After the total and utter feck up called last season I was really worried that if we started this one as bad it could go really shite by the end, especially as there would of people after DW from the off which wouldn't of helped performances, confidence etc.

However I also thought we had the players to get into the play offs at the very least if we started off ok.

So I didn't really have the foggiest before the first game.

I like it that DW seems to be taking it game for game so thats what I am gonna do, so my prediction is second after the game on Sunday..(which we will win)

The pessimist in me (and contrary to our record of Auto promotion challenges) says we will balls it up somewhere along the way, and end up in the play-offs.

And we all know how good we are in the playoffs

champions. charlton are overdue a sticky patch.. their results might suggest they are running out of steam

I went for finishing in the playoffs last time. But IF we win on Sunday I honestly believe we can and will pass Charlton. They really havent had a blip at all

Probably because this is not a political thread I find myself in agreement with WalthamstowBlade. The club we support is Sheffield United. Therefore we are bound to find some new way of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

But we don't in this situation. History shows that when we are averaging 2 points a game or thereabouts by this time of year we get promoted (81-82, 88-89, 89-90, 05-06). It's only when we need to win our last game to get promoted/avoid relegation that we fuck it up.

As an add-on to that thread about stats. I've knocked up an Excel spreadsheet here which shows a graph of the points the Champions and 6th place got over the last 5 years.

As I'm more than rusty with Excel, tips on how I could include our progress from now till the end of the season into the graph would be appreciated.:)

I think the biggest threat as it stands at the moment is Huddersfield but that could all change.

There is still 17 games to go, but if we keep going with the current form i'd be pretty confident but that could all change, when a couple of sets of results go against us.

I said outside play-offs at the start of the season, but having reflected on the season so far I would disappointed if we don't finish inside the play-offs.

charlton play stevenage on saturday , be of interest if stevenage win and we can move within 1 win on sunday

Assuming Charlton also lose at home to Rochdale tonight too....

I see a win tonight for Charlton and a draw Saturday./

MK Dons quietly picking up points. They have an easy run in,ours looks tough. Don't discount them from 2nd if we have a little dip in March

looks no easier than ours and before getting carried away 6 out of the bottom 7 won last saturday , its that time when the bottom get desperate and games get less predictable

we win our game in hand we are still 10 points in front of dons

Dons actually looked the weakest of the sides around us when we played them earlier in the Season.

If we win on Sunday, Champions.

So if what you are saying is correct FB, it's a much bigger game than we first thought.
Now let me consider the recent history of Blades performances when it really matters.........................

Nope - fucked!

Shame when you think that the 3rd division is the last remaining division of the propoer league that we have not won - Wolves pipped us last tiem we went up from this league.

You're right that historically we have tended to do well from similar positions.

Also, I don't think we've messed up much when needing to win our last game to be sure of promotion - 1989-90 needed to beat Leicester and duly thrashed them 5-2; 1983-4 although Hull still had another game to play we really had to beat Newport in our last game (after 2 very bad results) and did so 2-0,; and in 1970-1 didn't we need to beat Watford to be sure? We did so 3-0.

However, the memory of all those last day relegation disasters and failed play-off finals has ingrained a pessimistic outlook in me with regard to all things Sheffield United!

And we beat Darlington when we needed a win to clinch the title.

So we don't choke when needing to win a league match for automatic promotions.

We definitely do on last day relegation matches and playoff finals though...

Very true. Our record of "vital last games" since 70-71 is as follows:

1971: Needed to beat Watford to get promotion. Did so 3-0
1981: Needed to draw with Walsall to stay up. Lost 0-1 and went down.
1984: Needed to beat Newport to have a chance of promotion. Did so and ultimately went up
1988: Needed to beat Bristol City by 2 goals to get through to the play off final and have a chance of staying up. Drew and were relegated.
1990: Needed to win at Leicester to go up. We did.
1994: Needed to draw at Chelsea to stay up. We lost and went down.
1997: Needed to beat Palace in the play off final to go up. We lost.
1998: Needed to avoid defeat at Sunderland to get to the play off final and a chance of promotion. We lost.
2003: Needed to beat Wolves in the play off final to go up. We lost.
2007: Needed a draw with Wigan to stay up. We lost and went down.
2009: Needed to beat Burnley in the play off final to go up. We lost.

Arguable cases are 1979 (when a win over Leicester would have given us a slight chance of staying up; we drew and went down, but would have gone down even if we had won), 1989 (when we needed to avoid a heavy defeat at Bristol City to go up - we lost 0-2 and went up) and 1993 (when we effectively needed to avoid a double figures defeat v Chelsea to stay up. We won 4-2).

In the clear cut cases our records is 9 failures and 3 successes in those vital last games :-(

Whilst no one would dare to vote for a play-off win, if DW achieved this unlikely scenario he would endear himself as the greatest ever Sheffield United manager of all time ever... ever!

But for the sake of all our collective nerves, let's hope it doesn't come down to that!

I really hope we don't end up in the play-offs. Our record is very poor. Three play-off finals reached, all lost and not a single goal scored by us.

In fact if you look at our record in all play-off matches we have hardly won any. A total of 13 matches played (if you count the old relegation games against Bristol City) and only two have been won in normal time (the 2-1 win against Sunderland and 1-0 against Preston). Our only other play-off match victory came against Nottingham Forest in extra time.
