Welcome to the bleak years.

clearly you dont. Youre no proper fan when youre slagging the guy off before hes ever managed a game of football. Maybe hes shagged a member of your family or summat, but i cant understand why youre so negative about him when he hasnt done anything yet!!!!

Grow up man, why all the insults? It's just an opinion and he's as much entitled to his as you are yours.

Some people will never be happy, I was absolutely gutted at half time and driving to a family meal at 6.3o ish when the news/rumours were being reported I was as happy as I have been for years. Speed has no experience but he has played at the highest level and for some good managers, I was personally hoping it would go to Speed. I have pals who are Huddersfield Town fans they were a little torn when Lee Clarke came in but now he is god! Give the guy a chance and maybe he can bring in some big names like Robson (hopefully on less money and a little more commitment)
UP THE BLADES!!

I hope he does well but as a new manager he will be using us as his learning experience,he is going to make mistakes, experience as a player is valuable but it is not the same as an experienced manager.
I just wish that Mccabe would sign players as quickly as he signs managers.
He went out and got Robson ,he then picked up Blackwell now Speed. Why doesn't Mccabe allow Birch to conduct interviews then choose one of them ,we might be surprised as to who might apply.McCabe doesn't have a very good track record when it comes to choosing the right manager for the right time.

my close source informed me (and i posted it a few weeks ago) that it had been noticed that speed was 'the only one down there with a clue'.. that blackwell had ten games to impress .. obviously big kev decided enough was enough (apparently the loss of 5k season tickets was a shock).. anyway.. well done kev M.. good luck gary.. get rid of the keystone cops in midfield, get the ball on the deck and we'll be fine

maybe a vote in order for worst post of all time?.. heh.. i'm a cynical bastard at the best of times but honestly.. this one takes the digestives

Didnt think it would be long before someone got all outraged and daily mail about it.

Surely he has to have a shot before he's condemned

I hope to God i'm so wrong but I can't help but agree with Ballin.

McC is one tight arse with no idea how to pick a manager to drive us forwards.

cheap as chips MkII ............... but Gary doeshave a bit more charisma than cheap as chips MkI ..but thats not hard !

He could turn out to be a nugget, i'm reserving my judgement until i know the full management team setup.

Lets face it : What decent proven manager wud want to come to BDTBL ?

BB, we are gonna have to get a collection going to fix that Swingometer, I fink we are gonna need it ;)

am more than happy to give gary a chance i expect a different style of play within a few weeks. It will be interesting to see who his no2 is ?

Back to the thread title, The bleak years started the second the final whistle blew at Wembley. Hopefully Speed can stop the slide but he will need some backing from the board. At the very least I expect to see some football played with a passion again.

'I forgot it's a coach who has final say over the manager and his assistant.'

No it's not but it's the mercenary who takes the money when he's past it as a player and does nowt to help/improve the situation as a coach.

At least O'Neil and Coppell had the balls to walk when the situation was wrong.

Odds on Savage having a last pay day off us mugs.

Why don't you kill yourself and have done....:D

Speed was just a coach - not even a number 2. Judging him by our recent failings would be stupidly harsh.

Seriously - young, well connected, full coaching qualifications, played under great managers, played at the highest level, internationally respected, media savvy and likeable. On the negative side, inexperienced - as were Wenger and Ferguson once.

I'd have preferred O'Driscoll. Given that it wasn't going to happen and the other names in the hat, we've made the best choice. I would have given him a short term deal to begin wih, but then again we don't know the details of the terms he's signed.

I'm pleased overall.

UTB

Be nice if he'd had made use of this before now?

Really hope I'm wrong, I'm not being negative just feel bad about this.

I can't believe that an untried coach gets the nod ahead of a sesoned campainer who is avaiable such as Mowbray.

i'd take savage as assistant we need some bollocks in that midfield and a player to run the game.

I know many of us are still a bit hetup after Saturday, but surely everyone has to offer the new Manager our support, irrespective of either the timing or the politicising of the appointment?

With a job description including no money for transfers unless it's some surplus from sales, reducing the wage bill AND getting a top 6 finish, the good managers out there can give us a wideberth and wait for something else which won't damage their cv's. Clean slate for me and good luck Gary.

Coaches that stay in a job tend to do what the manager asks of them rather than what they think is needed. Like most jobs really, do as the boss says!

Bloody hell, do we still need to do that? If so I've got a suggestion involving our Ched and a piece of 2" by 4".

If that's supposed to be "him" with the hammer, the other bloke is not believed to be worried in any w,s or f......:D

You are a complete arse. Seriously, i can't be bothered saying anything else, youre a tit. I dont hope he proves you wrong, i just hope you dont bother going to Bramall lane any more, we could do without dicks like you.

Come Blader everyone is entitled to an opinion but show some class, I quote Ballin

'Good luck to Kevin Blackwell. He did his best. There are always two sides to every story. But I go on what I see and hear. The king is dead, long live the new king.'

I suppose everyone is entitled to their opinion, even when they're crap.....:D

You put far too much faith in the ability of a coach to influence first team affairs

You put far too much faith in human nature to suggest a player should say "I think my best days are behind me so you're offering me too much cash"

Is it grumpy, or gullible blade?....:)

So what do you think encouraged McCabe to give Speed the job, if by his coaching he wasn`t influencing 1st Team affairs, just wondering like ?

I would take the money offered to Speed as well if I was him but what puzzles me is this love-in with Speed.

Didn't people notice how he was a yard short as a player.

What influence has he had whilst coaching?

Why over look seasoned managers like Mowbray?

As I've said elsewhere good luck to Speed and even if it starts off poorly we all need to keep stum about it. We've had our say whilst he was been choosen but now it's onwards and upwards [hopefully]. Last thing I want to do is say is 'I told you all'

Gentlemen.

Just because someone has said something you don't agree with, it doesn't give you carte blanche to go calling them names.

Can we stick to respectful disagreement instead of resorting to the lowest common denominator responses best suited to other sites.

Consider this a warning. Any more anywhere else from anyone and the infraction stick will come out.

Much obliged.

It was virtually a certainty that Speed would get the job. All the fuss about which managers are either out of work or would come to us was just idle chit-chat. Speed was in place, and he's probably the best placed to get the best out of the squad he will inherit rather than getting a new face - any new face. Speed has been here long enough to know the players we've had for a while, and deserves to be given a chance now that the job is his. If he makes a complete balls of it then by all means slaughter him then, but at least give him the opportunity to prove he can do it.

Cus the advert would cost him money.

Im with ballin in some respects, of course i will back Speed and I really really hope he is the right man to push the club forward, however, as usual my glass is half empty. And a few things worry me.

Why wasn't this done end of last season? Why wait for Blackwell to begin to try and build a team give him 2(3) games then sack him just to replace him with Speed? I was hoping that the way this had all been done would mean a big change, which is personally what I believe the club needs.

People are saying that Blackwell would have gone even if we had won on Saturday so why just replace him with Speed?

If Blackwell was going anyway why not let Speed have the chance to sign players and build a team that he wanted. He now has two weeks and very little money to do anything, he has to try and pull together a team that Blackwell has built, I feel sorry for him to be honest.

As usual we are left thinking about what is going on behind the scenes, and I am hoping we get some sort of explanation tomorrow afternoon (but I doubt it).

I had alot of respect for McCabe, he has helped us along the way, he promised us bigger and better things, so why are we going backwards? Why go for the cheap option and take another gamble? Why not get someone who is proven at this level? Or just of given Speed the job end of last season to at least let him have the chance of having a proper go at it.

FFS Ballin we do need to give Speedo a chance.Yes he probably is the cheap option, this has been the case at the Lane for as long as i can remember. But after Saturday i would rather have had that turd from s6 than Hoofy.I think its safe to say that the thing most Blades want at the moment is a change of style in which we play the game.Whether Speed can get the likes of Monty and Quinn to pass a ball properly is questionable. His appointment might not get people re-newing in vast numbers, but i think it should stop a lot more jumping ship.UTB.
