What a fantastic Transfer Window

The reason we'd have struggled with the team that got promoted from the championship is... its a championship team, and after all the transfer business of selling our 2 best players.. its a poorer championship team. I'm not sure why people are hellbent on making Hecky the fall guy rather than aiming their frustrations at the Prince.
The prince has put shit loads of cash into the club since he’s been here, if anything he’s been a bit too careless for his level of wealth. Wilder was especially wasteful IMO. The Prince does not sign the players, the manager does and he’s funded it. The managers have wasted the cash, not him.

This is probably why he can’t or won’t spend much now. Relative to his wealth i feel he’s funded us pretty well. He’s given way over 100million for 2 managers to assemble a championship level team.

Perhaps, for his level of wealth, he should gave considered buying Subbuteo rather than a football club.

Odd how everyone thinks Luton are doing better than us, yet they spent £20m and we spent £60+m

Yet it’s the princes fault for been tight?

The club signs every single deal off.
Yes the Owner , the Board & Director of Football ....at the time Jan Van Winckel....sign off every single players.

Yes hes only ear marked a small % of Sheffield United's club money for the club. The rest has financed United World. He has not spent 1 pence of his own money. Read the accounts & wise up.

He has put shit loads of cash in, some of which he was obliged to do when he got 50% of the club for a pound.

It's mainly gone well with him in charge and we've been ran fairly well. However, he conned our previous owner out of the club (who was doing his best to con PA tbf), tried to sell us to two conmen which failed, leading to us failing to pay our debts and be put under a transfer embargo.

This summer window was a disaster for many reasons. I don't think anyone has "wasted cash", clubs spend millions of pounds on players and it's always a gamble. We were right to gamble after our tremendous first season in the PL, most fans demanded it (myself included) but it didn't pay off.

Seems particularly strange to have this narrative about PA which abdicates him of responsibility for our spending and condemns some of our most successful managers as wasteful failures. PA has gambled many times since owning our club, it's paid off the majority of the time. If any of them went badly wrong, we'd be joining our neighbours up shit creek.

Love reading first few posts. Now we lost a few it’s somehow chairman’s fault!

A bit of contradiction in your post. “This window was a disaster”, “no one has wasted cash”. If it’s a disaster then we’ve surely wasted cash and/or not recruited well. The ‘gambles’ we’ve made on players have so far been poor/average. This is wasting cash, and the key metric in analysing the success of a transfer window. With our level of finance you can’t gamble/waste tens of millions of pounds.

The managers and recruitment team have selected the players to sign and then the board/PA release the funds. PA has given access to decent sums of money (relative to club/chairman wealth) for 2 managers to assemble our squad, not the other way around. The chairman doesn’t pick the players to recruit. I don’t think our squad ressembles the value that we have spent and that is the fault of the managers and recruitment team.

We don’t have a rich chairman so we don’t have much/any allowance for wasteful transfers.

I’m really not sure what more PA could do apart from spend more money that he just sadly doesn’t have. That would be dangerous for the financial sustainability of the club. There is also no guarantee that extra spend would result in better players judging by the continued averageness the managers keep signing.

We've recruited averagely. With the budget we had, we couldn't afford players to compete at this level, so we've gambled on some young players and hoped for the best. It's not a waste imo because we needed players for this season and next, half our squad is old or with 1 year left of their contract. You need to buy them at some point. With our level of finance you have to gamble more than anyone. Any signing is a gamble, but you need to pay more for proven quality, the Prince can't afford it.

I think our squad reflects what we've spent perfectly. We've spent fuck all and we can't compete. Our PL spending last time got us a squad that competes well in the Championship, and we got promoted in 2 seasons. Our budget is bottom 2, we'll finish bottom 2.

PA has already spent money that has threatened the financial sustainability of the club. His irresponsible gambles left us unable to pay our debts last season and we were put under embargo. There is no guarantee that larger fees/wages result in better players, but it does the majority of the time. Which clubs are above average in recruitment? Brighton have spent huge money on complete flops, so have Leeds, Norwich, Palace, Brentford, Man U, Chelsea etc. The difference is that their flops are of a different calibre to ours, and they can keep paying until it works out.

If you expect us to compete with the big boys without the financial backing, you can't blame the staff when it doesn't work. It's expected, to compete is a massive over-performance and praiseworthy.

100% this.

In fairness, he did only buy half of a third division club.

And because for once in my life, we haven’t sold every player the second we got a bid, we’re having one of our most successful periods (however shite) in the last 50 years under him.

i agree with some of that. I think this has moved on a bit from the OG point though. Managers have been backed relative to the chairmans wealth. + the management and recruitment team have made too many dud/average signings with the tight budget.

I think it just hilights how awful McCabe was that even this guy can look good next to him. Let's not forget the Prince arrived and sanctioned that "think liverpool" speech. Marked his card as a liar from the start.

At the time Liverpool were buying young with promise after still recovering from the hicks and Gillette era

Everyone was happy with the business until we started to play.

And here endeth the lesson….perhaps one or two should remember to see the player play before making such wild statements as the OP and a few more.
Half of those arriving hadn’t kicked a ball here, others had but been in inferior leagues.

Only one who looked promising before playing for us was Hamer…at least he’d been seen a fair bit. But we’ve managed very quickly to bring him down to our level of game and mentality from the heady days at Coventry FFS!

Best transfer window ever…fuck me. Most of them won’t get a game in the championship. Miles off the standard.

We're skint and going down so I guess we're signing nobody in the JTW...

But if we were, what positions do we need? They were still a few in the summer we needed.

Players like Lowe, Fleck, Osborn and Jebbison ect can also leave to free up funds as they shouldn't be here next season. (Not good enough, injury prone or won't sign new deals)

Luton have spent more than us.

No they haven't.

Name any transfer website, just googled and the 1st site is https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/premier-league/einnahmenausgaben/wettbewerb/GB1

It shows we've spent 64.4 million, not sure whether thats Euros or pounds
and we've brought it from sales £30.9 million.

Our net spend is £33.55
Where as Luton Town have spent £22.75 million with nothing brought in from sales, so Luton's net spend is £22.75 million.

We have higher quality players and a bigger budget than Luton, so how come they are competing much better.
They should have beat West Ham and Wolves at home, they look organised, have plenty of attacks, show effort and try to win.
So why can't we play as a team, like that?

Take away Archer who will be not here next season, he's basically a loan.

And there's no way we've spent 64m.
