Now. I’ve just been there. They (the majority) are not Nazi sympathisers either. That’s ancient history in any event. There are more neo-fascists in England’s green and pleasant land than Croatia.

I do hope they knock out the Golden Shower from nasty little England.
heh .. that’s why i made the point.. now is a different kettle of fish.. most of the ethnic Germans were ethnically cleansed in 1945

Not only that, but makes crude and childish sexual-innuendo jibes at the current team. A team which includes two Blades, no less.

That's a distinct lack of respect right there.

There are no Blades players in the team, unless I have missed a recent transfer?

I’m afraid if you accept an invitation to join the Golden Shower you become part of the Golden Shower. I wouldn’t expect to become a FreeMason and get away with it because I’m a Blade...

i would .. i hereby withdraw my application forthwith ;)

Nope, no Blades players. Two Blades fans though. Us fans are also called Blades, as i'm sure you know.
Do you not see the hipocrisy in decrying a lack of respect, whilst referring to said players using crude sexual insults?

Bert has spent the day in Leicester.
England fans everywhere. IMG_20180709_145548.jpg

It’s a light-hearted parody on the Golden Generation, which never was. I’m quite sure they don’t piss on each other in the showers. I respect the team for going above and beyond their very limited ability in getting as far as they have. It’s the deluded nation who have persuaded themselves this team is anything special that attracts and deserves my gentle ridicule.

Having seen every World Cup since 1966 and knowing the teams that won between 1954-1962, I say with the utmost confidence and conviction this would be far and away the worst team ever to win the World Cup. Patriotism doesn’t add quality to a team any more than parochialism. In fact it distorts the objectivity of the appraisal. This team could not have had a more favourable path to the semi-final (not their fault; it happens) and the semi is even money. Then comes the final and a different class; a different story.

I want to see truly great players holding the trophy. We did in 1966. I don’t want to devalue those heroes.

Let’s see Hazard and De Bruyne with the gold medals. Quality on quality and fit, eventually, to join the pantheon of greats.

The Little Englanders would become quite insufferable in the event of a win and a modern crusade would be launched within weeks.

I choose to support the county of my birth, even if they are not the best team in the tournament.
The difference between us is I do not ridicule your point of view, nor make you out to be a racist bigot because of it.

Thank you for a more thoughtful and nuanced explanation of your view than was expressed in previous posts. I disagree with some of it, but this approach leads to a better conversation than before. I've no problem with light hearted parody/humour, but you should know than in the context of the other views expressed it comes across as bitter and resentful rather than comedic.

I partially agree about the fans, and we have our fair share of idiots, but it really is a minority. We just don't hear about all the fans who respectfully and enthusiastically watch the game because they're not newsworthy.
It is counter-productive for the 'good' fans to abandon the national side because a small amount of bigots have claimed it as their own. It sends the message that any nationalist or far-right group need only gain a small foothold in any institution and it will be theirs, due to the best people fleeing it thanks to their presence.
Personally, it doesn't matter to me if an English person supports the national side or not, it's up to them. They don't have to like football either, that's fine as well. I'd just rather not acquiesce to nationalist claims by giving up my support of the England football team as soon as they stick their nose in. I want to push them out, not leave myself.

On the players. That's an interesting position you take. I agree that we want to see the best players perform at a World Cup, but the idea that they deserve the trophy is weird to me. I can see where you're coming from, as I feel that it's a shame that Messi wil likely never hold the trophy, despite being one of the greatest players of all time. Cruyff suffered the same problem.

This isn't how football works though, and you don't win points or games by 'deserving' to do so based on past performances. You win so based on actual performances in that tournament. If England win the trophy, it will be because they beat teams including the likes of Hazard, De Bruyne, Mbappe and Greizmann, not to mention Modric and Falcao. If those players are unable to beat such a 'poor' England side, then maybe they don't deserve to be World Champions after all?

Think about it. Would you like Man City to win the FA cup every single year because they have the best players? If Sheffield United got to the FA Cup final vs Chelsea, do they deserve to win it more, and would you root for the London side, purely because Hazard and Willian play for them? Or .. (crazy idea) does the best team on the day deserve to win the game?

Pinchy is an internationalist .. it’s easier for the commies to overthrow one mega state than a bunch of little ones .. it’s called cultural marxism.. he doesn’t seem to realise that some party apparachik will take over his fancy hope valley house though:D

That’s very well argued and elegantly presented. I’d get your agent to arrange a transfer if I were you.

In fact, there’s very little you say I disagree with, though I’m trying very hard.

Just to clarify, I don’t argue, as it might have appeared, that the putative ‘best team’ should simply be awarded the trophy. Not a bit of it. They must earn greatness, not have it thrust upon them. I’m saying that, as with Messi, I love to see a player’s greatness authenticated on the biggest stage of all. Some just don’t have sufficient quality alongside them of course: Best, Messi, Montgomery.

That’s why I know that no player, for me, will ever topple Pele the nonpareil as the greatest of all time and that Beckenbauer and Platini (as players which is how I shall remember them) will always be in the top three or four. Cruyff came so near he’s an honarary all-time great.

Rumour has it I live in Kilamarsh. I would, but they struggle to grow a decent Malbec.

Would they take my wife, instead?

New manager takes over group of failing, under-achieving over paid tosspots, and brings in a number of new faces and blends an aesthetically pleasing passing team with a back three who keep good possession of the ball. The team goes on to beat many smaller clubs and achieve some success. When coming up against bigger clubs the team continues to do well but ultimately falls short.

Anyone being remotely critical of said team incurs the wrath of an incredibly intelligent man who showers praise on the genius of the manager and one player in particular.

The same incredibly intelligent man refers to team as a golden shower.

Simple really, one of those he supports, the other he dislikes.

That’s because the cowardly scum wouldn’t venture near genuine hard men (also tossers, lest you ask). They wouldn’t blink before they were out cold.
Hi Pinchy
I've got a story....
I'm afraid I personally did not cover myself in glory when England went to The Luzhniki to take on The Russian Bear both on & off the field in 2007. Russia was a bit different, even that short while ago. Lots of England fans, including your correspondent, were essentially coralled in The Hotel Cosmos. The Russian Ultras knew where we were staying. Russian Plod knew where the flashpoints would be. So, they positioned two tanks outside the hotel. I'll be honest, the beer offering was thin. Language & cultural problems meant it was increasingly difficult to get served & come away from the melee with an ale or two.
Luckily, the Russian Ultras turned up & threw flash bombs into hotel reception. Half of the England Lads n Lasses took cover and/or similar aversive action. The other half of the England Lads n Lasses piled towards the Russian Firm who had made it through the door.
I marched straight to the now empty bar front - four beers please. My name has been Mud throughout EngerLand ever since.

Why didn't you just pretend to be Scottish and then.....................................oh!

Did you not see any of Argentina's matches at this World Cup?

Messi was shite.

Only in S13. Shameful shite from a true Neanderthal.

Get a sense of humour you sad cunt ... forgot the book according to Marx doesn't cover humour.

Let's be reyt the only shameful shite emanates from your keyboard ... seem to remember getting the usually crap from you when I posted about Wilder being the new manager a couple of months before it happened ... you were wrong then, as you have been many times before and since.

I've just spent about fifteen minutes reading the last dozen or so pages of this thread.

I conclude that some of you need to let Jesus into your life.

I did until Brazil got knocked out. Prefer Coutinho and Firmino though tbh.
