What Sammon Brings

Cressy was more than good enough as a partner for Evans.

cressy was the pick of the bunch but ultimately wasn't good enough to help us achieve promotion. 27 goals in 124 games isn't bad but at a goal every 4.5 games it isn't the sign of a promotion winning strikers tally, even if he's playing second fiddle to someone else. All about opinions of course

Had Ched not been sent to prison it would have been the goal tally of a promotion winning striker. But it's rare you get a player like Ched at our level so you usually need a couple of scorers. Cressy was right man at the right time, almost.

Can see what your saying and technically speaking you are right. However it was more down to Ched than what Cressy contributed. Not disrespecting him but we probably would have scraped a play off spot at best if Ched had been a "run of the mill" 20 a season man

Agree. Cressy was the perfect partner for Ched but wouldn't necessarily have been so for someone else. Although I bet Billy would have appreciated his leg work.

But how many teams have two strikers in the same 11 who both score consistently? We had Deane and Agana all those years ago but more often, one provides a platform for the other to thrive. Evans and Cresswell being a prime example. Whether Sammon is good enough at that role is one debate. But to just stick another goal poacher against Sharp is not forced to work if the styles don’t compliment each other.

O Grady has never been prolific but would be excellent for this level if we could get him back in my opinion.

Fair point but we're never going to get OGrady ....we're more likely to go for Paul OGrady knowing our scouting prowess !!

It shouldn't be hard though to find a big strong striker who doesn't have a touch like a JCB and CAN score goals, to partner Sharp or Done upfront, at this level.

If he'd kept it in his trousers we would have been where the fu**ing piggy ladyboy scum are now !!! :(

The proposition was he moves regularly from club to club.

The stats do not support that imo.
TBF, the stats on Wikipedia show that, since 2005, Sammon has played for 8 different clubs (including loans).

Given that this is a ten year period, that would mean that Sammon has played for 8 clubs in 10 years, an average of 1.25 years per club.

This supports the idea that he starts off well, then tails off IMO or he would have played longer at a club/not had as many loans (its not as if the loans were to get him experience as a youngster, he would have been 28/29). It also supports the proposition that "he moves regularly from club to club" as once every 1.25 years on average seems pretty regular.

All that said, I like Sammon. He isn't the goal-scorer we crave, nor is he that good in the air, but I do think that he gives us a different dimension when playing. He occupies defenders which is useful in itself (particularly if they have not seen his aerial "prowess" first-hand before!) and for me is a decent squad player at this level.

No, he was injured (the same reason we didn't sell Beattie in the summer of 2008).
Well it depends how long before the start but yes, I remember now he didn't play the first few games.

He was out until after the transfer window had closed, and I'm not 100% sure but I think he was out all summer too and missed pre season.

Sounds about right but it's a long time ago now and my memory isn't what it used to be.

You say that but how many have we seen in the 5 years we’ve been here?

Assombalonga
O Grady
Kermmogant
Clarke (but rumoured attitude problem)

I wanted us to sign Craig Davies in the summer as I think he’s good for this level but he’s struggling to get in Wigan’s team I think. Matt Smith would be decent but again, not great with a ball at his feet and don’t know whether we could get him.

Struggling to think of anyone else and those two are playing in the championsip now. I think thse players are actually few and far between at this level and the Porters, Sammons, HIgdons of this world are more what most League 1 clubs have (hence Higdon and Porter both playing for other league 1 clubs this season). I hope we can do better than Sammon but I think better target men than him are few and far between at this level.

What Sammon brings... nothing we couldn't get from someone for a fraction of the 8k per week we're reportedly wasting on him.

He doesn't hold the ball up. He either fails to contest the header, doesn't bother to get to the ball, plays a shit pass or gets tackled.

12k per week. Same as Hammond.

It goes through me thinking about a player like him earning that much. When we're the ones paying it that makes it even worse. We never, ever learn. We forced out the likes of Quinn to get them off the wage bill only to ultimately start paying inferior players even more.

It's amazing how some of these players get the contracts they do. No wonder Sammon looks like he hasn't got a care in the world every time he's on the pitch. He'll be made for life and he's just seeing out the last year of a contract he knows he'll never get near to ever again.

Not sure whats more worrying, that Maxster believes he has access to the clubs wage details, or Ricky believing him.

Don't have the facts at my fingertips but from memory I took his stats from when he crossed the water and arrived at Kilmarnock. After Killy he had two clubs - though the season long loan at Ipswich and now us were not in the stats

Not sure what it all means but my main point is he's a decent player, has been a very good player for us - and I think if (what I see as) the senseless ridicule continues it could cost us as no-one can do the job he does.

To be fair it's not at all difficult to believe is it?

I take your point that they're not "growing on trees " but most other Clubs in this agricultural division have a better striker than Sammon.

Mind you ....... it could be that our "colander like defence" makes them seem better than they actually are ......

Bloody hell. Had to go to deepest page 8 to resurrect this thread.

Anyway I thought Sammon looked pretty decent on the highlights: involved in all our play that made it into the package.

Hope he carries on this form. An important player if we want promotion.

Surely you know he's rubbish WHF?

The FFI (Football Forum Intelligentsia) have passed judgement.........o_O

He is bobbar.

He is not important for any promotion push,

There is a reason why his arse has been keeping the bench warm for much of the last 2 or 3 months.

Question: was you one of the select few that thought Higdon would come good ?

If so, for Higdon read Sammon. Will see out the remainder of his loan, mostly on the bench, and that will be that !

He still hoofs it over the bar too much or misses his headers, but it was an improvement, but that's not saying much!

I can't help feeling you've gone all "barney" on the one. :)

Connor Sammon would be a good signing for half the clubs in this league. However, his signing makes no sense for us. He's not good enough as a target man and he has no pace so playing with Sharp is a bit aimless. We don;t play two wingers (and often not one) so he doesn't get the kind of service he would need.

Baffling signing.
