Were still in the play-offs (just)

Loved seeing money bags Villa pegged back. I think Villa will be top 2 though come the end of the season. They'll spend again in January no doubt.

I predict:
Reading 1 Sheffield United 4

In fact I'll start a prediction thread.
COYRAWW!

Villa are a different animal from the one we hammered. Tammy should have had a hat trick and some of the play was fast and furious. Def top 2.

Agree DB , they’ve def got the bit between teeth now and look a different team under Dean Smith they’ll take some stopping

Villa had a surge last season and dipped, it's anyones. If we are properley backed in January we could easily do top 2. However that is a big if.

Think a play off position is more realistic. Some of the contenders have far more clout than us with better squads already.

Playoff this year and if we fail then have a proper go at top 2 next year with another 3 windows' recruitment behind us.

We'll be out of the play off race at least 5 games before the end of the season.

We're a mid table team.

Couldn't agree more. Like last season, the fact that were top at one point will be nothing more than a piece of trivia.

I've been saying it for months. We'll do well to match last season's 10th place finish. We simply had a good start that's all.

We still have all the deficiencies we had last season and we're currently doing worse than we did last season.

People need to stop kidding themselves. Teams like Villa, Boro and WBA have an extra gear that we simply don't have. We got bummed at Boro and we'll get bummed again when we go to Villa Park and the Hawthorns.

There'd be a lot less of a furore on here every time we lose if people just lowered their expectations.

Really need back to back wins, if we’re on 40points before next Saturday’s fixtures we put pressure back on the rest.

Although it's hard to compete with clubs that have significantly bigger budgets and som e better quality players, we can still do better by learning how to see out games where we're leading and how to break down stubborn defences.

Me as well!

People are clinging on to hope that the Villa performance was the norm, we just haven't quite made it back there yet, when it was clearly the exception.

I remember people posting 'It'll be reight once we beat Brentford and Leeds and go top again'. Well Leeds beat us, along with fellow promotion chasers Derby, Forest, Boro and maybe even Swansea. Admittedly we had some good results in there too (Blackburn for example). But we won't see the top two again and it won't be too long before we're not a factor in the play-off race, either.

........and how to score from corners

All that, nail on head pal.

Seeing out games to me says lack of leadership on the park, a proper captain would have been telling Norwood (v Rotherham) he's got bags of time, get your foot on the ball and play it out, or telling Henderson (v Leeds) he's not got plenty of time and to put it in the stand. A better and bigger version of Jake Wright perhaps. We need the cool head, talking leaders to see a game out, I'd say Coutts back in would be an idea in this direction too.

As most of us know we need a striker that can conjure a goal out of nothing, I'm thinking another Kabba or Webber, the former someone who loved playing on the shoulder of a centre half (perhaps Defoe for 6 months if he's still got his pace), the other option would be a big striker who could net one (probably a header) from a set play or a punt into the box, another Shipperley or Brian Deane. If Wilder can't secure the services of a striker from the higher echelon, perhaps he should have a few punts from lower down the leagues.

Pre-Wilder we struggled to score from corners mainly because we didn't have too many big lads in the team, then he got Ebanks-Landell, O'Connell, Clarke, Hanson. This season we're back down to one naturally big lad, O'Connell, perhaps an additional big lad centre half (with leadership qualities) and a decent target man (with leadership qualities) would solve a few problems the current team have got!

Luck?
If we didn't have good luck we'd have no luck at all.
