When is it time for the tennis balls?

I'm guessing you didn't see those years.

They are still the best for me in my time but they can't be used as a comparison for today.

The players we had and the methods we used simply wouldn't work today. Or should I say, wouldn't be allowed.
You're spot on there Dav. We knocked it down the channels to (usually) Deano who would stride forward and knock it into the box where the midfield would pile in and scrap for every loose or second ball. We had some terriers who would put in some tasty tackles , but todays refs would call most tackles as fouls. Our delivery from free kicks and corners were brilliant and would cause chaos in the box but again our zest to get to the ball first would again be deemed as fouling. The game has gone soft. Here's some typical, no nonsense stuff from the lads back then.....

Some soft shite on here, loved to know how everyone would have been that first year in top flight under bassett when we didnt win game until christmas and were getting beat every week. Might be the same this season but i dont doubt that they're trying out there, they're just not good enough, that's not their fault.

No point risking financial future of the club at a tilt at staying up. lets be honest the prem is shite. Its a closed shop at the top end, you cant break in without billions or being state sponsored. VAR means you cant get away with roughing up teams or scoring the odd offside goal here or there, or mcburnie smashing someone at far post and getting away with it.

The sooner the authorities get on with organising a european (world??) super league (which is going to happen without a shadow of doubt) then most football leagues can reset themselves and there can be meaningful competition. Top levels in most of the major leagues are just dull as anything in terms of a competition.

I went to virtually every match that season. I remember that Forest win was celebrated like we'd stayed up on the last match of the season.
However to be honest we weren't that bad that season, even though it took ages to find our first win, most matches were evenly matched, the opposite just finished their chances better, many thought we were slightly unlucky and not a single person ever thought we could go all season without a win.

Now let's compare that Bassett season with this season, there's no comparison.
This team is so far below the standard of the opposition that based on general performance people are seriously thinking we won't win a single game.

So it's wrong to compare us to Man City, Arsenal or even Wolves.
Instead people should be comparing us to some of the worse sides that have even been promoted from the Championship,
like Swindon, Blackpool, even Daniel Farkes Norwich. We've spent £60 million on targets identified by Hecky and brought in £30 million from sales.

However Blackpool spent nothing, where their owner Oyston literally took the money and run, then there's Daniel Fawkes Norwich who spent only £500K. Those teams competed much better than us and spent far less. Of course Hecky has valid excuses, the injury list is shockingly bad but even taking all the valid excuses into account, still think he's underperforming with what he has.

Then there's Luton from this season who have spent only £20 million. Try to watch some of their games and you'll see there's a massive different between them and us regards general play and how competitive they are. They remind me of the Warncock/ Basset teams, they lack quality but they're a tough team to play against, their tactics always appear to try and win and they have attacks and have shots.

See your point about how the same clubs seem to dominates, making the competition dull but hasn't this been the case for decades?
I suppose the real solution is to use a draft system like they do in US sports but then the quality at the top diminishes. It's the strength of our super clubs and the way we always dominate Europe that helps make the PL the most attractive, most watched league in the world.

About 89/90 onwards I can remember.

Do you disagree with “Under Bassett we still put it about and showed some fight and desire.” then?
Putting it about like we did in those days hasn't been either remotely successful or allowed for years.

Stoke maybe the last to get somewhere playing like that.

Fight and desire gets shown by any team winning games at this level.

Whilst we had some quality individual players in the early 90s, what the likes of Jones, Whitehurst, Bradshaw, Hartfield, Gayle et al got away with then by getting in the faces of better teams, is half a lifetime away and not a style that could be replicated today.

stegosaurus.

Bit of a myth that we dominate Europe...since the turn of century our 'super clubs' have won the Champions League 6 times (Lpool twice, chelsea twice, Manchester clubs one each) and 4 times won the europa league (chelsea twice, Man U and LPool)...spanish teams have won CL 11 times and Europa 12 in that time.

Its marketing that makes it the most watched league.
