Weir brings in Assistant Manager - Performance

A quick look at the academic papers he's been an author on suggests his work hasn't had many citations.

I read from this that the management team is going to look a bit unconventional compared to the normal set-up!

Not one but two assistant posts is what I deduce from this, otherwise why add the 'performance' bit to the title, just call Owen Assistant Manager? So I think there will be no 1st team coach, with Morgan taking the 'development squad' and Unsworth back with the academy. As for the other position, who knows, Gemmill was mentioned as have a few other names.

Of course I could be completely wrong!

One possibility might be Billy Brown, who was assistant to Jim Jefferies on a number of occasions. Weir speaks fondly of both of them throughout his autobiography, with Brown much more hands-on with training. He's just come away from a stint as East Fife boss, is currently without a job from what I can see - could fit the bill if Weir wants some experience alongside him.

I agree with what you're saying if he wants experience but personally I'd like to see an attack minded coach come in, saying that he was a defender, Weir was a defender and so was Morgan. Whilst we are not to bad statistically defensively surely we need to improve on our ability to attack.
 
This can only be a good thing. I think a lot of people were a bit worried about our fitness levels last season, so having someone concentrating on that (plus 'injury avoidance techniques' - also one of his specialties, and one of our issues in the last few years) is great news.

As an aside did anyone hear Higginbotham on TalkSport last night? He was saying how tough the pre-season was at Stoke and fitness levels was obviously something they concentrated on.

No, you are completely right. DW made it clear on the radio last night. He wants a 'fitness' man and a 'football' man. Although he didn't say it in terms, I got the distinct impression that Morgan and Unsworth will not have roles with the first team. My guess is both will be gone by Christmas.
 
If he is looking for experience I still have a feeling it will be Ricky Sbragia. But I think he will go for someone of his generation the more I think about it!

I've seen quite a few people put Sbragia's name forward. Other than the fact he happens to have coaching experience and to also be Scottish, is there a reason his name is being mentioned? Someone like Willie Donachie also fits those criteria, and may possibly want to jump from Newcastle given all the off-the-field chaos there at the minute.

Scotland Gemmill has been mentioned, which would fit your description.

Archie Gemmill - great midfielder and patriot as well it seems!

I think the link with Sbragia comes from people seeing him in Sheffield the weekend Weir got the job
 
Im just hoping that this is a stroke of genius rather than a stab in the dark.
Personally,i think its a bit tongue in cheek,but we`ll see.
