I’d suggest it’s because Billy isn’t going to last forever and this season could be our best opportunity to sign the player(s) to replace him. We can attract better quality in the PL than we would if we were still in the championship.

I think if Billy is prepared to accept he won’t start many games but will still play a part he can do a season with us (and might even force his way into the starting line up) but can we rely on him beyond that? No one knows. He might be better dropping down a level to prolong his career. (Or could end up dropping down with us).

There is a difference with Billy he is NOT a prima donner, he knows he'll play a part this season just not the possible leading role. CW has the task of keeping a lot of expensive talent happy and Billy he cannot please them all at same time, Billy has a role to play this season and he'll play it bloody well when called upon. I mean nobody else can say they're got the 21st century all time greatest goals scorer on bench can they.

To use your analogy, Duffy got a knife out the drawer and chopped his own off. Though looking at things at this early stage, doubtful he would have even been on our bench, and with Mousset and Morrison still to appear, it's highly unlikely he would have ever featured.
