And the fact that that makes no difference to the absolute love we have for him, sums it up.
I will always cherish my Saturday afternoons watching the absolute legend TC.
I’m not sure I would have remained the 100% blade I am without having watched TC and the rest of that brilliant team.

I only ever saw TC play once and that was for Leeds in a Cup game against us at the Lane . They hammered us and TC was absolutely slaughtered by the overwhelming majority of Blades who were at the game everytime he got near the ball .

Was he a great player ? From what little I've seen and heard of him , yes he was . A legend ? Judging by the adulation he still receives , yes , he is . But dismissing the fact that he DID leave us for the utter scum bags up the road smacks of an enormous condescension of posterity . Now , the likes of Jimmy Hagan and Alan Woodward ..........

You never watched him play for the Blades so you understandably will never comprehend why those that did hold him in such high regard. Take it from me it was quite magical. He had an incredible presence and aura when ever he played.

Went and signed for Leeds though didn't he ?

Bizarrely some folk don’t like are best player because he’s a human being...

Have a good one TC.

The best player I've ever seen in a Blades shirt (though my dad always maintained he 'wasn't fit to lace Jimmy Hagan's boots'...) I was there on 26th Feb. 1968 when TC made his debut in a 3-2 home win v. Spurs (Currie scored our second). Even TC's brilliance didn't save us from a last-day (again) relegation. I was also there on 17th October 1973 for the ill-fated game against Poland at the old Wembley which cost us a place in the 1974 World Cup in West Germany.

Many, many great memories from TC (and a few bad ones. I used to have a scrap book - sadly binned long ago - with a picture of TC outside the old John Street stand where somebody had sprayed 'Don't go Tony.' He did. To Leeds). I never actually rated the 'Quality goal by a quality player' v West Ham. I always thought he scuffed it. But, in the same game, I remember TC was defending at the kop end and several West Ham players were closing him down. He dropped a shoulder here, feinted to one side there and, in seconds, he'd 'bought' himself ten yards of space. He never touched the ball once!

Obviously, TC is emotional in the RS interview (or was it 'tired and emotional' as Private Eye say? :D). It could well be that, with Cyrille Regis and, just recently Ryan Mason being forced to retire, TC was probably just reflecting on the transitional nature of a footballer's career and the joy they can bring to many thousands of people. God Bless, TC and what about a statue to England's Gunter Netzer?

Great post and I also saw the matches / incidents you mentioned.

Take your dad's comments with a good pinch of snuff. Both were outstanding in their own different ways and, as the saying goes, comparisons are odious.

As did Deano, as did brown, as did Tonge, as did Warnock.

Who cares?

Dont forget Mick Jones , Gary Hamson and Alex Sabella .

Who cares ? No one . No one complained when any of the players mentioned went to Leeds . Indeed , if my memory serves me right , each and every one of them received a bouquet of flowers and a message of heartfelt gratitude from everyone at the Lane when they went .

N.B Michael Brown went to Leeds following stints at 4 different clubs after playing for us . He still got the flowers though .

Being born in 1977 I missed out on TC but would loved to have been at the Blades v Cardiff night match when we got promotion watching the likes of TC, Woodward, Hockey, Badger etc and enjoying the era,

If I could time travel that would be the one for me, just to enjoy that time and how much simpler things appeared to be.
I was there
Best night at the Lane ever

The first time I saw him play was against Liverpool 1971 we drew 1-1 and TC scored a belter from 30 yards out. Two things about TC, cos he was our star player he was often played when injured and the England game against Poland in 1973 when we battered them but lost, Poland came third in that World Cup, had we qualified TC would have been one of the best players in the World Cup, best player I've ever seen.......

Good old TC, heard it on the radio early ... legend. Too young to really appreciate TC at the Lane, my first game, only 6 year old v Leicester in 75, that kiss, TC and Birchenall, and saw him half-a-dozen times the season after, but still a hero. Glad he thinks so much about the club, as we all do.

That he hasn't got a star outside the town hall steps is a fucking disgrace to this city. The pig lobby on the council need to fuck themselves.

Seems like you're jockeying for the position of being Tyler's heir apparent and I have to say, you're making a pretty good fist of it so far ( pun intended )

Keep up the good work.

Nah, not really. I saw TC's career at the Lane from day one to finish and that call from him brought a tear to my eye. Some things piss me off and why TC has never received the recognition from this city defeats me. He's the best footballer Sheffield has seen in the last 50 years or more so what else can you add?

As for Tyler, he'll be back and I'm looking forward to a bit more verbal sparring with him, one of the few posters on here who can give and take it in equal quantities if you engage him properly. As you know. ;)

Sparring’s one thing.... :D

It's an interesting point you raise . I don't think anyone of a red and white persuasion in our fair city would disagree with you ..... TC is the best player the city has seen during the last 50 years . And I'm sure the majority of our oinking neighbours if pushed would concede that he was too . But our Council and their avowed stance of neutrality on such matters ( when it fucking suits ) would insist that there's a number of players who qualify for the same kind of recognition from both sides of our footballing divide .

I can live with that kind of bollox as it's what I've grown up with .

Where I have an issue however is a little closer to home and it's the over used epithet of the term " legend " that I find difficult to contend with .

I heard TC's call today and it was a stirring and emotional call that no one could fail to be moved by . But is he a " legend " ? I guess the real bone of contention for me is what constitutes the use of the term legend when describing former/current players .

I know I've hijacked this thread and that wasn't my intention but this is something I feel very strongly about . For me , there's only one player in the last 50 Years that deserves the title " legend " and that's Alan Woodward . Not only was he a remarkably talented footballer but he played in English proffessional football for 16 years scoring a post war record of 158 goals in 536 games FOR ONE CLUB ...... Sheffield United .

The next statue to go up at the Lane , or anywhere else in our city , should be Alan Woodward .

One simple soluion to this, get the resident artistic types on here to make two molds, one of AW and one of TC, nick some crab industries fast drying cement, pour into the molds and put em up ourselves in the car park....
Joking aside why not have a statue of Woody and TC in the carpark together ala below

Just a thought.

'Legend' - it's one of those 'in the eyes of the beholder'.

TC in my eyes is a legend. He may not be to others.

That's the way it works and it's a pointless exercise and a waste of energy trying to persuade others to change their opinion.

On another note - this happened before when Woody sadly passed away but I cannot stand fans using the attributes of one player to immaturely criticise another.

Accept them both as GREAT players and those of us of a certain age who were fortunate enough to see them should feel privileged.

I completely understand Luke’s point on this and by no means take anything away from TC’s legacy.

It does raise an interesting point though an emotive one.

The likes of Woodward, Badger, Hodgkinson, Joe Shaw deserve much adulation for their loyalty and dedication to our club. Unbelievable in the modern game these days.

Who can forget Hagan who turned down a move to one of our fierce rivals whilst Currie unfortunately didn’t? The same with Brian Deane.

Both ‘legends’ in my lifetime but if you set the bar at Joe Shaw and Woody, most fall short.

I had the pleasure of 10 mins in the company of TC last season before a match, I was in awe of the bloke, my old man bought me up with the words "TC was God" ringing in my ears most days.

Having spoken to him I can confirm he's a thoroughly lovely guy, loves his adopted home city of Sheffield, loves the Blades fans and was very humbled as we poured his with praise. One of the older guys did say "you still went to Leeds though" his response was along the lines of "yeah, maybe that was a mistake. I should have gone to Man U when they wanted me to replace Bobby Charlton".

Currie showed the Blades plenty of loyalty and loves us all, young and old, I hope others who adored him have the pleasure of 10 mins in his company.

Never saw him play but I've met him a good few times since I started watching the Blades and he's a very good servant to the club as well as a really nice bloke. There's something about the man even in his older years that will never disappear. Most clubs have legends but I'd guess that not a lot remain as part of the club for as long as TC has at the Lane. GLTTL

When HRH takes full control, could do a lot worse than appointing him as Chairman

He would have to try hard. There is absolutely nothing about my favourite player Tony Currie that equips him to be Chairman of a football club. He wouldn’t have a clue. He’d probably be the first to agree, as he would if anyone suggested he become a manager.

I don't think it's even in question about him being a legend Luke...anybody who watched through those years knows how good he was...Woody,Badge,Hodgy were legends in their own right..Just because he went to Leeds doesn't take away from 9 years of great memories.
Didn't Woody put in a transfer request at one point...if he'd had gone he'd have still been a legend to me...TC though..best player I've seen pull on the Red and White, gave us 9 magic years...Legend?..not in question.

My first ever football match was 25th March 1975.

Sheffield United 3 West Ham 2
The famous Match of the Day “quality goal by a quality player” game.

Love Curries arrogance and always playing to the crowd, blowing kisses.
It really did feel like we had one of the best players in Europe. What a player.

But didn’t see enough of him, only started going regularly after he’d left.

What can I say.....A kid that trained alone as perfecting his control knocking a tennis ball against garage doors.

Tony Currie “Simply The Best”
