's I reckon, maybe loan moves in January for Ukaki and Zätterström.

First team squad signings
  • Bindon: probably returns to Forest in January
  • Barry: bench, frequently used sub
  • Soumare/Matos: one starts, other on bench
  • Godfrey: bench, option for RB + CB
  • Tanganga/McGuinness: starting CB's in a back 3 and back 4
  • Mee: bench CB, or starting CB in a back 3
  • Chong: bench, frequently used sub
  • Ogbene: starting RW, maybe a starting RWB
  • Ings: bench/rotation

Zatterstrom will get nowhere near it under Wilder.

Great summary

I almost think a lot of the transfer window was done with wilder returning in mind. Selles was obviously 90 mins from the sack

But of the late signings

Ogbene - can see wilder liking him. Good character. Local connection. Gonna give 100%

McGuiness - a ‘defender’. Gonna win his battles particular in the air.

Chong - but of a shithouse. You can see wilder getting something out of him and enjoying that.

Tanganga - wilder has been after him before.

Mee / ings. Some experienced old heads. Wilder values a veteran leader. Both could be that.

Matos - High energy. You can imagine wilder eating that up.

Would allow him to play a 352 if he wanted.

Of the rest

Godfrey. Sort of signing wilder would make I think.

Bindon - wil need to toughen up if he wants a place in the squad.

Zatterstrom. Youth prospect.

Soumare - need to see more of. Selles obviously didn’t rate him.

Barry - think we were linked under wilder? Sure he’ll have a role to play.

Burrows, Campbell, Cooper, Hamer, Peck, COH should all be like new signings if they play anything like they did last year

He’ll love quite a few of the new boys despite him not signing them.

Ings & Mee - he loves a end of his career experienced player that he gets the final bit out of

Chong & McGuinness - he always loved a wildcard that he knew had more in his locker he just had to get it out

Tenganga - he tried to sign.

Matos - hard worker, exactly what wilder demands

Then you’ve got the current crop whoever under performed since he left but loved wilder while he was here - Cooper, Hamer, Campbell, Peck, Burrows

I have a higher opinion of our fans than you. He needs to win about 20% of the fanbase over. And it doesn’t really matter if he doesn’t. All of those not hopelessly trapped in the past and those who aren’t just thick moved on a couple of months ago. The rest don’t matter.

Mousinho should have been who we went for in the summer. Appointing Selles has turned out to be a huge mistake, and the way it appears it is being dealt with will set the club back and ensure the fans continue to be polarised and divided for a good while to come.

Just about everyone would have driven Moore anywhere following his assist at Wembley, now it fits an agenda some are starry eyed

Most fair minded Unitedites,
thought it a daft error, but that he'd had a half decent season.

I'm not unhappy he went at that point, because tge charlatan was never going to play him.

If every time a player makes an error, he gets crucified, we might as well give up now

It's a shame we didn't go ahead and sign Dunne and certainly Darling, who was available on a free.

Maybe it's just the Hamza effect but I can see Chong being a Wilder player too! High energy, direct, fairly versatile.
Aside from him
Mee
Ings
McGuinness
Ogbene
Godfrey
Maybe Matos
Maybe he can get a tune out of Soumare. I really hope we see more of him either way. For some reason I think he could develop into an important player this season.

I think that, of all those players, Soumare is the one that I was personally most excited about, and he's looked pretty good so far this season, even as we've obviously been terrible on the whole. I think Wilder will prefer Peck to him, however. I think he'll like Matos, he's obviously very young but like you say, he's got some bite to him. Tanganga and Mee will be nailed on starters. I think he'll prefer Chong to Barry.
