Speed was just a coach - not even a number 2. Judging him by our recent failings would be stupidly harsh.

Seriously - young, well connected, full coaching qualifications, played under great managers, played at the highest level, internationally respected, media savvy and likeable. On the negative side, inexperienced - as were Wenger and Ferguson once.

I'd have preferred O'Driscoll. Given that it wasn't going to happen and the other names in the hat, we've made the best choice. I would have given him a short term deal to begin wih, but then again we don't know the details of the terms he's signed.

I'm pleased overall.

2) Do you remember the vast difference in footballing style when Kendall's inexperienced player coach, Nigel Spackman, stepped up to take the Manager's job

He may well be a relatively cheap option, but i'd rather give him a chance rather than the same old tired suggestions of Brown, Jewell, Coleman etc...

Good luck to Speedo, but I do have reservations.

I think he's the right man, but maybe at the wrong time.

He's entering a cauldron of fire and he needs to hit the ground running.

I hope the board have managed to find a few bob to give him the oppotunity to bring one or two in, that will help him to change our style of play.

I can say that his coaching was highly thought of at the academy when he went down, and I believe one of our first teamers named him in the program as the best coach he's ever worked with.

Starts with a clean slate as far as I can see. No previous, so how has he had chance to do anything wrong?

He's worked under some decent managers who he might have picked stuff up from (Kendall, Robson Bobby, Dalglish, Gullit???) and he's worked for some whom I hope he ignores (Wilko, Royle, Robson Bry, Hoofy).

Just as I would have given McCall a go when we appointed Robbo, I see this as a natural appointment and not something to worry about.
