Kev Gee 's other thread about memories of United etc. has got me reminiscent and curious about events before my time. So I thought i'd ask you to recall your account of any of the following pivotal moments in SUFC's history;
  • Deane/Fjortoft sold (1998)
  • Relegation to 1st Division (1994)
  • Promotion to Premiership (1990)
  • Keith Edwards scored 'that' goal (1984)
  • Relegation to the fourth division (1981)
  • Tony Currie was sold (1976)

1. At work
2. In my garden in the drizzle thinking it would be ok, turning the TV on at 4.45 and hearing Steve Ryder say "and we have just heard from Stamford Bridge that Chelsea are now 3-2 up and if the resulsts say the same that means Sheffield United are down"
3. On a camp site in France. I rang up my dad "they've lost" he said. "Whatttt!" I said. "Only kidding" he said.
4. If that's the one he got at Bolton, at my parents' house listening to Radio Sheffield
5. At the game :-(
6. No idea. I was 9 and only heard about it later.

Oh dear......

On the 'where you were' theme ,purely by coincidence I was in the same room on another continent doing the same thing when I found out about the sackings of Kevin Blackwell ,Micky Adams and Danny Wilson.

  • Deane/Fjortoft sold (1998) I wasn't long into my first ever job, walking through town on a lunch hour and saw the Star hoardings (which I didn't believe could be true).
  • Relegation to 1st Division (1994) Sat in the bog at my parent's house having heard Stein's goal come through, not wanting to come out.
  • Promotion to Premiership (1990) In my parent's lounge watching Final Score - got told off for chucking stuff about in celebration.
  • Keith Edwards scored 'that' goal (1984) Not a clue - too young.
  • Relegation to the fourth division (1981) Even younger!
  • Tony Currie was sold (1976) Not born yet...

1.At home fitting a new kitchen. Downed tools and went to the pub as couldn't concentrate on what I was doing I was that pissed off. Short sighted by the Board and cost us promotion(keeping one of them we would still have been promoted I reckon)

2.At Stamford Bridge sat in dismay when Stein hit that goal then trying to listen in to someone else's portable radio to see if anyone had scored a late goal to save us. We were bloody safe until 10 minutes to go, Mitch Ward had to go off injured I recall and all of a sudden, Hoddle started to get some space to deliver those passes. We were in the stand as the old away end had been knocked down

3. The main stand at Leicester (ticket courtesy of a workmate). Joined the 'disabled corner' after Wood scored, went on the pitch after Deano scored to get onto the away end. What a day that was and what a night down Woodseats (hic !!!)

4. On John Street Terrace (East). The abiding memory of that was him celebrating to the Kop before he stroking the ball home with the defender and keeper were scrambling to their feet. (I am assuming you are talking about the goal where he stepped over the ball to dummy the goal keep and defender (against Bristol Rovers ?). The best finisher I have ever seen play for us.

5. On the Kop. 16 at the time. The silence when Givens missed the penalty was eerie. Took me ages to get home that day. I really didn't think we would be relegated and I was almost stunned to tears at the final whistle.

6. I can just remember it being on the back of The Star and not being surprised as we had got relegated

Similar for me. I was 12 and in school. There were murmerings of it happening at lunchtime, but I'd obviously not seen anything that confirmed it until when walking home from school and I saw the dreaded Star hoarding with an ominous headline "Blades Strike Pair Depart" (or words to that effect). My heart sank.

Around the same time I got a smack for running up a telephone bill by using that 'Clubcall'. Anyone remember that?

Ha! At the time when United's player signings used to become prolonged epics (remember Brian Gayle's), I used ClubCall to find this stuff out first. You'd phone up and hope for an update, but usually be disappointed. But one day I discovered we'd got Roger Nilsen, who I natually thought would be the next big thing.

My parents weren't impressed either...

:)

I was referring to the 'Pele' goal vs. Bristol Rovers was it? I might have got the dates mixed up.

I'm always curious to hear about the 80's. My uncle always fills me in on parts, his hero at the time was Tony Kenworthy who apparently not only was a solid defender but a set piece specialist? He also says that our current state now is history repeating itself and it's going to get worse, but i'm refusing to be that cynical...yet...

Ah, I was at that game then. 14/4/84. Won 4-0 (Stancliffe, Garner, Edwards 2)

I went to virtually every home game in the 80's and it makes me feel EXTREMELY OLD when people says their dads told them all about it..

Kenworthy got a rather amazing for a defender 24 goals in all competitions in the two seasons 80-81 and 81-2. Most were pens and direct free kicks, plus the odd header from a corner. His 15 league goals in 81-82 is a club record for a defender.

Ok... I'll bite.

It should be "Where were you when..."

I assume that is what Raul was referring to.

1. No idea. Too young to care.
2. No idea. Too young to care.
3. No idea. Too young to have any concept of football.
4. Wasn't born.
5. Wasn't born.
6. Wasn't born.

That was easy.

1. Found out when looking at Ceefax when coming home from work
2. Playing in a cricket match against Grimesthorpe at Castledyke. Wendy fans from the Grimesthorpe team cheered when they heard the results from my car radio after my team had finished batting for 40 overs
3. In the side stand at Filbert Street. My dad had a very painful ear infection that day and I was holding him making sure that the fans will not knock him over (losing balance made it more painful for him) when running to invade the pitch every time we scored
4. In the old John Street Stand
5. playing in a 6 a side tournament at Manchester (I thought the Blades had about 5% chance of going down) and I found out when going to get the Pink final in the City Centre (accompanying me was a Wendy fan who played in the same 6 a side team as me!)
6 At my boarding school. It was never a shock as he wanted to leave us since handing in two or three transfer requests during the season

  • Keith Edwards scored 'that' goal (1984) Behind the goal dodging bricks from Bolton's boys
  • Relegation to the fourth division (1981) Stunned on the Kop
  • Tony Currie was sold (1976) Don't really remember

1. In the Nurses residence on my University placement. Flicked on the teletext. Face palmed...
2. Doing my paper round listening to Radio Pig, praying for a late Blackburn winner.
3. Watching the vide printer
4. At home most likely
5. Ditto
6. In my mothers tummy.

  • Deane/Fjortoft sold (1998) - Throwing morning paper into a bin in Normanton because of a little article that said we were about to sell them both. Listened to RS with growing disbelief as the unbelievable came true
  • Relegation to 1st Division (1994) - In Swanage with a laydee listening to the results coming in and working out by process of elimination the bad news.
  • Promotion to Premiership (1990) - Burning burgers and dropping them on the carpet tiles which had been put down approx 7 days earlier
  • Keith Edwards scored 'that' goal (1984)
  • Relegation to the fourth division (1981) - Watching Sunderland win 1-0 at Anfield to stay up on the final day. Stan Cummings I think.
  • Tony Currie was sold (1976) - He didn't play for Liverpool so simply didnt exist.

Fixed. Sorry raul xxxxxx

I think so, couldn't find anything on youtube?

•Deane/Fjortoft sold (1998) - found out of Ceefax when I got home from work. That night was the closest I've ever come to turning my back on United
•Relegation to 1st Division (1994) - I was there. Worst of all our relegations.
•Promotion to Premiership (1990) - at home, sadly
•Keith Edwards scored 'that' goal (1984) - I was there. Remember it as if it were yesterday.
•Relegation to the fourth division (1981) - at home
•Tony Currie was sold (1976) - too young to remember

Here's Pele

Edwards' goal wasn't televised. Most games weren't in that Jurassic era :)

Had he scored that would have been the greatest Pele moment. Instead, this is:

Pele was a great player, no doubt about it, but everything I've seen of him since he stopped playing says that he is an utter twat.

•Deane/Fjortoft sold (1998) Dunno, at work in Mayfair, pissed off.
•Relegation to 1st Division (1994) At the sodding game
•Promotion to Premiership (1990) I was a student in Oxford
•Keith Edwards scored 'that' goal (1984) At the game
•Relegation to the fourth division (1981) At home in Sheffield
•Tony Currie was sold (1976) Living in Cardiff and neither registering or caring

I came along just too late to really care about TC. His off the pitch activities have hardly enamoured him to me either and I have a (genuinely) higher regard for Bob Booker - a player I have actually met (I haven't met many, I haven't tried to). I was there that night at Mansfield.

1. At home
2. Golf club, surrounded by part time wednesday fans who hadn't been to Hillsborough that day. Not pleasant!
3. What a day, May 5th 1990, I was there, on the pitch at the end, shook Paul Woolhouses hand and then learnt SWFC were down. If I could re-live one day of my life.....
4. I assume this was Edwards "Pele" goal against Bristol Rovers? On the kop.
5. Living in the north east.
6. Living down south, my Dad had informed me prior to going to school. The teacher asked me why I was crying (I was 12) and didn't really understand when I replied "United have sold Tony Currie" A sadness etched into my memory!

  • Deane/Fjortoft sold (1998) Can't remember where I was but I threw my season ticket away with about 4 months of the season left.
  • Relegation to 1st Division (1994) Upper tier in Chelsea's Meccano stand, totally pissed with a couple of mates. Good punch-up outside the ground. Eventually back in Social Club around 10 and the most pissed I've ever been on a matchday.
  • Promotion to Premiership (1990) Upper tier at Filbert Street with around 12k Blades in the ground. Then heard the pigs had been relegated.Sheer ecstasy.
  • Keith Edwards scored 'that' goal (1984) Not sure which 'that' goal was but if it was Bolton away, I was pacing in the garden with a bottle of whiskey.
  • Relegation to the fourth division (1981) Upper tier (see a pattern emerging here?) of Bramall Lane with mi dad. Temporarily elated when a rumour swept the ground (including thousands who'd invaded the pitch) that some other results had gone our way. Then my dad - who was in North Africa in WW2 - told me 'Don't believe it. I've seen entire armies run away on the strength of a rumour.' He was, as ever, right.
  • Tony Currie was sold (1976) By this time, I'd been anesthetised by Jones, Birchenall etc. Don't know where I was but remember 'Don't go, Tony' sprayed on the wall outside John Street for years.
