Starting from 5 mins 36 secs in the below link it looks like Alan Woodward had scored a goal at the Lane End but I am not sure who were the opponents and what date it was. The Green Un headline says "WOODY WINNER OWLS ARE HELD". I think the goal might be the 2nd of the 5 goals against Arsenal in Sept 1973 because it fits the description of the goal as reported in the Morning Telegraph in the next day "In the ninth minute Currie insolently beat Storey but was brought down on the edge of the penalty area. Looking up, United's superstar slipped his free kick back for Woodward to whip his right foot shot along the ground, through the packed defence and into the corner of the net.".

The match was played on the Tuesday night and the Green Un Headline doesnt make sense. The Green Un batch could be back copies from 30th Sept 1972 (we beat Man U with a last minute penalty by Woody and Wendy drew 1-1 at Carlisle on the same day) and the filming of the Green Un arrival at Woodseats Hotel pub were staged during the week rather than on a Saturday evening.

Didn't Southampton and possibly Sunderland have that yellow shirt as a second kit in those days?

It does look like Arsenal, but for a Tuesday evening in September (Sept 4th apparently), there's a lot of daylight, so I'm a bit unsure. I think the scene in the pub must've been filmed a few weeks later.

Southampton yes but none of the goals at the Lane End were the same as in the video. Sunderland were in the 2nd division from 1970 until 1976

The first 4 goals against Arsenal were scored in the first 17 mins and the kick off was 7.30 pm. The sun sets at about 8pm

That makes sense then, I think it is Arsenal. I reckon you're right about the Green Un headline - the scene in the pub must've been filmed at a later date.

Hi new member here, think the match was v Arsenal on the 4th sept 1973. The first goals were early & in daylight & the green un was probably from the Saturday before, woodys winner at Chelsea & Wednesday drew at home.

Have a look at the red and white striped shirt on the bloke who comes through the door at 8:04. Check out the collar, thats the 1974-1975 kit. That season and that season only.

Could it have been a game against Derby? They played in yellow away shirts in the 1970s.

This is true. I was outside on the kop steps that night when the first one went in. My sisters were gassing to their mate and I missed it. It was pretty dark (but not completely) at that time.

IIRC pretty sure the first four went in at the kop end.

We wore that shirt in 1973-74 and in 1974-75. See your 1973-74 video

The first four goals were definitely scored at the Lane End

It's definitely the 5-0 Arsenal game. If you go through the relevant footage frame by frame you can see that it's an evening game - the sun is low and setting. And you can see Alan Ball in the centre of the goalmouth watching the ball go past which fits in with the photograph on the programme cover reproduced by Silent.

And it was definitely at the Bramall Lane end (the "Upper Tier" were up and down like a bride's nightie in the early stages). I wouldn't have needed to see the photo or the footage to remember that as I have a crystal-clear recollection of Currie's goal, fittingly the best of the game, smashed in from just outside the box. I was on the Kop and directly behind it as it flew past Bob Wilson and nearly broke the back of the net. As we all know, a good dive by the keeper makes a long-range goal look all the better and I have to say Wilson made a lovely shape in mid-air as it rocketed by.

Currie was on fire that night. That Morning Telegraph report talks of him "insolently" beating Storey before being brought down by him for the free kick. Storey was an England regular at the time but making him look ordinary was just a routine thing for TC in those days. As for "United's superstar," he was the best player in the country back then. It was like having God pulling the strings in midfield.

If my memory serves me right that was the night TC sat on the ball as a pisstake. Later in the season or season after they beat us 5-0 at Highbury, in the cup I think, and Alan Ball returned the compliment.

No Alan Ball did it first in the January 1972 home game in which we lost 5-0, TC returned the compliment in Sept 1973. Ball left for Southampton before that 5-0 FA Cup defeat in 1978

Cheers Silent, I remebered they had both done it but not which way round. When these old pics and questions turn up I like to try and remember as opposed to looking things up. It's good for the brain(I think).

I was at that game, Their goalkeeper, Bob Wilson, used to be a TV pundit in that era doing game analysis. I recollect a wag on the Kop repeating a regularTV catchphrase at the top of his voice "talk us through those 5 Bob".

I remember TC sitting on the ball. I was viewing from the John Street Stand. I haven't a clue who I was with. That bit is concerning me. Marbles am rapidly I losing my.

Is that Les Tibbott on the far left and Paul Garner on the right? John Holmes in the middle? The referees obviously a bastard, whoever he is
