A welcome fresh start

WebberDanny Webber is determined to step up his performance for the Blades this term after a frustrating time with injury last season.

The pacey forward produced a lively display against Worksop on Monday night, scoring United's first goal on 22 minutes from the penalty spot.

Danny said: "I enjoyed Monday night a lot. I've missed playing football, because I've not really played much for the last six months. The sharpness is coming back and my game is coming together nicely.

"Having said that, the biggest thing missing when you're injured is fitness because, if you play when you're not fully fit, you can't do things that you tend to do naturally in a relaxed way so, in effect, you're playing with pressure."

Webber, who made 13 starts, nine substitute appearances and scored three Premiership goals last season, saw a series of niggling injuries knock him off his stride in the 2006-07 campaign.

He continued: "Last season was a non-event for me, and it's easy to find yourself written off by some people, but I have confidence in myself and I aim to come to the fore again this term."

The former Manchester United trainee says he wants to be at the front of the pecking order in United's batch of strikers.

Danny added: "Everybody seems to have come back for pre-season in good shape - the bar has been raised and you know that, subconsciously, you're in competition with the others for a place.

"That competition is inevitable, so all you can do is look after yourself on and off the pitch, do the right things and then it's up to the manager."

add stead to that list - could cause lots of havoc to every championship defence.

This is exactly the kind of thing that i want to hear. I have been as guilty as anyone when it came to writing Danny off after his indifferent season last year but we all know what he can do at this level and who knows how things would have turned out if he had stayed fit and in the side last year.

Whilst we have an abundance of quality strikers at our disposal, i wouldn't be surprised if it is Danny that finishes the next campaign with the best goals per game ratio of the lot.

I hope he does step up.

He has the ability to do well again in the championship.
