What a Goal From Adams

Analysis of Swindon's goals:
1- Worldy...not a lot we could do
2- Where are the covering defenders.....Alcock? Basham? Ball watching
3- Alcock....don't lose you're man!!!
4- Stonewall penaltiy....not a lot can do. Needless challenge by Howard
5- Whatever you do Craig, don't let him inside....push him wide....get closer.

I know their first was a good strike but you should never head a ball from a cross into the air for it to drop right on the edge of the box, in the centre, it should either have some distance on it or it should be cleared for a corner and take safety first, schoolboy shit.

I like Harris, he's really grown on me but last night he was BOLLOCKS!

He has been scared of Byrne over both matches and given him far too much respect. All he had to do was nail the tosser with a solid tackle once or twice so Byrne had something to think about.

fact remains with a competent/honest ref we would have made the final
thought we were at times incompetent but Cheated out of a lead from the1st leg

Alcock isn't a center half. He wins a lot of headers for his size, tries really hard and battles but he's just not a central defender.
Harris has grown on me but is horribly inconsistent.
Freeman NEVER stops crosses coming in which drives me crazy.
McCleverley isn't just the slowest man on the planet but his positional sense ie getting goal fecking side- is abysmal.

Other than Brayford I think we need 3 new defenders

This just isn't possible in the modern game - and that's a welcome development.

Dead right. MF didn't pick Gladwin up but it shouldn't have come to that - out for a corner was the right decision. The same applies for most of the goals - bad decisions and over-elaboration. Harris should have put the ball out instead of the weak header into Byrne's path on the second goal. Freeman miscontrolled trying to be too fancy for the third ( he didn't have anyone behind him and could have let it run out to the wing) Either clear it or let it run.

Byrne had a field day at RWB but I don't think it was just down to Harris having a mare - the way the defence was set up left him twixt and between too often. I don't think Alcock was our worst defender, McEveley and Harris vied for that dubious honour. 5th goal looks down to Alcock but in reality MCEveley lost his man at the half way line and had just about made our box when the goal went in. Basham at fault as well as, having got back, he should have gone to cover Alcock but went non-goal side of the attacker. Woeful.

Steady on. A lot of these are playing out of position or without cover and in Division 3. There's good and bad. "Negative" Nigel seems to actually prefer defenders who are good on the ball sometimes at the expense of out and out defensive capability. Bob and even McEveley are great on the ball.

Fwiw maybe need a RB because of what you said about not stopping crosses but that may be tactical(!) as we just leave their players with so much space - we do it on the other side as well.

Bob, McEveley, Kennedy (hopefully), CH, CH, the Beard (on one leg), Freeman, +1 is that too many? There's a better thread on this elsewhere I think but I've started so I'll finish.

I'd probably keep Bob, but you can't make mistakes like last night if you want to get promoted. As for Jay, surely he'd be found out just as much in any other position. Bad positioning added with zero pace is a nasty combo for a defender to have. He is quite good on the ball but if he costs us a goal or two every game what's the point in being confident in possession?
I just wonder how hard we tried to keep Harry on loan for the rest of the season.

Was that where that nippy lad ran through? Foulkes Jr Sr pointed out that Bash came across to double up but just mysteriously ran round the back of him. Bizarre.
I noticed that.. What Bash was thinking I don't know, all he had to do was back Alcock up and run in behind him and the lad wouldn't have scored.
Great Goal by Adams though...He should have done better just before that when he was in the box and needed to shoot, but took to long and wasted the chance, but more than made up for it.

Can still tackle cleanly and get the ball. Harris seemed scared to make any kind of tackle and just kept backing off him.

(Never once coached defending in three years of junior football but the little I did read was Delay, Deny, Destroy.)

Defending isn't about tackling(?!), that's often a last resort. Delay till back up arrives, basically. If no back up arrives you're in trouble.

If Bob had tried tackling Byrne would've just skipped round him and been clean through.

The way I see it he shouldn't've been left 1v1 - but that was the price we paid for attacking.

This was one of the reasons it was 5-5.

Generally I don't think there's much point analysing the goals specifically. It was more we'll do our best at defending but we're really going to concentrate on attacking. Both teams eg Bash's header - they had six players in the box - and he was by himself on the penalty spot. :)
