........and at the opposite end of the spectrum, you've absolutely nailed it.Problem has not been the introduction of seating into standing areas but how some clubs like ours have chosen to allocate it.
If at the end of each season folk renew their ST for the same seat next season and do this for decades that area gradually and eventually becomes like a petrified forrest full of nice old timers in the best and most central seats. Great reward for them and their loyalty but not necessarily great for the atmosphere in the long term.
Any newcomers or younger people then wishing to join this party realise to fit in they have to be fragmented and fit in round the outside or run the wrath of sitting in odd seats inbetween in "Uncle John's old seat" and be told each match "he sat there from 1958 to 2008 don't you know and you're sitting in his seat". I've done it a few times, its like a time warp, no thanks.
When it was all standing on the kop and thereby unallocated, as people got older they'd migrate from the lively noisier back/centre heart of the kop to the margins where it was quieter (or into seats) and younger noisier people would naturally replace them in the kop centre thus keeping it alive. I suspect this doesn't happen now, people just renew their ST for the same old seat each season and just stay put until they can't go to games anymore and with it the heart of the kop and all around it gradually ages and dies.
A natural but entirely predictable and preventable death in my view. Yes people can have allocated ST seating in many areas, but not in a few critcal areas if we want to keep the atmosphere alive IMO.

What like Derek Temples goal in 66 Cup final ?I'll never forget the day the pigs were 3-0 up against Derby and Derby scored 3 late goals, the 3rd goal on the scoreboard was celebrated like a cup final goal !
At the risk of offending a few (sorry), but "being too nervous to sing because we might fuck it up" is quite possibly the most lame excuse imaginable for not getting behind the team.........

Without doubt a rowdy atmosphere has a baring on results. Such a shame that we can't create one.It doesnt even make sense, in its own terms.
1. Having a good shout and sing is a pretty good way to expend nervous energy.
2. It might just help the team to not fuck it up, especially as this generation has no history of fucking it up.

As always, there are a number of factors. Little excitement about the opposition is a big one.
The one thing we could affect is creating an unreserved seating section at the back of the kop. Right now there are 2 unofficial "singing sections" that regularly cancel each other out.

Thanks and maybe a related question is "how much do we want a better atmosphere ?" Personally I think a cracking atmosphere is maybe worth 10 to 15 points a season in terms of boosting morale for our team, intimidating the opposition and influencing referees. Be interested to know what others think. We can't complain if refs allow themselves to be swayed when away from home if we don't do the same at home. How many away league 1 teams would go all out to win at an intimidating BDTBL ?........and at the opposite end of the spectrum, you've absolutely nailed it.
