I suppose it has been touched upon on other threads but what happens next?

Johnson - never got close and when he did he was an obvious weak link. Clearly won't take him back.

Henderson - pretty obvious all parties are Keen to make this happen. He won't play vs Man U, I assume. Are we fine with Simon Moore stepping in or do we want better depth?

Dowell - leaves with a great anthem to his name but I can't say we really saw the best of him. I'd like to think in that role you night get someone who imposes themselves more on the game. I don't think I would extend this one.

Hogan - scored a couple of important goals. My main concern would be his injury record and how much Villa would still want for him. I'm not convinced you'd get a good return on your money.

Madine - difficult one I'd say. He'd be useful to Cardiff coming down. I can see Wilder quite liking to have his disruptive ability in the squad and has clearly enjoyed his time. I just wonder if you are serious about tackling the PL, whether signing a guy who a team likely to be relegated deemed not good enough for their squad is the way to go. Similar to Hogan, how much would Cardiff want? He's not done enough since signing for Cardiff to retain the 6m value. 3m would be ok. 4m feels a bit pricey already.

In summary:
Release - Johnson, Hogan, Dowell
Retain - Henderson
Think long and hard and see how the window pans out - Madine

Wilder has said he's already had/in talks with Madine about next season, the same with Henderson, so you might aswell forget those 2, they should be here next season.

Madine would be good on another years loan as he won’t count against the 2 premier league loans we are allowed (assuming Cardiff are relegated)

Not bothered about Hogan or Dowell personally. Dowell maybe if we can get him on the cheap as he has potential

Forgot about Johnson but I think we can safely say he has run his race

I'd sign Dowell if it's something Everton would consider but given we're only allowed 2 loans from our fellow Premier League clubs, we need to use those spots very carefully - there's always the odd gem that's loaned out from the top 6 and we're now firmly in that market.

One drawback of being in the PL is that we are only allowed two loans from other PL clubs, and only one from any one club.

Presuming that Henderson is one, how about the others?

Johnson: No way. We will need another left wing back to cover/push Stevens

Dowell: He's been handy for his time here, and his goal against West Bromwich Albion was my favourite of the season. Trouble is he's not quite good enough for PL and we need better to use a loan on, and not quite good enough to spend north of 7 million which is what I presume he'd cost

Madine: Similar to Dowell except will be a bit cheaper although Cardiff will want to recoup at least half of the 6 million they spent on him. Not good enough for another loan, can we get a better target man than him? I'd hope so, if not I hope we go back for him

Hogan: Again falls in a similar bracket to the others. Villa spent 12 million so will want to recoup that, although if promoted that might change and they'd be happy to write it off to some extent. Yet they would be our rivals in the PL. Useful player but doesn't improve a lot on what we have and spending millions on a transfer or use up a loan doesn't seem worth it. I know he's played a bit recently but he's not even first choice at the moment.

Difficult decisions but nice to have of course!

As for the other loan (can't be from Man U), I'd look at the likes of Mount, Bowen, Abraham, Guendouzi, Targett, Reece James etc

I'd keep Henderson and return all of the others, they simply haven't been quite good enough.

The exception to that is Dowell, if he can show that he can take control of a game, play with ownership and confidence then I'd have him. He's got bags of ability, but I wanted him to be like Mount or Wilson at Derby in terms of maturity and controlling games.

Hogan’s an unpredictable one. I don’t think he’s done enough to be kept, but Wilder spent the better part of two seasons trying to get him in, so you might think he’d be more inclined to keep him on. But at the same time Wilder spent an absolute age getting Leonard in, and more than one window looking at Holmes, before binning them relatively quickly.

I’m pretty sure either Wilder or Warnock are on record at the time Madine signed saying there was a fee agreed to make it permanent if all went to plan. I don’t think another loan for him makes sense for Cardiff – think they either play him or sell him.

Premier league rules state that you can only loan two players from the same association at any one time. So that’s two domestic loans total.
So, if you keep Madine and Henderson for example, that’s it for the domestic loan market.

Madine isn't good enough for the Prem (or Sheff United), in the same way I was never good enough for that ginger nut Tom Cruise used to bang, whose name escapes me. I'm not crying and nobody cried for me let him go he'll be alright.

Send all loan players back and hopefully have Hendo back next year.

You can't loan 2 players from the same club, so Mctominay from Man U (as has been suggested by others) is a complete non starter.

The 2nd loan player we are allowed should a player who will go straight into the first team. If Villa don't go up and the lad was up for the challenge, then go and get Abraham.

We are only allowed 2 prem loans - both HAVE to be seen as starters in game one next season.

Look at United's team that finished the season, and would Hogan have started if Billy had been fit.

For me we start again with loans - ones that are suitable for the Premier league, not the Championship.

Personally I’d like only Henderson to come back-rather it permanently but season loan is ok. As for the rest , I thank for their contributions and wish them well but no return!

Re Madine deemed not good enough for MR Warnock’s liking, one or two of our lads were not wanted by their former clubs. They came to us and the Wilder / Knill magic did the rest. For me Madine should stay

Out of interest - does Ben Woodburn get a Promotion medal?

UTB

Do they get medals for 2nd? I know we had them for the 2006 promotion, but kind of assumed we made those ourselves along with the plate we made and then presented to ourselves.

Alan Wright, aloft with the champagne, has one and I can’t remember him featuring (he was apparently involved in 9 games).

George Long is pictured wearing one in our League 1 title photo and didn’t feature at all once Moore was signed.

So yes I imagine everyone that played gets one.

If we loan a player from the championship does that count towards the quota?

Is it two domestic loans allowed only or two Premier League loans?

Can see Cardiff wanting to use Madine next year. With parachute payments, I doubt they would be under any pressure to sell, at least not next season. So the only way someone signs Madine is if they pay what Cardiff did or near to it. That fee was daft anyway.

His attitude has pleasantly surprised me and no doubt he’s grown on me; he’s definitely contributed to whats happened. But for what Cardiff would demand, I’d be looking to invest it elsewhere. Dont forget, GM is 28 now; hardly an up and comer.

For me, neither have been good enough at this level and are unproven at the level above, and therefore don't cut it.

Re Dowell - I wonder if the time on the ball afforded in the Premiership might see him develop as a player. He’s got the potential but needs to impose himself on games.

Unfortunately Wilder won’t want to risk a sizeable transfer fee on finding this out, a loan is a non-starter given the loan rules. I expect it’s another season in the Championship for him, maybe somewhere like Preston.

McGoldrick wasn’t offered a contract at Ipswich, so I wouldn’t put too much into the “they weren’t good enough at their previous club”
Our squad lacked physicality and it also lacked paced.

So for our particular team both Madine and Hogan gave us something we didn’t have before.
It all depends what other transfers we can bring in, if we can bring in other strikers with physicality and/ or pace then Madine and Hogan probably won’t be needed, much depends on the price and salary demands, think both would mainly be sub with occasional starts.

Dowell is talented and could go either way, if the price is right I’d probably take the risk with him.

I see similarities between Kieran Dowell and David Brooks. Both only 21, I think Brooks is the greater talent, but they're both clearly good with the ball at their feet running forward, particularly on the counter, while being a little too mercurial for the number 10 role with us. In general, and with some exceptions, we need a ten who likes to get on the ball and is always showing for it. That's why over the past two years despite trying different options Wilder has always gone back to Duffy. It turned out Brooks' best position for us was actually playing off the striker. And that could well be the case for Dowell.

I guess the question is whether Wilder embraces that and sees a future for Dowell in that role off the striker, or if Dowell will in time be able to play in that advanced midfield role for us. To help answer that question, if you think about it, where would Brooks be playing for us now?

For me, I think Dowell is an excellent option, particularly if we can get him at a decent price. But we'd need to sign someone for that 10 role as I don't think you can rely on Dowell. So the price would need to be right.

Didsy wasn’t offered a contract for financial reasons. McCarthy recommended him to Wilder.

I think Madine offers a good Plan B option and I'd therefore be included to sign him if the fee is sensible (if he'd be happy with that). That is unless any of the other incomings offer's Madine's particular strengths (physical presence, aerial ability, hold-up ability etc.) McBurnie is probably the closest match from the names mentioned so far.

I think Utd will probably sign better than Hogan - possibly Robinson

Johnson will obviously return to M'boro and probably another Champ loan next season.

Dowell is an interesting one - not quite good or consistent enough to play top-end Champ at the moment, especially in the #10 position. I thought his best game was actually at LWB. I don't think he's worth burning the 2nd Prem loan on (unless Everton are willing to let him go relatively cheaply) so suspect he'll return.

Henderson - sounds like another season on loan is close to being wrapped up, which is a good thing. He'll have learned a lot from last season and already looks a better player than when he joined. Next year will be another stretch for him, which will do him good.

For the second Prem loan (assuming Henderson will be the other), Abraham would be my preference if that is an viable option. If not, a quick, mobile RCB (to cover Egan's and JOC's lack of pace) would be my choice - James, Holgate, Adarabioyo are options

Did you read my mind with this !

Think the 2nd loan, if not Abraham (for what ever reason) has to be a CF to go straight in the team though.

I like Maupay, but if he is to cost £25m, he is surely out of our reach, so a loan player up top becomes paramount. The question, if not Abraham, then who?

edit: I'd try and get Bowen on a buy + sell on for Hull.

Agree that our signings need to be quality not quantity. Players that can go straight into the 1st team.

The slight issue though is that Wilder has made it clear he will focus as much on character as he will talent.
He won’t accept mercenaries, big time Charlie’s and selfish players, this rules our quite a lot of players.

He’ll only bring in players who show an interest in coming here to give everything to SU.
So that might rule out certain players. Can’t imagine Maupay being massively desperate to leave London to come to SU.
Of course if we triple his wages he might be persuaded but don’t believe CW wants players that are more interested in salary.

When we came up from league 1, Wilder bought the best players from league 1. So it’s natural to believe that most of the Summer signings will be the best players from the Championship, hungry players keen to improve and impress in the PL.
Wouldn’t surprise me if he goes for Che Adams and Joao.
