My first proper season going was the famous 2002/03 one, so obviously I tried to model my U9’s Sunday League game on Brown and Tonge!

My all time favourite player was Roger Nilsen.

I can see this raising a few eyebrows.

I quite liked him in the sense that along with Kelly & Tracey they all lasted through multiple different United eras – Bassett, Kendall, Spackman, Thompson, Bruce. He was though in truth a bit of a mixed bag – always seemed to have a clanger in him, was a patchy passer, but a decent and brave tackler that had a ridiculously hard-though-unsuccessful shot on him. We signed him originally as a left-back but I preferred him in the middle. I could never really understand though why when he was ageing and seemingly winding down his time at United, Spurs gave him another stint in the Prem.

Addison is probably one of the most underrated players we've ever had , both at the time he played and subsequently .

Woody , TC and Sabella are all legends but Gary Hamson !!?? Were you going through some kind of identity crisis , Silent ?

Addison was the first because he scored the winner in the FA Cup against Everton and it was when I started to fall in love with the Blades.

Gary Hamson is one of our best youth players we have ever had. The only Blade to have made at least 100 starts in league football in his teenage years. Had terrible luck with injuries at L**ds.

Joe Shaw. It always amazed me how he could out jump the big, rough centre forwards of yesteryear with impeccable timing. Most of all the way he ran with the ball and the way he passed it so smoothly and silkily. Always finding space for himself as the better footballers tend to do.

What Joe Shaw was doing instinctively and with consumate ease 60 years ago is exactly what top clubs all around the world are looking for in a centre back , and they are prepared to pay huge sums of to obtain the services of anyone who comes anywhere near the standards that he achieved .

I'm still waiting to see one who does .
