We need to talk about Sydie Peck

I think ultimately Peck could end up playing at the base of midfield. Just for now, he doesn't have the tactical experience, which without some outstanding physical quality is needed for the role. But its going to have to be steep learning curve if he is to become that player this season and in this set up.

I haven’t read all this thread so it might’ve been said before but my god, Peck is a frustrating player.

Positionally, movement, passing, tackling…it’s just safe. It’s the epitome of what people talk about recently about football has been diluted and boring. Peck epitomises that narrative. He rarely breaks the lines with his movement or his passes and generates little attacking threat starving our players further up the field.

The sooner Arblaster comes back the better because Peck was lucky last season to be playing alongside Souza who looked after him.

He actively damages this team, not intentionally he's just the wrong player.
You could potentially say the same for Hamer. I’m not sure why we try and play width when each and every time it is: feint to go outside, half beat man, stop, turn inside, play backwards. It is every time so beginning to look coached.

I hate to say this about a young player, as there’s a chance given what’s said about his ego that he probably looks at this forum, but he is absolutely awful. He lacks any aggression, can’t head the ball, can’t see a pass and definitely can’t consistently bring a goal to the team. I saw near the end today he was showing for the hall loads and looked eager to play well, but he is just not at this level at this stage of his career, by a long long long way.

He needs to be benched. Tom Davies looked great tonight but he’ll be injured soon. If it was up to me I’d put Hamer in there and beg him to be disciplined. At the side of him I’d try Matos. We need some aggression in there, it’s shocking at the moment.

I want peck to do well, but he’s nowhere near it and needs to stop starting games before it becomes really toxic and he can’t get out from under jt.

Shouldn’t be anywhere near the team but says a lot about our recruitment since last January. He’s first handful of games for us I thought he looked a really promising player. But he’s carried most matches and slows down play by passing sideways and backwards. He has no goal scoring threat and I’ve never seen a player pass/shoot with such little power, as though he scuffs it’s each time.

There's no doubt that he has shown some ability and he has potential.

However he never scores, very rarely creates chances and assists and gets overran in midfield as his positioning is poor due to lack of experience. He's certainly not a tough-tackling holding midfielder either.

I don't see any particular issues with his attitude on the pitch but Wilder did say last year that 'He thinks he should be playing for Real Madrid and England'. Ok that's tongue in cheek but perhaps he thinks he's already made it?

He needs a strong Souza-type player next to him and better players around him, and its not his fault that several of them have been sold/gone back.

However being ruthless in the cold light of day in my opinion he's presently not adding/contributing enough to merit selection for the first team though would be interested in what others think.
Can we talk about (supposed superstar) Gus Hamer….

Yep, I know it’s a well worn phrase. But the definition of stupidity is to do the same thing over and over and over again…and expect a different outcome.

been awful all season and one of the reasons opposition midfields run all over us same again tonight how he gets in before matsos is baffling

We have a lot of average to poor Championship performers this season. Peck is fitting right in that category.

Towards the end of the game today he played 2 or 3 good, incisive forward passes to feet. Before that he just played backwards and sideways a lot. Oli Norwood he isn’t, but he’s not awful either.

Thing is from what we can see can from social media and quotes, he’s obsessed with getting a goal. He’s literally produced 2 assists to date.. we need team player whose Thinking the team needs a goal .. not your ego.. i honestly think it’s affecting his game

How doesn’t Soumare start over him. He’s looked solid every time he’s played, he also gives a bit of aggression

Chong and Soumare for me. Soumare in the Souza role with Chong floating. That’s untested but I’d like us to try it

He’s a very similar player to Ahmedhodzic in that his game seems to change depending on who he’s lined up next too. Anel looked like a world beater next to Souttar but a complete bomb scare next to Robinson. Peck looked really good with Souza or Davies alongside him but his game drops off when a poorer player is next to him.

Too much criticism of a good player who has been asked to do too much at this stage of his career. 12 months ago he was on the bench and was likely to be used sparingly, not his fault circumstances changed. Plus playing in a side with too many square pegs and underperforming ones at that.
Couldn't agree more. Plus, if he's not on the pitch in the final 20mins last night, who is actually showing for the ball as no one else seemed that bothered ....
