That sounds similar to what I get in my lower back, 3-5 days to recover usually for me as well, with hot and cold packs on it and Naproxen. My doctor said the muscles go into spasm to protect you from summat - in my case I think it's a slipped disc that periodically plays up and presses on one of the main nerves.

In Brooksy's case if there's an underlying shoulder problem the spasms might be higher in his back.
Do you get any warning signs before it happens? I don't get any signs whatsoever, which is most annoying!

Sometimes I feel a bit of a warning twinge but usually not. Tends to come out of nowhere like yours. Just bending slightly triggers it, last time I was putting my socks on.

When it happens I have found it best to sit in a chair, upright (with the tilt-back on the chair locked off), with a pillow behind me and with a cold pack on for about half an hour followed by a hot water bottle on it for about an hour - this seems to relax the muscles. I take naproxen, which I have on prescription, alternated with co-codamol of it's really bad (as advised by the doctor, but got to watch it with those, they sometimes make me feel dizziy and sick), and then it's 3-5 days to recover till the next one.

Think you said twice a year? Last time mine went was in February, time before that the previous March and twice in the December before that. I can go a couple of years or more without one, but it seems to be getting a bit more often lately.

Putting heat on it is the worse thing you can do. The pain is due to inflammation and ice is the remedy. Any doctor will tell you this.

I once had a spasm due to the wind catching the door and slamming it shut. The shudder I got set me off. Sames as you, the frequency of the attacks was getting shorter and shorter and for more and more trivial reasons. I ended up with spinal surgery and taking the offending disc out. Good luck, you've got my sympathies.

Sounds similar to myself. 2 year ago had pains down my leg & ended up having an 8 hour spinal fusion!! Even then didn’t clear everything up & still use lidocaine patches to ease the pain.

In short, Brooks not playing has fuck all to do with hiding him til the end of the season.

Just going off my own doctor's advice - she said heat was good for relaxing muscles. I know for some injuries, like sprains where there is swelling and fluid, it's not advised in the early stages.

NHS says "use hot or cold compression packs for short-term relief" https://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Back-pain/

So has the surgery cured it?

On balance yes. I no longer get the excruciating pain you experience after a spasm but the location of the fusion (lower back) has reduced my mobility a bit.

I'd check the advice on applying heat with the specialist if you are seeing one.

Not seeing a specialist at this stage. If it gets worse or more frequent I will, but for now I'm managing.

On https://www.spine-health.com/blog/should-i-use-ice-or-heat-my-lower-back-pain it does back up what you say - ice for first 24-48 hours as well so cheers for that info, I will try that next time.

Look, is someone going to nip round to Bigfoot Brook's gaff and sort his back out or not? :)
