Wednesday points deduction: Can you imagine a scenario where…

Imagine if you’re Luton, Plymouth or Cardiff.

You’re probably already irked to find that a club has spent beyond their means to finish 3 wins clear of the relegation spaces.

Imagine then said club is relegated on merit; points deductions mean little, they would still go down. They then wipe out those debts and start afresh. Immediately upon relegation the transfer bans are renewed and new owners spend the cash like Birmingham.

So for once potentially contributing unfairly to your relegation above theirs, unless the clubs crossed each other, they then get a chance to deny you promotion too by allowing a free for all investment in players.

It would simply lack any credibility.

Let’s not forget this is the same card played with the Coop Bank I.e. pleading an existential threat to get obligations and punishments waved. It’s simply morally reprehensible to allow this to occur.

Looks to me like they’ve got away with one and it’s just a big reset. This is why they’re so happy, thinking the new owners will spend a bucketful and come straight back up.

Hope the 60% rule is applied next season and SAG actually make them get that ground safe

Why make ground safe when they're moving to a brand new 70000 capacity stadium?

It’s Radio Sheffield that have said that during Football Heaven tonight. As far as I can tell the EFL have not said that at all. Where Radio Sheffield have got it from I’ve no idea - I’m assuming it’s the weds fan administrator which isn’t really an unbiased source now is it. Not really sure it’s wise for the administrators to allow the person dealing with creditors etc to be a Wednesday fan. Surely a conflict of interest as the administrator has two roles - one to ensure the creditors are paid as much of their debt as possible and two that they do as much as possible to salvage the business in this case Piggy FC. Rob Staton kept stressing that it’s a good thing that Weds were receiving all their punishments this season and it’s positive for the club and potential new owners. He said why should Weds be punished any further abc especially next season. I disagree. The reason is simple. By allowing a club - in this case Sheffield Wednesday - to start afresh next season after essentially wiping their debts free and removing punishments like the transfer embargos that are for rule breaking that’s already occurred they are effectively giving Weds a massive advantage over the other 23 clubs that will be in League One next season. Whether we like Weds or not if the transfer embargo’s are removed players that would be attracted to play for League Ons clubs next season would choose Weds over say Rotherham because of club size. The EFL is there to represent all 72 clubs not just Sheffield Weds and they will be leaving themselves open to legal challenges and potential precedent setting that rules can be broken and punishments not followed through with

theyve got away with it and they know it porktalk is ecstatic that the extra 6 point deduction has happened now and not next season which it really should have been utb ftp ⚔️⚔️⚔️

… we come out to to play them at the Lane in February - knowing that if we beat them we send them down. They’ll be 13 games left after that point and would need to be 39 points adrift (currently 27 points adrift).

I mean come on..it is possible?☺️

I’ll get my coat

It appears then that the EFL have 'swapped' the last two windows of the previous sanction with a 6 point deduction.

As their chances of avoiding relegation were already extremely low, the EFL have shit themselves and hoped nobody would notice.

No doubt other clubs, especially those who broke the same rules and didn't receive such favours, will respond.
Well i think we should just keep our heads down on this one, as it's exactly the same thing we negotiated with the efl when getting our -2 deduction

No matter which way you look at it, its pretty sad to see English soccer with these issues when some EPL teams are banks and the rest barely have a positive bank balance.

Pro teams here in the US are profit centers so whats the difference?

See your point but don’t agree.

All clubs know the rules. Wednesday gambled spending millions, expecting they could escape being punished by being in the Premier league.

The real issue is that instead of having 1 organisation running football, we have 3 organisations, the FA, Premier league and EFL and guess what? The reward in the PL are so high that it’s tempting to cheat.

All 3 organisations are selfish trying to acquire more power and have self interest protecting their members.

People might say football is dying etc but the evidence shows the opposite. The Premier has been an incredible success. Easily the most watched league in world football bringing in more TV money than the Spanish leagues and French leagues combined. Arsenal currently have a season ticket waiting list of over 100K and it cost £50 to be added to it. In England there was plenty of clubs who could sell out a 80K stadium every match. Incredible really.

We negotiated the punishment for the start of a new season so it was an effective/ real punishment.

Wednesday are already down so whether you deduct a further 0 points, 6 points or 50 points, it’s having no effect because they are already relegated.

According to football heaven pigs are
cleared of anymore issues with the
Powers that be be it EFL or others!.
That doasnt seem to be the case with some issues still to be discharged with whoever!.
Wonder what them issues are and the punishment they may receive.
I think a fair number of clubs will be keeping a close eye on events which could lead to pigs getting off lightly.

well, its a smart move for them taking all the points in one season, hopefully the FA have a clause to prevent any appeal to reduce the punishment.

Normally when a points deduction is applied the club then appeal to reduce the deduction, this has not happened as yet, we know theyre very sneaky and pla dirty when it comes to paying for things or paying staff, so i expect an appeal on the total points if the FA havent covered thier bases...

Depends how they come out of admin, if they don’t raise enough to pay the creditors off at 25p in the pound then they could get up to -15 next season..
That won't happen though as tje buyers will make sure they pay 25p in the pound to avoid that deduction otherwise they are guaranteed at least 2 seasons in league one.

They won't have new owner by then, admins have already extended the deadline for preferred bidders, nobody wants them, at least not at the price their asking
Nobody's asking anything for them. The administrators job is to get the highest amount of money for the creditors that they can...whether that's 10m or 30m...

The buyers may very well look at the sort of outlay needed to avoid the 15 point deduction and decide its too pricey.

At which point the only offer may be one that is below the 25p in the pound. Sure it make sense to avoid the 15 points if you can - but are those 15 points worth paying an extra 10m? 15m? 20m?

If they weren't under a transfer embargo you could see a prospective buyer thinking I'll keep the extra 15m and instead use it on the team to try and overcome that 15 point deduction.

They aren't under an embargo next season. Unless the Wednesday supporting lead administrator is bluffing its guaranteed the buyer will pay 25p in tje pound and my guess is that's where the bidding starts

Wonder what the EFL will do if the "Independent" panel wants more points deductions for the other breaches which they have yet to hear .EFL could be in a pickle

Yeah I was about to share this:

"Likely to be resolved" certainly sounds like it'll be reduced/removed

You could think that.

You could also understand it they’ll hear an appeal when the eventual custodians are named.

It may mean there is some leniency with new folk but it could also be a precursor to being upheld.

Radio Sheffield seem to have jumped the gun on this one with their clean slate and Jan 2026 mantra.

No mate, it's much better to close sections of our KOP instead for "safety".
